Does anyone else get really annoyed by this??
 

Kingston is a standard size yorkie, i.e. ~7 pounds. Most people seem to (sadly, in my opinion) think that yorkies are supposed to be no more than 3-4 pounds.

This last week I was sitting in the vet's office (he got snipped snipped lol) and talking to this woman who was there waiting for her two little yorkies to come out. When Kingston came bolting out the door she exclaimed loudly "Oh my, you got a really big yorkie!" Her's came out shortly thereafter and I noticed her yorkies were the "teacup" size (don't even get me started on teacup size yorkies lol).

I said nicely, "No, he's the standard size. Have a good day!"

Grr. Ok so this turned into a rant... anyways. Does it bother anyone else to have your "big" yorkie looked at funny? When did the runt of the litters, I mean, "teacup yorkies" become the norm and standard size yorkies became worthy of a raised eyebrow?

Disclaimer: Not trying to put anyone down who has a "teacup" yorkie. My issue is just being told that my "standard" yorkie is "big" :p

I think it has become a huge problem with people wanting tinier and tinier.I have 5 and my largest 2 are 41/2 lbs,but when people see them they always say how cute they are but they want one smaller:eek:.Its so hard to know what size a pup will end up and I feel sorry for those because they will no doubt be the ones responsible for more animals in shelters unwanted.When I looked for a yorkie for the first time I looked for a YORKIE! and then the standard colors,of course healthy first but that was it.I do have a smaller one but who knows with them, some stop and some keep growing.I love them all but I do like variety and my next will be at standard or over.(big! at 7lbs and even 20lbs by no means is that a big dog)


Ok I am done.I think you have a perfectly sized yorkie.
I think a persons personal opinion is no excuse to be rude.

i here the same thing as we have all sizes from 7lbs to 2.10 lbs and and everyone always says how come hes so big .or wow you feed him way to much lol

My Bailey is 6.2 lbs - and I hear it all - "she's so big", "she's so small" LOL

Ask me what I think? ... "She's just right" :)

I LOVE THIS POST.....because I hear the SAME thing all of the time.

My Oldest yorkie Sassy is 8 Lbs. & of course, I wouldnt have her ANY other way.
But I am constantly asked, "Why does she Look the way she does? She doesnt Look like a NORMAL yorkie."
I get my feelings hurt :( Because my younger yorkie Lola, is 4 Lbs. & tends to get more attention just because of her Size.

I agree--I Love Sassy the size she is, more to cuddle, & MORE to Love :)

I think Yours sounds like the perfect Size & NO MATTER THE SIZE--
THEY ARE JUST AS BEAUTIFUL!!!!

seems if ur yorkie is over 3 pounds he is big...so i always tell them he is a show dog...lol...***The Star of Our Show*** .....LOL...

Callies 13 to 14 pounds and people ask if she full yorkie all the time and I love her being bigger I dont worry so much about her jumping on and off the sofa. Once I went into a pet store without Callie just to check it out and the lady asked what kinda of dog I had and I said I bigger yorkie (I was buying clothing in a medium) and she goes oh I have seen some fat yorkies before, I almost said let me go home get her and bring her back with me she is deffinitly not fat even the vet says shes perfect I was sooooo mad just because there bigger dosent mean there fat.

she is just not educated about yorkies.
a lot of people aren't and they make stupid statements.

Jewels is 6 1/2 lbs and I dont care who thinks shes big. Shes just the right size to me. I alwats wanted a little one but I dont anymore. I think 5 -7 lbs is the perfect size

Precious is 8 lbs in the winter & 7 lbs in the summer probably due to the fact she does nothing but race around the back yard every day in the nice weather! LOL But do you all know there is something called a micro yorkie!!!:eek: It is small enough to put in your pocket & really is the size of a rat!!!! Can you imagine the health issues??????????? The people breeding these munchin dogs really ought to be shot!

I hear it all the time! Lucy weighs 13 lbs (she's my chunky butt!) and is just beautiful. Her body shape and personality are wonderful. Rebel weighs 6 lbs, and when I have them out together, people think he's her pup:p

I got both of them because I LOVE yorkies - I never intended to breed, so size didn't matter to me. I hate it when people assume that Lucy isn't full blooded - I think it hurts her feelings when Reb gets lots of attention. She always has this hopeful look on her face and when someone's petting Rebel and ignoring her, I pick her up and love on her like crazy! She's my angel baby!

My Ziggy is 15 pounds. Had he been 7 pounds or less he would not have survived his recent illness/surgery since he didn't eat for almost 10 days.

I get the same questions from people wondering if he is a mix because he is so big.

I was in Petsmart and I had Ginger with me. She is 13 weeks old and 3.12 pounds. She will be a large yorkie, yes, I know. Well, there was this woman with a yorkie that looked quite scraggly to me. Probably about 5 pounds. It's coat wasn't pretty at all and it surely needed some grooming. The lady of course came over to me and said "That's a yorkie? It's not full blooded, right?" The tone of her voice was infuriating. I just turned and walked away. She was rude and so was I with no reply. Then I hear my husband say ..."Yea, she's full blooded." Why are these people so rude? I didn't tell her that her dog was ugly now did I or that she needed to give it a bath/haircut? Am I completely crazy? Does Ginger not look full blooded to you guys?

I don't know why the # on the scale makes such a statement as to being "big" or "tiny". My first Yorkie, Ivy Lucille aka Lucy (RIP) weighed in at 13 pounds. her features were big and she was solid. She seemed big but it was how she was and I never gave it a thought. I loved her! I now have Mayzie who was just weighed the other day and is at her highest at 8.2 pounds however, she is very petite but long. She is 3 yos. Her features are dainty and doesn't seem "big" to me. Mo is 5.4 and to me he is tiny and I would in no way want him any smaller. He is cobby and is almost 6yos. To me they are both perfect but when strangers or friends (some) see them together, Mayzie gets slighted it seems in the attention department because she is viewed as HUGE! Ugh, it is very frustrating.

Have you guys seen the Yorkies that show. I dont think I have ever seen a tiny one. Most are 5 to 7 lbs. I think they have to be that size inorder to show. Not sure but it seems that way....I like my Yorkies HARDY....

My first Yorkie, male, was 14 lbs. Piper (female) is a little over 5 lbs. Yet Chipper was the same size height that Piper is. Chipper had short legs, thick muscular body and the cutest Teddy bear face, and wasn't fat just thick chested. Piper has long legs, she's small boned and very slender and also has a cute Teddy bear face. To me both dogs seem small.

I have the same problem when we go out. Millie is 8 pounds.

We went to the local pet store and a woman commented on how big she was. Really? 7-10 pounds is the standard for her size. I think 'teacups' are adorable but I'd be scared I'd hurt one.

My groomer was shocked at her size and she specializes in yorkies. It wasn't that she was big but that someone finally got a standard sized dog. She asked me the breeders number cause she'd been looking for a larger yorkie. She said all she'd been getting for the longest time were 'teacups' and she'd had a few people ask if she knew anyone who was breeding the larger size. She wanted to know when the standard had suddenly become the 'larger' sized? Like someone wanted to supersize their order.

It is annoying. Chip is 6.5 lbs and Smokey is 13 lbs sometimes I hear it even with Chip! I feel bad though because Chip doesn't really want strangers around him, but people are always commenting on how cute he is because he's small and looks like a yorkie. Chip hides behind me, but Smokey who is large would get completely ignored if it wasn't for him being so outgoing and it's only because he's "large" and doesn't look like a purebred yorkie to those that don't know the yorkie breed. I think both of my babies are beautiful!

Don't feel bad, we've had members with full grown 3-pound Yorkies, who were told the same thing. Joey's around 5 1/2 pounds, and I was shopping with him when a lady came over to me, and remarked about how big he was. She informed me that she just got a brand new 10-week-old "teacup" yorkie who was 3 pounds. :D Sometimes, I think people are just excited about their dogs and say stupid things.

Yea and that 3 lb "teacup" is probably going to be about 5-6 lbs too. :D Chip was almost about 2.6 lbs at 8 weeks, so he was probably 3 lbs at 10 weeks and now he's 6.5. People!! :rolleyes:

O my goodness...does it get on my nerves? YES! Tobie weights 5 lb something...and when people ask how much he weights and I tell them, they are just like he is BIG and then think he is not cute anymore! It is so annoying! I don't care how much he weights as along as he is healthy and happy! I went home this weekend to see my family and my cousin got a yorkie/pomeranian and the thing doesn't even weight a pound, Tobie looked huge compared to that thing. It is really sad how small it is, it is cute but you have to be so careful where you step. And I know how you feel about "teacups".

Yes, Yes, Yes!! I've only had Barley for three weeks. The first week we did nothing but go to the vet's. Due to his kennel cough I didn't want him out and infecting others. But the last two weekends we went to the three local chain pet stores that are around here.

I had people saying he was so big and I went into mommy protector mode. I tell them, "Well being that he was skin and bones at 6 lbs when I rescued him a few weeks ago. I'm ecstatic that he is up to 8.8 lbs and is now healthy." This shuts their mouths and gets them saying things like, "Oh, bless his heart. Or really but he looks healthy now."

I have people asking if Mischa was a teacup (7lb poodle own's very short). I would explain that a "teacup" is not actually an AKC size standard and added that the size standard is toy.

One lady and her husband had a teeny poodle puppy and said they breed teacups. I assume because we were in line and tons of people were around she had to be snotty. So, I told her if she looked at the AKC standards it's not a size, and it's just a way for her to charge people more for her puppies. I then asked, are you showing your dogs or have you tested them for genetic problems before breeding. She said my vet says they are health. I wasn't trying to cause a scene so I paid for my stuff and left at this point. Some people are so nieve!

I try to look at these outings as educational opportunities for the people I encounter so I try not to be too mean, but it is maddening!! Glad to know I'm not the only one who's offended by this.

this is true,my yorkie is 3.2 at 5 1/2 months so i think she will be on the smaller side(i consider 4 1/2-5 pounds pretty small lol) but i certainly would not mind if she were a bit larger...i understand how frustrating the whole weight thing is,I am 19 5'7 and 100 pounds,no im not anorexic and i get picked for eating sooo much its just my metabolism,iv always been this way and the comments definately hurt,im sure its annoying when it comes to your furbabies too!

I get that all the time since Pao is 10lbs and most Yorkies here are about 5 pounds if not smaller. I don't really mind if they say it nicely as in if they say that is the biggest Yorkie they have seen so far..that is fine with me. It is just a statement and ya my Yorkie is bigger than most here and I know we love him solid so doesn't matter what others say. The ones I can't stand are the rude ones. There was a young lady who said very loudly to her friend, "This Yorkie puppy is just too big. If I get one, I wouldn't choose one like that, just too big and ugly". Now, that is way rude and the way she said it was rude. I didn't say anything but I should have turned around and told her off. Pao wasn't even 10lbs back then when she said that, he was still a pup and was still growing.

there are people out there are just being negative regardless what you have. we have a smaller girl who is two and a half pounds at three years old. one day we were checking out at petsmart and a lady with a two pound 8-week-old yorkie pup was referring to my girl as "one of the large pups"(my girl is kept in long coat and does not look like a puppy). I try to give them a benefit of doubt, maybe they are just uneducated about the breed:rolleyes:

I've gotten a few comments about Jackson. When I first took him to the vet at 12 weeks, everybody was like "Oh my! Big yorkie!" and then they weighed him and he was 6 pounds at 12 weeks, but he still seemed SO tiny to me. I honestly can't imagine having a smaller dog. He's now about 9 pounds at almost 5 months old and I love every ounce of him! He's still small to me *shrugs*

"uneducated about the breed" is exactly right!

We ran in to a Mom with a teenage daughter in a furniture store. The girl was ranting and raving over Ginger so her and her Mom came over. The Mom said "Yeah, she be cute but I'm gonna get me a teacup." Well, from general vocabulary and her presentation, I could tell she wasn't educated - she was jealous! I just said "Oh, that's nice" and went my merry way. Good luck with that one! Ginger is 3.12 pounds. That's really small. What do they expect these puppies to look like....rodents?

I haven't had this problem because I guess mine is small (3.5-4lbs) but I can understand how some people would get upset, I would too. I have never said this to anyone who has a larger yorkie then me, I love YORKIES it doesn't matter how much they weigh to me. Personally I wouldnt mind if mine was 7 lbs, I probably wouldn't have to worry as much as I have to now.
