Toby has now started to lift his leg to pee. I am trying to grow his coat out, but he keeps peeing on it! It ends up with hard matted parts on his "side skirt" and belly. Anything I can do to avoid the matts?

maybe a sanitary clip wud help , around his privates , or a jumper as its getting cold in ireland now lol

i would be interested to see what the show people do

Show dogs have their coats wrapped. Toby is too much of a dog for that. I personally dont think its fair.

As for the jumper, when I would've put clothes on Millie, she matted even more.

Never heard of a sanitary clip.

thats right but surely not all the time, {wrapping}. have u tried a good conditioner and detangler, it a matter off combing every day maybe a couple off times a day . ps i think we are the only ones on lol, usa wud be still in bed

I thought they were wrapped most of the time, because dirt etc can cause the hair to break.

I use Ice on Ice conditioner, and brush every day.

He is between the puppy and adult coat stage, which is why I think it is so bad.

I didnt even think about this cause I got so excited when Binky started lifting his leg to pee. How old are they when their coats begin to grow out?

Yeah he has the belly shaved around his privates etc, its the hair down his side thats is matting the most because he lift his leg up, and because of the angle the pee drips, it is falling on his "skirt".

thats why then lol,, hard work when they are like that, mine were clipped ,pet style when they got their adult coat i wud let them grow .but i prefere the pet style

cud take a year , every pup is different, maybe longer, my 1 yrs old had his adult coat just before his 1. he has very fine silky coat

hi welcome to yt, if u go to grooming talk on the site u will get loads off info on everything u need to know, usually a year sometimes longer,

I read your post, this morning, and thought "Durn, it must be cold there, if she can't even take his coat off to pee"...lol...And then when I read further down, the sanitary clip was mentioned, and I was trying to figure out how that would hold the hair away from their boy parts lol...I had just gotten up, so I'm putting down to not being awake, but it all made me laugh after it was all explained...And sorry, I don't have any answers, except maybe use a baby-wipe, after he goes, then you'll have to brush, when you get back inside...Lots of work all over a wiz, right?

Easy, just make a ponytail on his side so the hair doesn't hang down where the pee hits..

The sanitary cut is for the backend..
