"But she's so BIG!!!" (rude comment/confirmation/teapot file) 1 Attachment(s) I took Daisy to visit a friend in a hospice facility. Actually I take her about 4 times a week. She wants to go everywhere with me and they let me bring her in. This particular time 4 people said almost exactly the same thing: : What kind of dog is that?" And when I said, "But she's so BIG!!!!" Now I understand that this beloved dog is not a particularly good example of the Yorkshire Terrier. But she is almost seven months old and weighs a tad over 8 pounds. She is kind of long (we accuse her of a wiener dog great grandpa) and her ears are big but come on! She is clearly recognizable as a Yorkie and, so far anyway, just a pound over the breed standard!!! Are tiny Yorkies so common that an eight pound dog would make a person say " That looks like a Yorkie, but it is way too big" !! Just a little venting. I don't like nobody to dis my baby! Picture of of her sweet face with a dirty nose yesterday resting after a fun time outside. Beth and Daisy |
she is adorable! people can be rude. My charlie is a teapot too. He has a long body and legs. People are amazed at how big he is. "oh he is big for a yorkie but has nice soft fur" |
I've heard of yorkies reaching 20 pounds and more. Its just more yorkie to love and more love to receive. Who cares what they say...its your 'child' and thats all that matters. People who says things like that just are ignorant to the breed. Your baby is adorable..inside and out!! Love that face. She resembles my Angel who is over 8 pounds of love. |
Your Daisy is beautiful and precious. Just ignore it and laugh, people just say what they want and all we can do is look on and laugh it off. To me ANY dog under 20lbs is small, I don't know when that changed for anyone else:rolleyes: |
I think she's beautiful!!! and i LOVE her ears. I have the same hair clips for Bria!! |
She's GORGEOUS! |
I guess I've never gotten the "he's so big" comment. Bogie is 10 lbs and long, but he looks all yorkie. I guess some people just have their thoughts of the breed to be a tiny purse dog. Too bad for them I guess, we get every lovable pound of love from our babies! |
Your yorkie is so cute. People just don't know what the standard is. Frankly the standard is just that a standard. If your yorkie is 8 pounds, just more to love!! My friend shows yorkies and one of her dogs is large. She loves him to death. He can't go in the ring, but he is loved just like all the others. He is from the same blood lines. Sometimes they just get big. |
She is soooooo cute!!!!! I guess when someone says something like that, the comeback might be "All the more to love!":D |

My yorkie is just under 10 pounds and I'm always told the same thing, "he's way too big!" I even had a teenager tell me once, "We have a dog like yours, but ours is the proper size, he's 2lbs." 2lbs!! I went on to explain to her how dogs are inbred to create such tiny things and how unhealthy it is for the dog when they can barely lift their head because their muscles aren't strong enough and how they live half as long as "regular" dogs because of this. Finally, I think you're dog is a fantastic example of a Yorkie! I'd hate to hear any owner say their dog, full breed or mutt, about their dog! They are what they are, they don't judge us. My dog is as dumb as a box of rocks, but he's a loving, gentle sweetie and doesn't judge me for being tired after work or lazy. I try to educate people that say my dog is "too large". Most are receptive to it, a few are simply to naive to change their minds. But I do what I can! Thanks for listening! |
I think you have every reason to be frustrated! I was frustrated just like you yesterday. I was walking my two babies and a lady was like "what kind of dogs are those?" I was like "yorkies"... then she goes, "oh I have a yorkie at home but she is a LOT smaller than yours, are yours mixed?" Um... lady, Max is only SIX pounds! I could see where someone could make a comment about Molly cause she is overweight right now but Max?! Right.... Grrr, don't mess with my babies! |
I think reaction like that just some sort of people complexes, sorry. Your baby is very cute:thumbup:, so what if they tell "she is big". What's wrong to hear the simple fact? If yorkie standard up to 7, and someone' dog is 10 or more, it is normal reaction to say "she/he is big" . It doesn't make the dog less beautiful or worse!!!. Did they tell "she is ugly" ? ;) I am sure they didn't:rolleyes: :D. I can easily discuss about quality of my baby. She is super cute, I often receive compliments that she is one of the cutest yorkies they have ever seen, but every time when people ask me "is she a show quality?" or even "are you going to breed her", I without any problems explain them what good quality yorkies is and why my dog is not show quality. And WHY dogs like mine should NOT be breeding - because according standard she is not show or even breeding class. I explain that she doesn't have perfect silky coat, but wooly, her body is disproportional a little bit (long body comparable small head, short "bulldog" front legs), and she has luxating patella and it is genetic. What's wrong with that? I want people know about details like that because some of them way too uneducated, but want to breed their puppy mill dog "they bought in pet store" (I spoke with those people:eek:) I still love my baby:p, no matter how perfect she is. She still my best dog ever:thumbup::cool:. I wouldn't make a big deal from comments like that. Be easier:) |
I really don't understand how someone can look at a 8 pound dog and say she's too big  I also wonder where is this new Yorkie standard that people are going by? Just 3 weeks ago, I took my new puppy to the vet and the vet tech was gushing over him and said "He is so cute but he is going to be big. He is already such a big boy!" He was 2.7 lbs at 14 weeks, charting to be 4.5 lbs although I'm hoping he'll be at least 5-7 lbs since his parents were 5 and 7 pounds. I was like  If this was a "big boy", I wonder what her "small" was.... |
I'm really confused why people are insulted by that comment  I mean, if they said "He's so ugly" or "he's so fat" or "He's so dumb", then I would understand. I don't know how big Tobie is going to be but if he grows into a big boy and someone points out that he's bigger than most Yorkies, I would say, "Yep, and I love him that way!". I wouldn't be offended at all. Just because they say he/she is big, doesn't mean they don't think they are cute. Now, if they said it with a sour look on their face, then I would understand that also. |

I have learned just to shrug off those "ignorant remarks strangers make . Really they don't know what they are talking about. your yorkie is adorable, and that is what matters. I'd say "screw you" ... But, that's me, not real nice am I! they probably wouldn't bother even trying it with me.... I have too many tattoos.. Seriously, that stuff is just what people say when they are jealous of what others have. :aimeeyork |

dont listen to the bs, I get the same with chester because he is 9 lbs, and prsonally I would rather have him at 9 than at 4, just for safety and health concerns, they are all lovable and they are out babies, so just ignore them. People are different so are dogs |
I have to guiltily raise my hand and say....before I got my first yorikie and found this wonderful site that I was one of those hated people:eek:. Fact is untill I did research on yorkies when getting ready to buy mine I assumed that they were like poodles with the teacup minis and standards. I dont think most people are trying to be rude it is what our brains have been made to believe. Now we get just the opposite constantly being asked the teacup thing and having to explain. Yesterday as we walked Laddy down in Branson a man came up and said...You know you could of got a full size dog for the same price . I just looked him in the face and said yes but never a more full size heart than our little man has.;) |
The comment I always get is that Gucci's color are those of a Silkie and not a Yorkie. I'd say nope, he's a Yorkie. You sure? Well I can give you his mother's number if you'd like to verify...I get an empty stare. LOL. Someone actually asked me once (no I actually have gotten this comment more than once), if I dyed his hair! I was like what the hell for? Hahahahaha. It doesn't bother me but I can't help but think how dumb can you be....*shaking head* |
You could come back and say. Yes she is bigger, just like people some are bigger then others, and if you are lucky the person that said that is fat :D |

Well now that I have Mika (9lbs or more), and next to her Maya (3), I get asked all the time, pointing at Mika..what is THAT one? Then there is ...is the little one a teacup. Roll eyes. |
1 Attachment(s) I'm sorry that this happened to you. Pepper is around 13 lbs at 1 yr and 5 months old. Don't worry about it she is beautiful. There is just more to love and they don't have a lot of problems that the tiny ones do. Attachment 270068 Around here we say that Pepper got her great-great-great-great grandfathers rottweiler gene.:D Here is a picture of Pepper with a paperback book for a size refrence. |
So rude. Don't worry about it. Put a big smile in your face and answer. Yes she is THANKS. I LOVE THE FACT THAT SHE IS THIS SIZE TOO!! And keep on going... |

Much better that unhealthy runt less that 3 pounds;). |
She is beautiful! Love that cute Yorkie face. My KK is on a diet right now because she is supposed to be 6lb and we left her with my neighbor while we went for an extended trip. They spoil her rotten and when I got home she was almost 8lb!! LOL But my daugter has a full blooded Yorkie and she is bigger at about 8-9lb and so were her parents. So don't let anyone dis your baby. She is just fine however she is!!! KK's Mom |

Luckily I've never had anyone say anything negative about Twinkle's size (she's 8lb) but I do think it's a rude thing to comment on. I know my furbaby isn't a great example of a yorkie, standard-wise, but that doesn't make her any less a yorkie. I think your Daisy is beautiful - just as she is :) xxx |
I don't blame you for being offended. These are our babies. You get defensive just as you do with your human baby's. It is natural for Mama Bear to come out, claws and all! |
1 Attachment(s) That is a very rude thing to say, IMO. I took Chloe to a baseball game the other day, and had someone say "She is ugly." I was like wth? You dont say that about someones baby. There were people standing with us, and were like, she is one of the prettiest yorkies I have ever seen. I was sooo mad, I felt like smacking that guy right in the face. I said, would you walk up to a mother, and say that her child is ugly, because that exactly what you just did. Then he kinda walked off and didnt have anything else to say. She isnt ugly is she? Haha. |
