Introducing a lab mix puppy to my Yorkie I would like some guidance about introducing an 8 week old Labradoodle (1/2 lab, 1/2 poodle) to my 11 year old yorkie female, Zuzi. We plan on introducing the two off site at a friend's house next week when we get our new puppy. Zuzi doesn't have any real experience with a puppy friend so I was wondering if anyone here has had this experience with their Yorkie being the older animal and introducing a larger breed puppy. How did it go? Do you have any tips? Thanks, Shelley

Hi Shelley, I was just dogsitting my friend's pitbull over the weekend I think the main thing is what you are doing, introducing them at a "neutral" territory. Be sure to praise Zuzi a lot when she show's a positive interest for the puppy. I don;t think dogs understand size...at least not yorkies (or not MY yorkie...hahaha) They are extremely jealous of their humans so make sure you give her extra loving so she doesn;t feel threatened by the new puppy...

You're right, they don't know their size! Zuzi is 10 pounds but thinks she's big and tough. A bit bossy with some dogs especially those BIGGER than her! She used to have a Chow friend across the street and she'd run over to say hi and she'd be real submissive and roll on her back. Then they got another chow. Zuzi went over and did the same thing to her and the rotton Chow picked her up like a little rag doll and mauled her. Thank goodness the owner was there and quickly told his dog to "Drop it". Zuzi ran away but she was seriously injured with neck wounds and some minor bites on the insides of her back legs. It took weeks for her to recover. That was about 5 years ago and she's fine, no lingering problems. Since that time we've been careful about keeping her away from large dogs. I'm more afraid for her than she is for herself. She's fine and it doesn't seem to have effected her too much. I think it bothers my husband and I more. Zuzi still thinks she's as big and tough as ever. Go figure.
