I also have a balcony right off my living room and I let my 10lb Lucky out there because instead of railing it has a type of criss cross fence all around it. I also let Bella out there just as long as the curtains have been pulled back and I can see her. I know there is no way she can fall because there aren't any oppenings that her little head could fit through. Plus, my balcony faces the canyons and I live in southern cali, so the weather is never too hot out here. Still, I get that you can never be too careful.:thumbup: |

I have heard of people using a small web chicken wire. Just staple on the inside of the rails. It is not very expensive, so maybe if you buy some, you could tell your neighbor that you have "extra" and maybe she would be interested in using it for a "safer" balcony for her dog, too. (I know, I know...she is probably an idiot... but we have to think of the DOG in this case) |

I would never let Roxy out on a balcony like that. She already thinks she is a lion (or eagle) and a jump like that would kill her. I cant say the same thing for the owner of the pug, but as for me....NO WAY! |
Bailey has never been on a balcony before. He jumps off the arm of the couch on to the floor loads tho (which i know aint the same haha) My bed is high and he will jump off that too thinking nothing of it. I get so worried i wont even let him in my bedroom now (that and the fact he humps my toys) I tell him not to get on the couch arms but he still does when i aint lookin, when i say down he just jumps onto the floor. i'm worried one day he will hurt himself. If i did have a balcony i wud get wire up coz i know Bailey, he wud love to jump off it eeek! I cant even open my windows i have to put them on a catch coz he jumps on to the couch and barks at people and i am worried he wud jump out. I think if ur dog will stick its head between balcony bars or through a window, it wont be long b4 he would jump. I hope this little pug doesnt jump before u can give the owner some friendly advice. I have a cute story about our balcony. We live on the fourth floor, but there is no way they could jump off the balcony as it was built with brick and is quite high. The doggies couldn't see anything beyond the balcony from their height and Cash didn't like going out there at first. One day, I just clicked that he couldn't see the view and I picked him up and let him sit with me. Hehe, now every time I sit on the balcony, I have to have both of them on my lap so they can enjoy the view! |
I would never chance it. If my pups could fit through then the only time they would be allowed out is on a leash with me. There have been too many innocent dogs who have been physically harmed from something we can prevent. When I was younger our neighbor had a great Dane, one day he went running up to the balcony and just didn't stop... He died and he had lived at that house since he was a pup. I know there were at least two yorkies on YT that have lost there lives in the same manner. Remember our dogs think they are lions... They may be okay for a while maybe even years but it only takes one time and they are seriously injured or lost forever... that isnot a chance I would be willing to take. |
Asking for trouble It seems to me it's like playing Russian Roulette with your dog by allowing it on a balcony where it can put his head [to get stuck and strangled] and body inbetween slates. How much would it take to just put up some screening material or fencing up if you have to leave the dog out there. I personally would never do it. Especially in the hot sun. That's just cruel to the dog and also inconsiderte to the neighbors. |

My neighbor also allows his three out on the seconed floor balcony and yes, their little heads fit throw the openings and so will their bodies:eek: It's a mother and two daughter's. The girls have long tails and they are the most loving Yorkies I have ever met. Very small. It scares the daylights out of me because when they see Buddy they all start jumping and putting their heads throw the opening. I walk fast and make him not look up for fear they will jump to get to him. They love each other so much. I have mentioned it once but I guess he didn't listen. He is a wonderful father to these girls but I have no idea what goes threw their heads. I think they think they won't jump. But they are so wrong. |
Not to mention the heat and he's alone out there! The thing that concerns everyone here is the balcony, but in response to the original post, i'm most concerned that 1. the dog is a toy breed and left unsupervised anywhere without the owner right beside him 2. the heat, doggies that size can't be left in the heat like that, he'll get too hot and die from that if the jumping part doesn't get him first I hope you can talk to the neighbors in a kind manner and tell them that you are worried about their puppy being left along in the heat. The idea about offering chicken wire to use is probably the kindest way i've seen on here yet. But yea you should mention something to them. My dog won't have a balcony or deck, but my aunt's has a high up deck, but that pup is NEVER outside alone. Hope that helps |
