My Bernie is a rescue that came to us after being hit by a car at nine months old then abandoned by his family. Thankfully, he survived, but he did need re constructive surgery and still has some problems today. Anyway, one day dh opened the front door and that quick Bernie was on the front lawn . We live on a busy street and I panicked until he was safely back in our house.

Later that day Hubby had constructed a freestanding gate that spans our 9 foot wide foyer. We have never taken it down. No way my baby is getting hit by a car two times in his life!!!

Again, I'm thankful your hubby saw her and that you can all rest easy tonight. Those little ones are so quick!!!

Awww, poor little Bernie! He's been so much. I have also thought of extending the gate that we have blocking the stairs to include the front door/foyer area but the only problem with that is they love to follow me into my office that it would prohibit that. I have to come up with something for just the front door. It would save a few more gray hairs. lol:

Oh gosh Bo.............that is a mother's worst nightmare!!!!! I was just saying to someone today how mine are pretty good about NOT running out the door when I step out to get the mail or if someone is coming in. But maybe that's just because I'm always on the watch for them & tell them to stay or back away. Seriously it's true................you just NEVER KNOW!!!!

Thank God nothing serious happen, we put the playpen around the front door somentimes or hubby use the garage door, other times they behind the baby gate

Im so glad everything is o.k. It is so scarey it happened to me alot when Tia was younger . She is only 9 mths now but for the last 2 mths Ive been making her sit at the front door while it is open while I cut the lawn and it has worked! She won't move unless I call her. It does take time and bravery on our part but the curiosity for them to run out does wear off.

Hubby was definitely glad that he saw her as we would have never even known what happened to her! I'm sure that we would have figured she ran out when he opened it, but how long before we would have figured it out and how far would she have gone!

Both of them really good at the garage door. They understand wait and stay, but I guess that front door is just a whole new domain. They are very good if we have the opportunity to deal with it but this was very out of the ordinary. We need to work on desensitiving them to the front door as we never use it except if the UPS guy comes or if chem lawn puts their paperwork there. Our friends and neighbors all come thru the garage.
