| Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself and my puppy, Bentley. This is the first time I have ever owned a Yorkshire Terrier - it has been quite interesting thus far. He is 4 months old and has quite a personality! My fiance got him for my birthday because I had always wanted one and I will have to say I LOVE HIM! (both of them). Training has been interesting. I have learned a few tricks and would love any advice (and plan to read more forums after I post). We learned that putting a bell on the door handle and shaking it, then saying "potty" has trained him to pee outside - he will only go poo if after he eats, we wait 20 minutes then let him outside, we continue to say potty. He doesn't piddle on the floor at all, and if I am out of the room (he is baby gated into our tv room area) and I don't let him out he will only pee on the puppy pad. We are learning, but it has been a challenge. He will sit, if I have a treat and ask him too and doesn't stray away from either of us. We broke down the other day and started letting him on our couch in the TV room. I feel like I gave in, but I like for him to cuddle with me, even though he has warm fleece beds, with blankets, all over. I am so excited to embark on this journey and am happy that there is a forum that is dedicated to Yorkies. I do have two questions though: 1. Bentley had his rabies shot about a week ago and right around the injection area there is now a quarter sized bump. It doesn't hurt him or even bother him and it just appeared and is not getting smaller or bigger. Any thoughts? He didn't have this issue with his worming shots. 2. Flea control. We just bought a house, with an acre, in the middle of the woods. We don't have tick problems, but do have fleas. We have treated the yard, but not with spray because Bentley likes to eat grass and I don't want to chance it. My vet said advantage works and she gave me some to try - he is reacting well to it, but it doesn't seem to last 4 weeks. I have read a lot about Frontline, what are peoples thoughts? This questions could have already been answered, so I am sorry, I am still learning. Thank you for taking the time to read about us and have a great day! Melissa and Bentley |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hello, congrats and WELCOME ! I don't know a whole lot about fleas, bc we don't have a big problem w/ them here, but I know someone will help you. As for the vax area - this is not uncommon, but unfortunate. Sometimes at the spot of a shot (esp. rabies), a bare or crusty area will develop - and the hair may or may not grow back there (my Wylie's did not). Is the bump "spreading outward" or more like swelling up away from the skin? Is the hair gone? My Vet Derm did tell me that if/when this happens to a dog, it can be much worse the next time - ie, a bigger bump, a bigger area...and that was not great to hear. She said that for small dogs who have this vasculitis reaction, she recommends not giving the entire vaccine, but it's tough to find a vet who will agree with that, ususally.

| Aw welcome to YT. Your gunna love it here. There is so much information. Congratulations on your baby. I use frontline on my babies and I haven't seen 1 flea on them and I know they are out there. Some say they wait 6 weeks or so, but I put it on them every 4 weeks. Coco and Pebbles share one vile and Trixie gets her own. I haven't treated my yard either because mine are goats too!! I have heard that it is not uncommon for the area where they got the shot to be raised a bit but none of mine had this issue. I'm sure there is someone here who has more experience with these little boogers and could let you know. Welcome to yorkie talk. Be careful though it is addicting here. Enjoy your baby they are amazing little creatures. Would love to see some pictures of him. Sounds like you are doing everything right. He is a smart little cookie.

| :) Thank you both! I was SO excited to finally get my puppy! I call him my baby... We have had him for about 6 weeks now. We chose Bentley because it thought it went well with his personality. Thank you for the comment, in regards to the shot. It doesn't seem to be swelling at all - it just appeared. His hair is still there and the area under the skin has not changed his actual skin color. No flaking, no pain, nothing. It has been this way for about 4 days and came suddenly. I am going to go to the vet Monday if it doesn't go down, just to make sure! Again, I appreciate the feedback! |

| You might just want to give a quick call to ease your mind. If you bring him in you will probably get charged.

| What a doll. He is adorable. Reminds me of my Coco when he was a baby. Such a cutie. Can I give you a friendly tip? When you take a picture of him get down on the floor so he isn't looking up. Then you can really capture his cuteness and personality. Try it. I learned this tip when I had my "skin" kids. And I have some great pictures of them as well. Just thought I'd pass it along. Again he is definatly a keeper!! Let us know what the vet said we care about your little guy.

| Hello and Welcome to YT!!! I use Frontline Plus as it helps with the mosquitos we are over loaded with here in VA. I've never seen a flea on my babies and Barley gets a bath every week. As for the bump...I've had two experiences with these. The first was my toy poodle. She had a reaction as a puppy, but has never had another one since. The second was Barley (Yorkie) I got him from a rescue group so I had no idea what the bump on his neck was. I took him to my vet and they ran tests on it and $150 later I was told they didn't know what caused it for sure but they suspected shots, and I knew it was not cancer. Within two weeks it was gone, but he was on antibiotics for the kennel cough he came to me with. Hope that helps you some. I'm off to check out your photos too )
