How Long Does it Take to Potty Train? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I need help! My YT is 16 weeks old. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old (half her life!). She is not potty trained yet. Sometimes, if I am in the room, she will dash over to her pad and urinate on it and I praise her profusely and give her a treat. If I am in another room she will go somewhere I can't see her and wet just anywhere, it doesn't matter if it is tile or carpet. Also, she will not poop on the potty pad even if I catch her getting ready to go and pick her up and take her to the pad. She just shuts it off and waits until later. I have tried taking her outside after meals and naps, but we live in the country and she got fleas from the yard. My husband will not even consider crate training because he thinks it is awful and she doesn't have room to play in the crate. Will she ever get housebroken? She is so smart in all other ways.

She is still young, give it time. I don’t believe in crate training either but you could confine her to a smaller area with her toys and pad. You could use an x-pen which a lot of yt'ers have for their lil ones.

She's still very young.
It could take anywhere from 6 months-1 year, or more. Yorkies are known to be
tough little ones.

Do a search on this forum for "Potty Training" and you will find loads of info.

I got lucky with Mandie and she was pretty well potty trained by the beginning of Jan and I got her in Nov. Not really sure how it happend. She wouldn't use the puppy pads. If they were on the floor she was ripping them to shreds.

I read somewhere to put a bell at the back door and ring it each time you go out to let them know that they are supposed to ring the bell if they have to go. Didnt work with mine but it might work for you!

I use the rascaldog litterbox and it is amazing. It seems to call to them. My cookie trained in a weekend. I did have her in an expen though. Check it out on RASCAL DOG LITTER BOX COMPANY, LLC HOME PAGE. Let her know i sent you.

it takes months.. Tucker was 7 months old before he was fully trained. You need to stay consistant, take your pup out often and offer lots of treats and praise. Have lots of patience, some yorkies are more stubborn than others, but your pup will eventually get it.. good luck!!

Roxie is 2 and there are still accidents. Most of the time those are my fault for not paying attention or getting back home to let her out. They are tiny so it's very hard for them to hold it as long as a bigger dog. Someone else already said to be consistant and I agree. You have to have set times to go out and stick to them many times a day. Large amounts of patients. It's so hard to look at that cute little face and get upset with them anyway!!

I think I got real lucky with Fiona. When I first got her she only had two accidents, both on hardwood floors! She goes on command! I love it! She will bark at me when she needs to go out, just be constant! your baby is still young. i would just come up with a word when she is actually in the act of urinating or deficating. i'll tell fiona to "go squat" and she will pee, and then I'll say " go poopy" and she usually will go too!

I am right there with you on this. Roxy will poop on the pad but she does not pee there all the time. She loves her treats and come running for them after she goes potty! I am just being consistant and praying that it sticks. One thing that I have seen which works for Roxy is having her expen set up with her bed, food, water, and puppy pad. I keep her puppy pad in the same place all the time and she knows right where it is. I think that is a big help cause she doesnt have to find it. Just be persistant, it will pay off

These little angels are stubborn.

My Max took about two months to really understand the pee pad. Those two months was the hardest for me. I thought he would never get it. He's 6 months old and will pee on the pad consistently. However if the pee pad is "used" more than three times he will pee off the pad.

Like the others said, she is still young..so give her time.

We tired pads and they didn't work with Myah. She will only go outside, which is fine by me. I did use a crate with her and it worked wonderful.

You do have to confine her to a small space when you can't keep both eyes on them. That is where the crate or xpen come in handy. You can also gate off a room, usually where the peepad is. Put her there when you are busy cooking, cleaning etc...anytime you can't keep both eyes on her. One of these days, it will click for her.

Keep praising her when she does go where you want and in no time she'll be trained.

Im having the same problem with Zsa Zsa.... she only uses the pad if I catch her and take her there...needless to say I am buying an xpen...lol
