is that true that a tiny only live a short lifespan? hi, i found a research said tat, a tiny dog (4lbs n below) live a very short lifespan ( 0-7years) is that true? i have a 3lbs yorkie n feel so sad to know about this!! and it also said that a tiny cannot be spayed because they cannot handle the anesthetic well..is that true as well? if they only live a max 7 years, then whats the point on spaying them? (normally all the cancers and pyometra will only occur when they reach 8-10 years) |
I had 2 dogs that had pyometra @ the age of 6 months. One was a Great Dane and the other a German Shepherd. I know that you have to be very careful with anesthesia on little ones usually under 2 pounds. If your dog is in good health it should be fine to put under. Check with you're vet. As far as not having as long a lifespan as a larger Yorkie I would check with your vet. And the reason to spay is if your 3 pounder were to get pregnant you could possibly lose her and the puppies! That would be tragic...:( |
I don't know for sure how old they can get, but I do know that the small ones need very careful handling. I would check before doing anything with a good vet that specialize in small breeds. |
 |
I don't know but . . . I have never heard anything like that. Lola is 2.15 lbs and was spayed two weeks ago. She vomited the night she was spayed because of the anesthesia however I don't think it was because of her weight. She recovered fine and didn't have any other problems. :) |
Not true unless a medical problem stunted their growth and the underlying problem hasn't been fixed OR they have an accident and they are hard to avoid when they are that small. Usually 3 pound dogs can do very well getting spayed as long as the right protocol is followed. |
Take Heart! You are hearing generalities and there can be exceptions to every rule. Just continue to take good and loving care of your baby:animal-pa:hug: Jackie and my :littleangSophie :aimeeyork |

My Hope who was only 3.5bl lived to be 12 years old bar 2 weeks. She survived, surgery to pin her leg folled by amputation. Numerous tooth scalings, spaying due to pyometra amongst many. Her sizing was natural though, not deliberatly bred for as both her parents were in the 6lb range. She was a fiesty oppinionated little madam who could twist everone around her paw, even my sister who swore she didn't like little dogs. |
Not neccessarily. It's often the case though because generally, when a breeder is focusing on size and purposely trying to produce small dogs, they tend to let the overall health of the animal take a backseat. Therefor, many extremely small dogs are very ill bred and riddled with health issues. However, tiny little ones can simply be runts and smaller, but with no health issues at all. In either case, they smaller the dog, the more prone they are to injury, so you do have to be extremely careful. |
Can you post the website? Generally, small bred dogs live longer than large breed dogs so I would be interested in seeing this site. |
Cin- I think by smaller dogs she meant the extremely tiny Yorkies, not small breeds in general. But I could have misunderstood her... |
My mom's 2 pound 7 ounce yorkie is 11 years old and going strong. Michele :-) |

Since you know I have little Bella (all of 3#'s) and Moose (all of 4#) I am very interested in this research. It could be that tinies have more accidents but I have never seen they only live 7 years. So just interested..:) |
OK, I gotcha. I'll just shut up now. :p |

Hi, I really don't think you have to worry at all about tiny Yorkie not living as long (unless like the OP said-that they were purposely bred to be tiny and could have health defects). I have a 3 lb girl named Belle who will be 14 in November and she is doing well, she has lost a few teeth, has some mild cataracts, and is a little hard of hearing but she is very healthy and happy. Belle was the largest girl in a litter of 6 puppies from 2 5-6 lb parents and I didn't intend on getting a Yorkie this small but that is how she grew up. In fact she lived longer than my Boxer who died last June at 10 years old. Teresa |

u can go google n search for ' tea cup lifespan' when they meant tea cup, they meant anything who weight 4lbs n below.. even our baby is not tend to breed as a 'tiny' but they come out tiny so im concern about that ;) mayb they say it like that to not encourage people out there to get a tiny? :D |

Thank you for posting this. It has been a concern for me too since Missy has only topped out at 3 lbs 12 ozs. I do agree that the tinies don't tolerate anaesthetic as well, although I do think it has alot to do with whom is administering the anaesthetic. Missy was put under TWICE for leg surgeries (yes, they are fragile, she broke her leg from jumping 4" off the ground) and both times she dealt with it fine, BUT when my regular vet went to do her spay operation, they almost lost her. I think that when anaesthetic is to be used on these tiny ones, they really need to see a specialist (which is whom did her leg surgeries). |

she cried so loud n couldn't walk for a while.. we were so lucky that she dint really hurt her legs  i'm afraid on losing my girl on the spaying surgery that make my decision on and off on spaying her or not:mad: i still couldn't make the decision till now!!! |
My precious little Kayla who at her heaviest was 3 lbs, lived to be 3 months short of 14 years old. She wasn't bred to be tiny, she was just the "runt" of the litter. She was spayed and did very well. She was a very healthy little girl. |

This is very interesting. My daughter that is 16 has a yorkie that is under 3 pounds. she is a sweetheart. If something would happen to her my daughter would go to peices. I would suggest that people looking at purchasing a tiny yorkie to think about it. They are really like babies. You have to watch them all the time. Now my daughter is in school during the day Jessica cries all day for her. I thought about buying her a carry pouch that I can carry her around but still get things done during the day. |
