I like both of the pictures your husband drew. I especially love the color picture. I looked up the prices for a pet portrait to compare prices. I find your price to be very reasonable.

Wow, those are awesome. I think the price is very reasonable. I draw as well I did one of Tila, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as your husbands. lol. I got more work to do, I was never very good with my shading.

Wow! I think both pictures are beautiful, your husband is very talented. I think the price is very fair for an orginal piece, especially considering the wok involved.

Those are very beautiful drawings. Your husband should feel very proud of himself. I wish I could draw like that. The most I can do is like spongebob, lol.

I think the price is fair.

I also think the drawings are fantastic! I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, tho, so maybe I'm overawed? Here's a suggestion (and you might already have this so...) Why doesn't your husband post some of his art on a website so people can see a sample? He could do different sizes for different prices. I can't afford it but if I had the money I would pay $30 for a drawing of my baby. I had the art teacher at school draw a pug for my daughter for Christmas but he drew it on manila paper and did a very quick job, so it wasn't "professional" BUT the picture was awesome even at that and my daughter loves it---with that in mind, your husband is using quality paper and other materials, he should definitely charge for it if he's going to sell it! Good luck!

Rose Drawings

Your husband is very very talented. I'm sorry that someone made you or him feel bad. The prices you are asking are very reasonable. Please don't let 1 bad experience make you stop what you are doing. Perhaps asking for a small deposit would be good, so your husband does not put all the effort into a drawing and then get nothing for it. Again in my humble opinion I think he is very talented. If I could get a good picture of my gang....for sure I would I have him draw them. Anyway.....great job !!!!

Your husband has been blessed to be so artistically talented. I thought both drawings were absolutely beautiful. I also felt that the price was reasonable as well. Right now it is not in my budget, but, over the summer as well as Molly looking more presentable and a good pic of her; I would love to have your husband draw a pic.

Pricing is the hardest part of selling your artwork. You can try different things to come up with a price, hourly rate, cost of supplies X a factor, going rate in galleries, etc.... but bottom line, you just have to find a price you are happy doing the work for and one that others will pay for it.

I can't say for sure what the sketch is worth. What details were agreed upon in the original offer? Size, medium, etc. Does it really look like the person's dog? It looks like it would fit in a 5X8 frame, judging by the pencil size. Right? Check to see what other 5X8 pencil sketches of one subject are going for. Wandering a few arts & crafts fairs would be a good place to start. That is the type work this is comparable to. Now, if he wants to get into fine art, galleries and fine art shows would be the place to compare. But I am thinking you might want to start with the art & craft fair venue. That will give a good idea of how to price.

Once I started selling for a certain price, I let the market guide me. If I was selling out quickly, I raised my prices next time out. If something did not move, I might lower it. Special orders were tougher. I would pick something comparable and then add a bit, maybe 20% depending on the price, unless it seemed particularly difficult, then I might add more.

Best of luck to you!
Thanks, the paper size is 11in by 8 1/2 in. if that helps judge the size. Drawings look better in a frame with matting so you have to leave room for that, When the matting is on, the picture part is 8 x 10. Here is the original picture for comparison.

$45 dollars is a fair price especially if it included shipping

but personally i am very critical and picky when it comes to drawings
i was raised by my grandparents whom are crazy artists/professors. they are the kind of artists you would call the traditional institutionalized kind and hates "deviant" art or artists (like dada artists).
i am a "failure" by their standards
so basically here's what they would say if those drawings came from me:
"the pencil one lacks contrast. there's no depth. its just floating on the paper. too many light parts with not enough darkness to contrast. the hairs are too stiff and lacks life. the eyes does not shine nor do they capture the observer's eyes. the coloured one feels a little lost. the jacket has nice contrast and colours with the correct shades but the hair has no contrast at all. theres such a lack of contrast on the dog's face that one would not be able to tell if the dog has a muzzle or not."

but if it was up to me to buy one of those two pictures i'd take the coloured one. its much easier to draw black and white - and a lot less work and planning, if theres a mistake the eraser will fix it but its a lot harder to fix coloured drawings. i love colour in general and i think doggie drawings should always be in colour. what other way can you reflect their colourful personality
No, no, no you do not come off that way. We really wanted honest opinions. Hubby has pretty much taught himself so believe me I probably am his biggest critic, like I know what Im talking about. LOL We appreciate your comments. Both of us work, so this is a hobby, I just know the more you do it, the more you improve. Re the eyes, he really does make the eyes shine and look at you, but it also depends on the photos hes working with. Thanks.

I think it's a wonderful pic. That's an awsome idea for gifts for my family members that have pets! The way I see there are 2 groups of people out there. The ones that want the hand made things and appreciate the time and talent that go into it and the ones who want it for cheap but don't understand what it takes to hand make something and just want it like it's been made on an assembly line in a factory. I've done a few craft shows with my mom. She paints. Depending how much time, money and the level of difficulty is how she determines the price on her paintings. I sew and it's the same way. I don't think 45 dollars was unreasonable at all. It's probably a steal if that includes framing and shipping! Don't undersell yourselves! The right buyer will come along and be happy to pay what your asking or more. Especially if it's a pic sketched of their own dog! Stick to your guns.

As a fellow artist - I recommend he post them at:

redbubble.com

There your art sells and they do all of the printing and shipping. FREE!!! Free to join - free to sell. I cant say enough good things about it. I made 17,000.00. alone there on my art work last year.

Very family oriented and friendly. Give it a shot!

xoxo
