Please do not put the pup in bed with you. Yes at night put the puppy in the crate, close the door, this will help train them that is where they sleep until they are old enough to be out. I have three of my 7 that are crate trained, and I love it because if I have to take them someplace I can always take a crate and they are find with it. Also in a car, please do not let them ride on your lap. Them become a missle if anything happens and have no protection from the car.

Other then giving them good vet treatment and lots of love you will find the puppy being the joy of your life. Bless you and your new baby, I am sure all will be fine.
Thank you so much for your advice! I will start her with what the breeder tells me or gives me tomorrow. This leads me to another question when I take her with me places is it best to seat belt her crate in the seat? I go pick her up tomorrow the drive is'nt far but I had just wondered the best way to drive her back home and I will be bringing her crate. Thanks!

I have been able to use it on my rescue boy, Bernie too, although I've begun keeping his hair super short so its not necessary.

If you are going to Petco, I believe they sell a couple of brands of bully sticks. Some smell worse than others, I can never remember which is which, but my nose knows. Just watch closely with these or any chew toys as pieces can come loose and become lodged in their throats. I even had a red kong do that once with Ginger. Just because these babies are little, don't imagine for a second they don't have strong jaws. The rule in my house, if they have a chew toy they are in the same room as I am. If I can't be there I put it up.

I would also put together a little first aid kit. There is a sticky here with a lot of good info. Some of the items in that kit have saved us in the past. Also, post the numbers to your vet an poison control
I hope you never need them, but you don't want to waste precious time searching for them if you ever do. I actually have my vets # programmed into my phone. LOL, no I don't call very often, but in an emergency, its there.

Welcome and good luck and I can't wait to see pictures and hear about your pups antics.
thanks i found this to be useful to me as well!

Hi Gingersgirlsmom it was very nice to read your posting thank you SO much for everything you have listed and all the great info! I'm getting a list together that way I will have everything like you said 'just incase' I'm a worrier and want to do everything just right...I definatley will keep any toys that look suspicious of coming loose up when I'm not in site. I'm worried sick I've been cleaning like crazy I have 2 children 3 and 8 and I've made them put every small toy up just to be safe and let Karlee get used to everything. I have warned and told the kids we have to treat her like a baby and anything small she could get in her mouth has to stay put up where she can't reach it to chew it or swallow. That's my biggest fear of her getting something she does'nt need to eat or swallow that could hurt her. Thanks again for the posting I'm so eager to get Karlee tomorrow and then at the same time nervous I just want to do everything right I'll update tomorrow how it goes once we get her home!

Aww thank you!! (only issues I have is I already know she's gonna be SPOILED rotten!!) My two kiddos are spoiled rotten and now I know they will be spoiling her and me too...as well as hubby even though he really is'nt admiting to it just yet...I'm waiting but he was only agreeing for the puppy since we can't have anymore kids I told him we needed a puppy (had a kidney cancer issue a couple yrs back but doing great now but I can't have anymore children so this was my idea to have a new sweet baby doggie!) Well when we went to go see our sweet little Karlee from the lady we are purchasing her from he was acting all macho and was like its whatever if you want the puppy that's fine...a few seconds went by and I turned to see him making puppy faces at her and petting her while I was still holding her. After we came home my husband was like she won't be so bad she seems like a sweet puppy but your gonna have your work cut out she's yours LOL- I just know the way he is acting she's gonna win him over big time and he will be probaly spoiling her more than me!!!!! HAHA!

Welcome, You are gonig to LOVE having a yorkie they are the best :-)

to answer your questions about the food I can tell you NOT to give her anything Nutro or Nutromax, it was recalled and apparently making furbabies very sick and some were even dying, we were giving ours nutromax but as soon as i found out i switched to purina and they LOVE it! don't be surprised if she gets diarhea for a couple of days abruptly changing a dogs food can upset their stomachs so just give her a little time to adjust.

If you do decide to crate train be prepared to lose a few hours of sleep listening to her wimper. I found that if you sleep in an old T shirt for a couple of nights to make it smell like you then put it in her cage, also if you can get an old clock that ticks and put it i her cage wrapped up it sounds like mom's heart beat and will help comfort her.

I just went out and bought a whole bunch of new toy for my babies and the favorite has been a stuffed giraffe from pet smart, he's white and orange. I don't know what is so great about him but the dogs love him and only play with him, none of the other ones i got, we've been through 4 already i just went to pet smart and bought all of the ones they had on the shelf so now i have a life time supply haha!

I give my babies a bath once every 2 weeks unless they get exceptionally stinky, their hair is like human hair so it does get greasy from petting them and what not, i keep their hair really short in the summer and cut it once a month, one month i do it and the next i send them to the groomers. during the winter they go maybe every 2 months and i just keep them brushed.

Hope i helped a little, as you come across more questions please come and ask us there's lots of help available.

I just finished reading the rest of your posts so i have more to write haha.

When i had just shilo i went through a small bag of food maybe once a month. I would leave her bowl full all day and at night she would get a little bit of wet food, i got the big cans and a can would last me a week. Now we go through a 40lbs bag of food every two weeks but i have 2 yorkies and a boxer.

My husband was the same way as yours! It was so funny. She came with me when we got married and before we moved in together he kept saying shes a stupid little dog and he wanted to punt her like a foot ball (of course he never did i would have killed him!!) but then one night i heard him say i love you to her and i called him out on it and he just kept denying it saying she was just a stupid little dog, but now they are inseperable and he spoils her worse than me! I don't think you need to worry about your husband haha!

This definatley helped a lot I really appreciate it! I like the idea of grooming at home some and then going to the groomers that sounds great I never thought about doing it that way that will work out great! Everything sounds like good advice I really am getting nervous she will be here tomorrow afternoon so tomorrow night I know things are going to be quite different LOL but very exciting!

aww how sweet!!! I know it will be the same way, my husband loves dogs but he just get aggrivated we have several outdoor cats and a dog outside and he usually does the feeding and things for them so he does'nt want the extra responsiblity which I totally understand but he's already asking me questions too about what i'm finding out on this site and seems really intrested...he already loves her...but won't admit it just yet LOL

Question #1 What is recommended to feed my Yorkie? I've read a lot of horror stories over some types of dog foods and want to feed my girl something healthy.

Question #2 Also how do I prepare for the first few nights with her. I have a baby play pen and wondered would it be a good idea to put her crate, blanket, water bottle and food in the playpen and let her sleep near our bed I want to make her adjustment to our new home as easily as possible.

Question #3 can you tell me some great toys for a puppy to start off with (I have a several already but just wondered some that are really good for a Yorkie and my main concern very safe)

Question #4 I read about bath time to use warm towels or blow dry your Yorkie and also wondered I want to keep my Yorkie with shorter hair would it be best to trim her each week before bath time?

Any advice for me would be appreciated even if its a question I did'nt ask I just want some ideas for her first week home with us to get her adjusted. Thanks!!!
Welcome to YT! I hope you'll find great info here, I mean it seems like you already have

1. I have just adopted my puppy 2 weeks ago. She's about 5 months so what I do is mix Nature's Balance -small bites for small breeds- with her old sample formula her breeder gave to me (50/50). And before each meal, I give her a little supplement of Nutrical for Puppies and take her outside to relieve herself. Nutrical is a kind of puppy vitamin that tastes sweet to puppies. It gives nice sugar balance to avoid hypoglocemia (a disease that puppies can obtain around 12-18 weeks get when having low blood sugar).

2. Most puppies will whine on the first nights. You might want to keep her close to you, so she knows you're right there. My puppy, and this is totally her preference, loves closed spaces. I keep her in my bathroom, which is very big, and she knows I'm there. So she pretty much sleeps through the whole night Well until around 7:30, which is when she'll start barking

3. I first bought Tinky a small bobo toy from Petsmart. A mini version of this http://www.dog-online.co.uk/images/mini_loofadog.jpg. But other then that, all of her toys, except for one, squeak when you squeeze them, which gives her lots of interest in chewing on them. Something like this http://www.zooplus.co.uk/bilder/mini...nspielze_1.jpg.

4. Most owners blow dry, which is probably the easiest way but to be honest, I towel dry my baby. I don't know why, but its a preference. I just tend to brush her afterwards until her coat is tangle free.

Extra advice: The first week will be very confusing for the pup. If she has an accident, firmly say no, and put her somewhere where she CANNOT watch you clean her mess up. To me, if Tinky watched me clean up her mess, she'd probably think its okay to relieve herself there and pee there again.
I reccomend buying a gallon of Nature's Miracle, that stuff works the best
I hope my advice helped you mucho.

xoxo,
Tiffany

Welcome to Yorkie Talk and the wonderful world of being owned by a yorkie.
They are such wonderful little creatures. Be very, very careful......she will (if she hasn't already) melt your heart in a blink of the eye.
I don't know that I have anything to add to what has already been said. You have gotten some great advice.
I am so happy for you. You sound like you are going to be a wonderful mommy to her. She is a lucky little girl. (By the way, I really like her name).
Please post pics when you get some and keep us posted on her progress.
Take care and Congrats!!!!!
