Teacup Yorkie Me and my baby live in an area that just rebuilt a bridge that people can walk over to the other side an back . i know i really wasnt suppose to be walking her till she got all her shots(one more to go) but i was carrying her the whole time. Well everytime we would pass curious dog owners they would ask "Oh is she is tea cup?"or "Oh I had one of those dogs, got her from the pet shop, she was 2lbs but had so many problems" well so instead of enjoying the serinity of the walk I was enjoying the education I was giving people on the fact that their is no such thing as a tea cup Yorkie and about buying their pups from byb/mills etc. I didnt mind teaching plus my baby was socializing. Well I'm just really posting to say thank you YORKIETALK cause the education is limitless and you can get so much from here. I felt so knowledgable:D |
I go through the same thing all of the time!!! We bring Zoe everywhere with us and everyone always asks "Oh, is she a teacup Yorkie" or "Oh, is she a miniature Yorkie". ARGH! I then explain how there is no such thing as either a teacup or miniature - that some Yorkies are just smaller than others. I swear they look at ME like I don't know what I'm talking about!! Of course it would help if people didn't advertise that they were selling "teacup" Yorkies! |
I hear Ya I am a breeder and people ask me if I breed "teacups" and I explain to them that thereis no such thing, and they will argue with me. "oh yes there is my sister has one and they told her it was a teacup, blah blah blah" How can you argue with that logic. |
We go through the same thing all the time!!!! I think it's because so many breeders advertise "teacup" and tiny teacup yorkie puppies for sale" because they can get more money that way! SAD!!!!!:( |
I get the same comments about Pebbles. I just tell them that she is just little that's all. |
I too get these comments a lot. I hate it most when the people act very educated and say, "Oh look, it is one of those teacups" Needless to say, I have to bite my tongue so I don't look rude. Most of the time I just tell people that yorkies come in all sizes and Ranger is just a smaller one. |
Nice Post!! I've been away for a long time...But i enjoyed your post. You do learn allot from this site...I missed it. Life can be hectic and a good friend told me to write down 5 things that I loved....Then she asked me if I do these things.....NO!!!! Simple but eye opening. Well YT was on my list ,and I am back people!!!:animal-pa |
We were out walking Anakin and Bella the other day and everyone was asking about them. One women asked if they were teacups and I explained t her that there is only one type of yorkie and that is what they are. She looked at me like I was clueless. I think I am going to start carrying a flyer that explains it. Some people believe it more if it is printed. :p |
Having something to hand out to people is a very good idea. Being on YorkieTalk has educated us and now we can spread the word to others. Each situation is different. To some, you can quietly explain about teacups and some will just never get it. I find that if you can educate just one loudmouth, it saves a lot of time. They will go off and do the work for you, telling everyone they know! A handout would save time when you are in a hurry and not able to stop and talk. |

I have given up explaining to people. I get asked if Zeus is teacup and he now weighs 8 lbs! He still looks small but come on people! |
I get asked if Sydney is a teacup Yorkie often. When I said that she isn't and that there is no such thing, one woman said her friend had a teacup Yorkie. When I explained to her that teacups are sometimes the runt of a litter and can have health problems (not all do, but some) she said, "Oh, maybe that's why her Yorkie died soon after she turned three." That was sad. She said her friend was looking to buy another teacup. I told the woman that she may want to educate her friend. |

just a thought if there is only one kind of human how come the ones that are really small are called midgets or dwarfs are they different kinds of humans or are we simply using these terms to say that they are slightly different because their size is unusually small....just a thought maybe we shouldnt chastise these people for using the word teacup to say thats one small yorkie:)......sorry just a thought.....:D try to take it easy on me:cool: |
I agree with you. I learn soooooo much from Yorkietalk. I'm so thankful I found this site! :) Its funny because the first time I got her right away a stranger asked me. "Is she a teacup?" . . . Now everytime I go out people still ask me. I should really start refering them to Yorkietalk. lol |
Hi, Just thought I drop in for awhile. As far as the size of Yorkie's.. they come in all sizes. Their yorkies :ghug::ghug: When I walk the girls, they think Punken is Breese Mom. I'm ask all the time if Breese is a toy. No, I just tell them she's a yorkie and they come in all sizes and colors. I'll try and post some pictures of them when I can. Probably next week sometime. Will be away this week-end for my Mother's 99th Birthday. Take care of all your little one because they take care of us. Bye for now, Punken Pie...:jacko: Breese BeBe...:littleang |

Luckily I do not get the "Teacup" with my two tubbies:D. I try to explain what the phrase means, the possible health issues and about PuppyMills, BYB's and petstores. True, not all smaller pups will have problems. However, when one sees ads like this "Mirco Teacup Baby Yorkshire Terriers, Direct from Breeder" makes you wonder how small the dog actually is ??? We as yorkie owners can only try to educate and not get into "heated" discussions. |
IMO there's no need to educate the stupid people, at least I just get worked up if they approach me with uneducated, dumb comments. So I just play along ,and say YEA! It's a teacup and it was $2000, then they roll their eyes and walk on by in disbelief :) |
I get asked this all the time!!! Miss Lula-Mae Famous is a little over 2 pounds now at 5 months. Not only do I get asked if she is "one of those teacup types" but people will say "she is just a puppy right? she is going to get bigger?" and shoot me a dirty look *sigh* I just want to go to the bank and get a cup of coffee, I wasnt really looking forward to a Q&A session on my dog. I dont get angry about people being uneducated about yorkies, I cant really blame them. I didnt know much about them until I got one myself. "teacup" is almost like a size comparison for a dog that has a vast range in sizes. Like said in a previous post its like "little people" or "midget" for people. Sometimes I almost feel as though they are trying to make small talk so they dont seem so creepy when they are rubbing their hands all over my dog. :P I just say she is my little runt. ;) What bothers me is the people that for some reason dont aprove of my small dog. Like she isnt a "real" dog becuase she is small. No matter what size she is, she is my best friend. maybe she cant catch a frisbee but I love her just the same. |
Hello, Thank you all the Birthday Greeting for my Mom. We've been busy today getting ready for our trip. The girls had their full brushing today and baths tomorrow. My Mom is going to be really surprised to see them. I won't be home for a couple of days but will be back to visit when I return home. All of you take care and hope you have a wonderful week-end. Kathleen... Mom to: Punken Pie:aimeeyork and Breese BeBe:littleang |
I agree...Until I actually sat down and started to educate myself with this type of dog did I learn that TEACUP does not exist. I have a 4mth old yorkie and weighs only 2.8lbs. She is very tiny but I don't ever say I have a teacup just a special baby:) The breeder we bought her from also told me the same thing..She's smaller than some of the others but NEVER called her a teacup. I haven't taken to places where there are alot of people yet. I'm tryin to slowly get her used to the car. |
