| Annoyed With Myself To start: I like to think I'm decently knowledgeable when it comes to dog food. So Addie has been having diarrhea lately. It's not every day, but it's often enough to have me worried. I completely stopped giving her treats. She only gets water and her Evo dog food because it worried me so much. Well, anyway, she was still having problems, so I thought it must be her dog food. I just went to Pet Supplies Plus to get some food. I was thinking maybe Sold Gold or Canidae. Well, there was a worker there who asked me if I needed some help. After I told him Addie's problem, he immediately went to the Nutro Ultra Holistic dog food. He was so persistent that it was even better than Evo, that I decided to buy a bag DESPITE the fact that I didn't think the ingredients were that top notch. After I bought it, I went home and checked it out online before feeding it to Addie (so just now). Immediately I see a lot of the brand was recalled in April and several hits were about how Nutro killed an owner's dog. And then there were several comments about how it was really upsetting for several owners' dogs. I know all dog foods will have a bad reaction to some dog somewhere, but when I checked Evo, I can't recall ever reading such horrible things. I totally KNEW better in the store based on the fact there were so many ingredients I didn't recognize on the bag and the fact I'd never heard of it before. I know that just because someone works in a pet store doesn't mean they know everything, but I can't help feeling that they know more than me anyway. I'm so annoyed with myself! So I'm going to go back to the store now, return it and buy something that doesn't kill my dog. Grr. Hopefully this is a lesson to others to not always trust someone just because they work somewhere. By the way, as soon as I decided to buy it, he handed me a coupon for it. So obviously it was a dog food that the store workers are told to push. Why can't people give advice based on what they know is the best and not on what the store demands they push? I would never do that at the expense of a dog's diet.

| Ugh. I'm glad you were able to research it before you gave any to Addie. I would definitely return it too! A dog who goes to my girls' daycare recently passed away from tainted Nutro food. It's just so sad - I still don't think enough people are aware of how many dogs have died after eating it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sorry about your baby, I hope she's doing better. You know, much of what is written on the web is incorrect and the rating sites only use one reviewer for each food. Raters have no special credentials either, or training in nutrition. In short, there is a lot of incorrect information out there, and it can be very confusing. We often give up what we know because someone seemly has more credentials. Truthfully, I don't think we know that much about nutrition, but, I wouldn't be persuaded by any salesmen working in a store, even a specialty store, websites, and other people who sell food. They are all going to push their particular product. Here's a site that has some wide believed myths, and meal is not necessary a bad term, and because there is no water content it means more of the meat product. Quote:
Finding a dog food that works with your dog, can be very challenging, I think taking away all treats, was a good idea, but sometimes it takes a little time for the digestion system to recover, and sometimes these little buggers get a "treat" from somewhere that we don't even know about. I think I would wait a week before switching foods, and I'd even do a vet check first, if the dog had been on that food for a while without any problems.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | By the way, the author of the site I linked has very good credentials, and this is something that should be checked before automatically assuming what a website says is true. Quote:

I think I am going to keep her on Evo for a bit longer since she never has had problems with it before and really loves the food. If I don't see improvement, though, I probably will take her to the vet just to be on the safe side. I'm also thinking if Evo doesn't work out, I'm going to either switch Addie to Orijen 6 fish with sea vegetables or start cooking her food myself. I know it will be a lot of extra work, but I really do want to make sure Addie gets the best. And most importantly: I'm going to listen to myself before I listen to random people at pet stores.

Great idea! And remember to use their help for such things as, "Can you tell me where I can find the . . . "
