Question about the hairs in between eyes on bridge of nose

I'd like to know do you all cut this when trying to grow a top Knot? I was told that you should by a groomer and they did. I know the growing it out into the eyes is annoying and I use gel to keep it down but I wasn't sure and need to find a groomer in Northern VA that understands this process for Yorkies and/or Malteses.

Thanks for your help!

My next door neighbor has been grooming for years, she said once it's cut, you will have to continue having it cut, otherwise the hair will constantly be going in their eyes. I am doing my little girls hair in a top knot, and the groomer knows not to touch her hair there

If you want a nice topknot...you do not trim the hair on the bridge of the nose nor give them bangs. You can use hair gel to keep it out of their eyes until it grows long enough.

By 4 months a puppy's hair is long enough to stay out of their eyes.

Thanks all. I thought so...yet the new groomer I tried for Kikyo said it needed to be cut, thus starting the process over. It was growing out great. So now I'm looking for a new groomer that actually listens to me for a change. We have had Kikyo 9 months and she just turned 1 year yesterday...so the search begins. It seems as if I will have to make the journey some miles for a groomer that listens. Actually, I had one that did believe it or not it was PetSmart a not so busy location in Dale City. Only 2 girls work in this place and that is the only groomer that did what I asked and understood why I wanted it.

Grooming a Yorkie is quite easy, and it's safer and less expensive. You may want to try doing this yourself.;)

I so understand that frustration. First and only professional grooming Reggie had...I expicitly said 5 times...do not cut the hair on his head, I had PICTURES, she wrote it down. And when I went to pick him up....she'd cut him bangs and shaved his nose. I was beyond mad...and she knew it. She also lost my business...

Can someone recommend a good gel?

bchgirl 03-05-2009 01:18 PM

Petedge has topknot gel. I think petsmart may be carrying this product.

phfgkl 03-05-2009 01:31 PM

I really have used the kyjelly, as i was told it worked and it does. I used to use it for my little one when she was going through the "awkward" stage. It's also very inexpensive

Well, buy the generic then maybe he won't know. LOL It really does do a great job, and you'll have plenty left for on down the years. BTW, I know what dh is, but what one earth is FH?

I have yet to find a groomer that will listen to me. The last time I had them groomed, I said "do not cut the body hair, just do...." She called me AFTER cutting Mayzie's body and said "I couldn't remember what we discussed" AAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhh-They both got cut short. I am trying to grow it all out again and I have been trimming them up. Both of their bridges were cut :( I am going to try some of these ideas. Maybe it will help us get through the growing back phase.

Mo has very hairy feet (underneath) this is what I am nervous about cutting.

I have a fantastic groomer in my area. If anyone lives in SF and wants the info, please PM me. I went in with a really long list of requirements (no anal gland expression, no ear hair removal, don't cut the muzzle hair, and on and on), AND Thor took a really nasty dump RIGHT before we went in. AND he was freaking out and crying.

When I got him a few hours later, he came out this happy little dog with a great cut and untouched all the places I'd mentioned.

His muzzle hair is seriously in his eyes right now, but every week I see some of it gain enough weight to fall naturally into place.

What brand of bands does anyone recommend. I've tried the "no snarl" type but the mat her hair and hurt her when I have to remove them. She's got the hairs-in-the-eyes thing going but I'm trying to grow them out. Any suggestions?

I've been there. I told a groomer DO NOT cut his muzzle or top knot. She of course did, but did not do a sanitary cut, which was the main reason I had taken him in.

So after months of having to grow out his muzzle hair, I decided he needed an overall trim. I said DO NOT cut the muzzle hair or top knot, but please take off about an inch all over. Well, she left the top knot alone, but chopped him everywhere else. (see the pictures)

Well now that his hair has grown back in, I've decided to just do it all myself. I bought a small pair of clippers and have been doing the sanitize and tipping. I am very pleased with his look now and when the time comes for a trim, I'm going to have a go at it. Even if it doesn't look that great, I'm sure it will be better than any of the "professional" grooms he's had. Anyway, I agree with you, it's very hard to find a groomer that listens.

kwaymon 03-05-2009 05:00 PM

Oh but I never answered your question! LOL! I would say don't cut the muzzle hair. Let it grow out for a topknot. :D

I'd be saying all kind of non-Christian words! I was when they first cut Kikyo's face and let my husband have it. Se I can do everything minus cut her by myself. simply because she thinks I'm playing with her. I just don't get it. Or she does that strange gremlin noise and starts whining. Now, let someone else do it and she is just still.

I am having Bonnie groomed for the first time next week.
What should I make sure they do? And why no anal gland extraction or ear hair removal? Thanks

That's a good thing:D I have an extra box of it if you'd like to try it. Mine will be moldy by the time the first box gets completely used:D

Do you mean not to cut the hair by their eyes? I've taken Tila to the groomer and I never let them cut her hair on her head because I'm growing out her hair. But I did notice they cut her hair by her eyes, by the inside corners? When I was reading this my mouth dropped open and I was like no what did I do, what happened. If it's cut is it possible to grow it back? And the hair in the ears should that not be cut? I'm taking Tila to the groomer tomorrow, I'm all nervous now.

For a really nice topknot you do not want the hair trimmed on the bridge of the nose. It will grow back...and drive you crazy for awhile. Ears should be tipped.

Here's an good example ....

Here's another example (not my dog, but a picture I LOVE!):

See how the top third of the ears have been "tipped" (shaved)? the other hair on the ears is left long, so it can hang down. Also the hair on the bridge of the nose is left long so it can either go up into the topknot or hang straight down the muzzle.

I totally understand every one of your's pain that had a groomer that cut the nose bridge/eye corner hairs. Bella had hers cut at her very first grooming, and there was LOTS and LOTS of tears (hers) for quite awhile while those hairs were growing out.....I felt so sorry for her....hair sticking in the eyes is NOT fun! :( But, she's just about to the point its not such an issue anymore, thank goodness. So good luck everyone!! Threaten your groomer if you have to :p, but dont let them touch those hairs!! Some groomers will even get more over-zealous than just trimming them, btw....I have seen some poor little Yorkies with nearly shaved muzzels .....makes them look like they have Chi face or something....just not right for a Yorkie, IMO!

Roxy 87 03-07-2009 09:38 PM

I took Tila to the groomer yesterday, told them not to cut her hair on her head and by the eyes and bridge of nose and do you know what they did? The buzzed her hair off the bridge of her nose and by her eyes! I didn't notice it right away until I was on my way home, because her hair was all freshly washed and flopped in her face, I flipped it up to check on the way home and I noticed what they did. I was soooooo mad!! I couldn't call because they were closed already and they're closed today. I wonder if I should call on Monday and say something. Irk, it's gonna take forever to grow it back, I could just cry.

I personally ask the groomer not to express the anal glands because I don't think Thor needs it and I figure if he doesn't need something up his butt, I'll spare him the experience.

As for the ears: I was told by my vet that some people believe that plucking ear hair is hygenic and can prevent infection; and that other people believe that plucking the ear hair opens up tiny wounds that can get infected. My vet is on this "don't pluck ear hair" side, so I go with their advice. I'm sure many people do the exact opposite.

A sanitary cut is really nice, especially for boys; they should trim the nails, maybe clean the ears; and of course, make your dog look hot. :)

;)Being a retired Cosmetologist I decided I would just try to groom Laddy myself. He got his first small trim the other day I will try to post pics soon for you to see but my main reason was I didnt trust groomers after all I have read on here. Just wanted to say thanks for all the advise u all give about grooming on here

May be worse grooming of the face my yorkie has had yet!

When I went to a groomer yesterday, who use to groom my previous yorkie and I really liked, I verbalized to her and gave her the "Petey Haircut Instructions" sheet which I had made up after a previous grooming experience where I had asked the groomer not to cut the topknot, which she cut into that visor thing anyway, which then basically sticks straight out of his forehead and hangs in his eyes within a week of being groomed. I had almost gotten his topknot all grown out and back to normal after dealing with his horrible hair and not much you can do with it for the past 3 months. His hair stays so much better when it is able to all be pulled up into the topknot instead of hairs going every which way.

Anyway, I was shocked when I picked Petey up from the groomer yesterday and saw how he was groomed. His bangs were cut AGAIN and now also in between his eyes on the bridge of his nose was cut!!!

I tried to stay calm. When I asked her why she did that, she said she had misread the instructions and that she only cut the bangs "just a little bit"! When I asked her why she cut between the eyes, she said she cut there because the hair was poking him in the eyes. Well it is nothing like what is going to be poking him now when they are growing out!

His body, ears, legs and everything else was fine. The instructions for his face were as follows, along with a picture of how he should look. Plus I told her in addition to the instruction sheet.

FACE – Please DO NOT cut around the eyes. Leave topknot, but trim topknot shorter. Cut face short on sides.

Does it really seem that confusing?

The one picture is how he is suppose to look and how he looked before he got groomed with his topknot almost back to normal. The 2nd two pictures are how he looked after coming home from the groomer yesterday. His face is butchered! So mad!!!!
