| How to prevent separation anxiety? My little girl is about 18 wks old now. I'm home by myself most of the time and she's with me, of course. When I go out I take her with me when I can. Of course, right now the places I can take her are limited because it's WAY too hot for her to stay in the car even for a few minutes. Cool weather is coming and I'm going to want to take her more. But here is my concern. As it is she cries as soon as she realizes I'm leaving and when I get home she does the "Kukoo for Cocoa Puffs" routine with out of her mind joy. I don't know if she settles down and sleeps most of the time in the meantime. I hope so, though I notice that often the pad in the bottom of her crate is completely turned over, so she' active for a while at least. Would it be better for her in the long run to control my desire to take her along as the weather cools and force myself to leave her every second or third trip so that when hot weather comes again and I can't take her as often, she doesn't suffer more about being left alone? Or is some of this just puppiness? Will she eventually realize that I always come back and take my comings and goings in stride? Another concern I have about taking her is theft. My family had a much beloved poodle stolen from a car when I was about 14, so I really don't like having Susan in the car when I can't see it. What are the thoughts on all this? I'd like to see how other people feel about taking them a lot during the cool (not bitter cold) weather but having to leave them the rest of the time. I'm going to take her sometimes no matter what because I want her to like to go. We once had a shepherd who decided our free range chickens were his flock. We had to shove him in the car and slam the door as fast as we safely could to get him to go. And then he fretted the whole time about getting back to his chickens. Also what about concerns over parking lot theft of our babies? |
