| New Yorkie I have a question...I'm in the process of getting ready to purchase my new yorkie and I was wondering what things will need to get me started. I figured I should start getting some things gradually because I don't want it to be overwhelming once I get him. Because I know how I can get...I'll want to get everything just because it looks cute. Also, is there a preference in the type of bowls they should use.(Example:stainless steel/practice) Thanks for the help. |

| I don't recommend a dual bowl for food and water as puppies can be quite messy sometimes. You can use either a stainless steel or glass bowl for water. Never use plastic because continued, longtime use can lead to contact dermatitis.

| Thanks for the help. What brand should I use for shampoo and conditioner and for the comb and brush; and can they be purchased at Wal-Mart or should I go to a pet store(ie: PetSmart)? |

| Well, I use the same brush for Kacee as I did for Muffin. I got it at Wal-Mart a long, long time ago. It has metal bristles on one side and soft bristles on the other. The metal bristles are great, especially for puppy coats. I have a metal comb that I got from the groomer. It has narrow teeth at one end and medium teeth on the other. I've seen the same combs at Wal-Mart. I just use the Oatmeal shampoo from Wal-Mart. It has worked fine for me. Muffin had silky hair and so does Kacee, so what I use isn't a big problem. I use a spray-on conditioner found in the baby section and use it lightly...not too much. I also use baby shampoo on her face, so it won't hurt her eyes. I have always bathed once a week.

| If and when you change the puppy feed to a different brand, mix half and half so it is a gradual change and your puppy’s digestive system will adapt to the new feed better. If the puppy refuses to eat, mix a little water with the feed so it is soft. Your puppy will be eating dry food from the age of 8 weeks. Have feed and fresh water available to the puppy at all times. REST AND RECREATION It is very important for your puppy to get six hours of rest for every one-hour of playtime. If your puppy gets worn down from too much playtime it may become stressed. Playtime to rest time may be increased, as the puppy gets older. PRECAUTIONARY In case of stress give the puppy a dose of Nutri-Cal. This is only precautionary and may never become a problem if the puppy is not stressed. When in doubt always give 1 to 2 drops. Hypoglycemia is a problem, which may or may not affect your pet and is common in all toy breeds normally due to negligence of its owner. It is important to provide proper electrolytes and a vitamin supplement such as Nutri-Cal (which will be provided at time of purchase). For the first 5 days we highly recommend giving your puppy 1 to 2 drops twice daily to aid in the transition period. At bath time put a drop of mineral oil in each eye to protect puppies eyes from shampoos and try not to get water inside the ears. ********** I found the above at a local breeder's website and thought it might help you, too. Is this your first yorkie? I know you must be excited.
