Donating YT 500 Club Member | How to improve coat? Wondering what can be done to improve a Yorkie's coat? What products? Anything really. I'm switching their diet over to Wellness puppy which has Well Coat Omega 3 & 6 mix in it but wondering if there is anything else I can do? Any suggests?

| To be honest - yorkies are pretty much born with the coat they will have. You can add Omega for shine and make sure you do not use harsh products on it, so you do not strip it. But all in all - you cannot make it better. Some are just born with that terrier rough coat and that is their genes. Some are born with the cotton coat, grows fast, but mats. And some are born with a nice silky coat. To make a good coat continue to grow, you can wrap it to protect the hairs from rough material, such as the sofas, rugs, etc... And keep their hair away from grass. Also just keep it clean. Other than that, JMO, I have found there is no magical product that can change a coat. |

| Although you can't change the type of coat your yorkie has, I have recently done some things different that have made a HUGE difference in the manageability of my girls coats as well as the appearance. I stopped using Grizzly Salmon oil and instead give them each 1/4 tsp of melted coconut oil (extra virgin, organic) with their dinner. Then, when I bathe them, I also melt about the same abount of coconut oil and add it to the shampoo in my hand and then work it really well into their coat/skin and let it sit for about a minute. I use Buddy Wash for Sissy and Minksheen for Angel. I then use the BioGroom Silk Conditioning Rinse on both of them. In between baths, every other day I use the BioGroom Mink Oil Conditioning Spray. It does not make them greasy, continues the shine and also makes the coat very manageable. I have several friends who have known the girls since I got them and they have all asked what I've been doing differently lately. Sissy has a very cottony coat that is brittle and doesn't grow, and Angel has a silky coat that tangles easily. With this regimen, Sissy's coat has started to grow and Angel is so easy to comb out!!!!! BTW - coconut oil has many benefitial health properties to it that the Omegas do not. These photos are after their weekly bath.... Sissy Angel

| When yokies coat grows to a certain length, usually around 9 months to 1 year (depending on coat and length), we wrap it. I wait till it reaches the floor, but others wrap a lot sooner. You oil it and that papers and part the coat in sctions and then wrap it up/fold the hair into the wraps. There are some great sites out there to give directions for this. We do this for show. If your yorkie is just a pet, I would not bother with this. It is a lot of work! Jon-An's Yorkshire Terrier Coat Care - coat care Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How I wrap a show dog) - wraps The only thing I do is bath with Panteene shampoo and conditioner and oil with Neutrgena Bath oil mised with water. I feed Natures Variety Chicken. That is it! Last edited by topknot; 08-09-2009 at 05:35 AM. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Bummer, they don't have enough hair is the problem. They're both a little over six months and not much hair. I don't even think there's enough to wrap then. One isn't as bad as the other but still not much of it. Thought there might be something I could do in regards to hair growth...guess not though. Oh well, upside, it's easy. I just wash them in the tub and towel dry...they love the towel part...

| DO not rub their hair with the towel after their bath. I just pat hair with it to absorb the extra water left on their coat. Then I brush and blow dry. Be sure to use a pin brush. Never rub coat as it tends to break hairs. And never brush a dry coat. Always mist with conditioner/water mixture and then brush. |

| Yes. I never rub their coats. And I always mist. The cotton coats can get frizzy when you brush without misting. Their hair is like a piece of yarn and think of when you rub that piece of yarn - what happens to it? It frizzes. |
