Paddy and Alfie Well here we go A story of two Yorkies Paddy (deceased) and Alfie I hope my story will inspire others to take on these feisty characters It all started in 2002, my friend Tom had been asked to rescue a dog(unknown), Tom already had a Boxer called George, who had been weaned from a puppy, Tom being a softy like me said ok, lets get him. Paddy had been found living under a car in Manchester, in a right mess, he was a miniature Yorkie, they say he may have been living rough for 6 months, he was a mess. Tom took him home where his health detiororated, In the next few months Tom spent £1300 on him, from his rough living he had an ear infection Tom and his wife nursed him back to health , Jackie had to milk his ear every couple of hours and he made it After this he had to have 9 teeth removed, as they were decayed badly Story to continue |
Tom drove 200 miles to get him as no one else would spend money on him After Paddy's recuperation, Tom set about walking him with George(a grand fellow and a good friend of mine) well, Paddy decided he wanted to be Alpha The comical bits are that Paddy would nudge George out of his bowl and steal his food, and generally chase George around the room so Paddy could claim territory We had a big Boxer frightened of a small Yorkie This continued for two years Several times Tom said to me, Take Paddy home with you Paddy loved me when I visited Quite a few people asked to take him home, yet Tom refused as he had saved and repaired him He said to me one day, Paddy is making Georges life hell and you are the only person who I trust, can you look after him I said , I can't Tom 6 months later after another couple of requests, I rang my wife and told her , we now own a dog Tom wanted him with me because he knew I could afford the vets fees, he didn't trust no one else, as Paddy was fragile We picked Paddy up and fell in Love straight away more to come |
Paddy was now at home with us, He settled in quick as he had no pressure from George I hasten to add that George was glad to see the back of him (more of that later) For a year or so Paddy mulled around contented in my house Then he started yelping when eating, I inspected his teeth and found some more decay A visit to the vet, found that he had more bad teeth, this time he had 13 removed I said to the vet, he has none left He replied, don't worry, although he has lost his front teeth, he still has his left canines and his back teeth I was concerned, but Paddy made good use of his remaining teeth, confirming that the vet was correct in saying he could still eat ok Paddy was still as good at a bone after |
That session with his teeth cost me more money that I will admit to paying, but Paddy was fighting fit again. He was such a Grand little Man that I would have given my life for him We had some good times me and my little mate Some time later, he was yelping when eating again, I was worried, he wouldn't let me open his mouth for inspection. So another vet visit, turned out he had a tick on his lower lip, vet removed it and paddy was fighting fit again Vet already knew him and called him the Yorkie who thinks he is a Rottweiller and didn't charge me |
This is a long story before we get to Alfie Hope you have patience |
We booked a holiday to Portugal and Tom agreed to look after Paddy, after all he was Tom's pal also. When we got back, George was sulking in the corner, Paddy had taken over again, my mate George came to me all sheepish as if to say, why did you bring him here. So back to normal for George and we took Paddy home |
Having net probs Have written 2 more pages and my server went down will continue story tommorow, when these people get their act together Grgghhh! this has been happening for a while we live in a village and they can't secure our line so much for technology |
Paddy had blooshot eyes and was having trouble breathing. He was now about 12 years old. An xray revealed he had an enlarged heart and Liver, his heart was pressing his trachea against his spine. He spent two days in the vets and was glad to come home. Vet wanted to put him to sleep, I refused. The last two years of his life was on medication Finally at age 14, he went lasergic with bloodshot eyes again, he died in my arms on the way to the vet, but not before licking me on the nose, he knew I was with him. Later that night my son in law helped me bury him. Boy oh boy, did I cry Next chapter coming, 3 months of grieving and take on another rescue next story soon folks |
So sorry about your dear Paddy. I can't wait for the next installment! It's like reading a book. |
Iam getting engrossed in your story and looking forward to the next ins.tallment. I 2 have and Alfie :D |
Zoe, He was a real character My little mate Paddy was better than all my real friends. Although I only had him for four years it was like a lifetime, we became so close and also Tom was his sidekick, Tom was as gutted as me when he passed away. We buried him in the field behind where we live, it is like a pasture and I planted some snow drops on his last resting place, a couple of years on now and the snow drops are dividing, they are in a large shape with the letter P. He is not forgotten, but to make his passing more special his favourite blanket was one that I stole from a flight on concorde, it has silk edges, he loved it, so it was his burial shroud, a special blanket for a special man. I still have two of these blankets, but Paddy claimed one, so only fitting that he was laid to rest with it. I am sure British Airways wouldn't mind, sshhhh! |
Hiya Julie, love from Staffordshire here So we have another Alfie This will make an interesting story Lets start an Alfie book I have to tell my Alfie story from the beginning and then we can go from page to page. Are you up for writing an Alfie story book |
I enjoyed the Paddy story and now I can't wait for the Alfie story. Please don't make me wait until tomorrow. |
ok Just for Julie, Zoe and Valerie I will sit up a while longer and start the next chapter After which I will start an Alfie thread for a continuing story for all Alfie's |
After Paddy left us life was a little empty. We were still grieving for Paddy for a long time. As a substitute, my neighbour was breeding Zebra Finches, so we bought a large cage and Trevor gave us five Zebra Finches. Within two weeks we were down to two, methinks this is not a good idea, although nearly four years on the two are still with us, we talk most mornings, something like beep beep, they know me and do talk in their own way. But talking to a bird that only goes beep beep is not enough. |
After three months, I was still missing Paddy badly. I talked my wife into checking out rescue centres. At the time I also had a flat in Essex 18 miles north of London, so we got in touch with Battersea dogs home, who promptly sent out an officer for an interview and a home check. The Lady from Battersea was wonderfull, after she heard our story of Paddy we were accepted on the adoption list at Battersea, I considered this an honour, I still have our approval slip. For our overseas friends, Battersea is probably the best known dogs home in the UK Battersea In the meantime while waiting for a call from them we scoured the net and found a site, National Yorkie Rescue Centre and registered with them also. |
Loved the story:pabout little Paddy......he was very lucky to have you in his life and you in his;)waiting for the second part:thumbup: |
Within a week or so, I was working in Kent about 60 miles from the flat and my wife phoned me around lunchtime saying that the yorkie centre had called. They had a four year old Yorkie at a house an hour north of where I was living who was booked in to be put down at 3.30 that afternoon, they had asked five other people to take him but they had all refused as he had bitten the owner, we were the last resort to save him. It was now approx midday, It would take me an hour to get home and another hour to get there, plus traffic and I couldn't leave the job till 3.00 p.m. After a few phone calls and a lot of juggling, I got home and picked my wife up and we got to the offending house at 5.00p.m. |
We arrived at Alfies house The people were really snooty, I was in dusty clothes as I work as an electrician and I felt they were looking down on me, but as we walked in Alfie rolled on his back for a rub and licked me, I don't know if he knew he was due for the executioner that day but he interviewed well |
The Lady owner of Alfie showed me her right arm, It was black and blue and torn to shreds, she explained it was Alfies doing. She explained that Alfie likes getting on the bed and she had shooed him off and got bitten. Alfie had a hard plastic mat in the kitchen for a bed (which they graciously gave us) and an enormous leather bone nearly as big as him which he couldn't get his mouth round, let alone carry. She explained that since they had got two siamese cats which were now allowed on the bed instead of Alfie, that he had turned funny and they had taken him to a dog psychologist and couldn't work out why he had gone nasty. I think she needed a psychiatrist. I had seen enough and we took Alfie home with us. |
On the way home we treated Alfie to a decent soft bed and some smaller bones and some soft toys. It was like all his christmasses had come at once. He settled in pretty easy, although he is a disturbed dog, we have a feeling that the man of the house may have kicked him around as he gets angry when legs move fast torwards him. And now on to his slow recovery Difficult times for him and us were to follow. next episode tommorow folks |
Hope tommorrow comes soon:Dthanx for sharing......see ya tommorrow..have a wonderful night;) |
How long have you had Alfie? I'd bite someone too if I had a crappy bed & toys that I couldn't play with! |
Oh My God, I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next chapter. :) |
Me too......I want to know what happen with Alfie |
next episode oops! Alfie and just jumped on the keyboard and booted me lol Trouble with lap top he wants to be with you, he was watching screen and got bored time for a schmacko and a romp around garden BRB |
Luvfla We have had Alfie for three and a half years now |
Alfie come home We put Alfie in our car and started home On the way home he was going ballistic, barking at everything and foaming at the mouth At this point we realised that he had never been socialised and had been penned in a small room for four years Later to find out from his previous vet that he was five years old June and I were determined to fix him and we were so angry at how he had been treated He came from a posh house, they thought they had a show dog and he didn't fit the bill We don't care about all that We are real people who know dogs So Alfie had a chance Without us he was on his way for a lethal injection |
On the way home we bought him a decent bed and the start of his large toy collection He didn't know what was happening He was so unruly, wouldn't take commands, just generally disobedient He was his own man |
First rule was not on our bed although I have relented now and he has a blanket on the bottom of the bed, he knows his place, any creeping up and its the lounge. He hates being alone |
