Default Afraid of Thunder Storms!!!!!!!!!

Forgive me if this has been posted before. I was just curious how many of you have dogs that are terrifed of storms. Mollie lets us know when it's getting ready to storm she just goes nuts but, she wasn't like this until 4 years ago after she had her puppies. Now she absolutely drives us crazy when it's storming. She shakes uncontrolably(sp?) and pants worse than she did when she was in labor and she is either underneath my feet or sitting as close to me as she can get. It even gets so bad sometimes at night when were sleeping that she wakes us up from all of her panting and shaking.

I've tried everything I can think of to calm her down, loving on her, holding her, playing ball with her which is her absolute favorite thing to do and, nothing seems to help.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. As I sit on the couch typing this she is beside of me shaking and panting. Guess what's coming.

Thanks again.

My Jewels was afraid of storms when she was younger but she outgrew it. When it did bother her I would just try to play with her or do something with her so she could get her mind off of it

That use to work with Mollie but, not anymore. I hope that she soon outgrows it.

i do the same thing with lexi. when it thunders, i play with lexi to let
her forget about it as its a happy thing and nothing to be afraid of.
the same with the fireworks on the 4th of july or any loud noises for
that matter.

So far Baiiley is doing OK with stroms but Scooter was so afraid of them that the vet gave him a mild sedative to be given 30 mins prior. I couldn't tell it did much good though but he slept a lot afterwards. I have a friend whose dog had a heart attack and died during a strom.

Hehe ....
It's getting to be the wet season here in FL
and my boys had their first T'storm the other day

They started yapping .... mainly because of the noise I think it surprised them more than anything
But as time went on they got more and more used to it

Them becoming frightened by storms has a lot to do with how you react to it too

They are going to be startled by the noise and it's going to get them excited .... if you try and distract them with something they like that is calming ..... giving them food
or feeding them some treats
it will help
Don't try and converse with them
Don't try and calm them with words
Them trying to listen and hear two different things at the same time will just get them that much more excited

I have an 11 year old shih tzu that is so afraid of storms, that if it happens when we're in bed, she will tear up poster board we have that is across our gate (to keep the pup from going through the gate) to where her gums bleed. I know the vet has meds they can give you for them, I used to have some, but, haven't had them in a few years. Mom used to have a shih tzu that was also afraid of them, she found turning the t.v on would help some

Last year my 3 yr old acted scared, I boo-boo'd by babying him and consoling him. That made it even worse. I did what the others said, tried to play with him and act as if nothing is wrong during a storm. It has seemed to help unless lightening strikes really close, then he shakes and runs and hides.

My 4 year old lab is terrified of t-storms/fireworks, she is the first and so far only dog I have had that is. She will shake, pant and get close to someone as soon as she senses something happening, it can be sunny and bright out and she will start up... and sure enough there will be a storm in a couple hours either here or close by. I have had to resort to putting her in a crate if she is upset about one during the night time hours because she will jump on one of the beds and shake the whole bed with her trembling. The vet had told me I could give her benedryl to help calm her, I tried that once and it didn't seem to really help any. I've read that the best thing to do is ignore them so they realize that it's no big deal, I know that doesn't work. I really think that there are just some dogs that will have this issue and really isn't much we can do about it.

Jada does the same thing ...Panting ,shaking , scared to deat and she is 3 years old ...I was going to buy childrens benedryl but didn't know if its what I needed it said sneezing ,cold ext. I also want to have it on hand in case of bee stings ..I used to get the med where I am allergic to bees and one of the black poms pup I had got stung I gave it one of the pill cause it aleast takes 40 min to get in town to a vet by the time I got her there ,They said it was lucky that I gave it to her or she prob wouldn't been here. With are Baset he was scared of storms also he would jump in my bed pant hard, tongue purple and shaking...I had to give him a valium and that controlled him alot but I know Jada is to small she's 3 or 4 lbs.
(what about that calming stuff people here says they give there yorkies)
I think they said they give it to them when riding in car

One of the problems is that the very thing we do that feels natural, is to comfort them, we think this helps, but it actually makes a dog feel more anxious, because they then feel there is a reason to be afraid. Behaviorists say that the best way is to act like nothing is going on; no baby talk! Distracting them is fine, but try to act as normal as possible. We don' really get many thunderstorms in AZ, and I'm glad, because I think I would make Joey too afraid of them, they still scare me.

As I write this, Bitsy, my terrier mix is about to have a heart attack because of the storm. It's rained for 5 days straight here in Tampa and Bitsy has been miserable. I went to the vet today and got her some homeopathic anti-anxiety drops which help a little but not totally. I don't coddle her or even look at her and I behave very calmly but she is just terrified. Scooter, however, is completely oblivious of what's going on. He is playing and acting like nothing is wrong. I feel so sorry for Bitsy and any animal that is so fearful of storms.

I love storms, infact, hubby and I a lot of times get lawn chairs out and sit in the garage with the door open and watch them. I don't ever baby my shih tzu, but, she jumps up in our laps and just shakes. She's also a nutcase when they're doing fireworks or someone is out this way hunting and shooting a gun. I know one day, this is what's going to kill her

I' ve gotten to where I just try to ignore Mollie and not coddle her too much which, is more than I can say for my husband she is her daddy's girl. The way she was acting earlier I thought that we were going to have a bad storm but, it's passed thank goodness.

We tried everything with Scooter, even turning the TV up, but nothing worked. He slept on the foot of our bed and if it stormed all night, we were awake all night. We're not afraid of storms but we do respect them.
