I definitely do not understand people's emphasize on size anymore. Gone are the days when people think that 15-20 lbs dogs are small dogs. When I see a 15-20lbs dog, I still think that they are small. At the end of the day, I think it really doesn't matter what others say so long we know we love our own Yorkies and take care of them well unless they are being really rude then they really deserve people telling them off.

Duke is 6 lbs and he's 16 months. I was so happy when the vet told me he's 6 lbs. As long as our little ones are healthy, their size should not matter. I would love for Duke to get bigger if he can but I'm happy with the way he is.
I've seen smaller yorkies and Duke would be "big" to them too.
I just wish that those interested in teacup and now micro size yorkies understand the breed and its health risks before getting one or critizing others.

Minnie is 9 lbs @ 6 months, i can't tell you how many times i hear aww what a cutie; boy she sure is big for a yorkie!" Here is a pic of my baby recuperating with her Daddy after her surgery(spay). She may not be a tiny, but i don't think she is all that big do you?;)

i really do think a lot of people don't know anything about the breed & that most people often see celebrities with their "teacup - so small i'll carry it in my purse" yorkie, which is really aggrivating.

i actually get a different response when i bring riley with me places. he's 4 pounds and people say "oh my gosh he's so small shouldn't he be bigger? how old is he? he's still a puppy right?" even my dad was joking around with me and said that he's malnourished lol. it shouldn't matter anyway, people make size a big deal because they dont know any better and it is annoying. size should definitely not be a determining factor whether its a purebred yorkie or not!

YT should make a documentary about yorkies and give it to animal planet or oprah...

That sucks!! People are sooooo lame:rolleyes: People like us think yorkies are cute no matter how much they weight, but then we have those in breed of people that think they have to have a "2" lb yorkie because thats what the "breed standard is" (and its not) blah to them!! All of the yorkies on here are the cutest yorkies I have ever seen!!!! The 2lbers to the 14lbers!!!! :D Dont let "those" people get to you!! Just shrug them off. Peanut is about 4lbs he goes up and down between 3-4.5 And this one lady thought he was big!! She asked if he was full yorkie!! Hahaha oh man :rolleyes: You and we all know your furbabies are cute!!!:p

Geesh, I guess everyone has a different opinion on this because in my books 7 lbs is TEENSY TINY. My 19 lb pug dog seems small to me too. I think anything under 20 lbs is pretty little.

I am beginning to think people don't have a clue any more...Either that or they just don't think..

I have three....7 lbs, 5.6 lbs and 2 lbs(5 1/2 months and growing).....Whenever I would take two of them out somewhere- someone would always say Wow Look at that huge one..LOL..Doesn't matter which two they are....

I get so tired of it, I have started taking them one at a time....

Today, someone walked by my desk and saw my pics on my wall.....They were like....Man, If I had a yorkie- I would have gotten a teacup....I think Good thing you don't have one...:rolleyes:

only in my opinion *** i have never seen a 2 pound or 3 pound yorkie win at the shows ? so how do they think that is standard size for the breed ?:animal-pa

Standard is 7 pounds and below, you won't see tinies at the shows because most breeders don't want to a breed really small girl, and show dogs will be breeding dogs generally. Also larger dogs show better.

so therefore we should tell those concerned about the size of a yorkie ..that is larger than a 2 or 3 pound or smaller yorkies) they should go to see the yorkshires at the show before they comment and they can see what they are really supposed to look like :)

I recently had that comment too. My huge, enormous, giant 7lb yorkie was getting comapared to a little itty boy who was neglected :( That Yorkie could not have been more then a few lbs! The girls ask me is she a "teacup" OOOhh gosh the dreaded "teacup" word. I tell them No she is a regular Yorkie!
Intersting enough the little guy, was so neglected it made me want to cry.

My dog is 11.5lbs...

I work as a nurse at a vet hospital, and it has always really bothered me how often I get people in the exam room who get belligerent about their OWN dog's size-- ranting after I weigh their puppy in about how they had paid however many thousands of dollars on a website to get a teacup dog and now she is HOW many pounds, rant rant rant, threatens to send the dog back, etc. etc....

I always say something to the effect that they should be happy that their dog is doing to be big enough to be a DOG, and that she'll be happier that way.

I find it very disheartening how tiny, often sickly dogs have become a status symbol for some people. If the pup is healthy, I don't see why anybody should really care WHAT it weighs unless it is a show dog aiming for perfect breed standard.

I get that same crap all the time.....my own sister saw my Bryan for the first time and she says.....he looks like he's mixed with something....I said no he's a full AKC registered Yorkshire Terrier....and her dumb _ss kept on insisting that he must me mixed because he couldn't fit into the back pocket of my jeans:D He's 10+ lbs and is cute as all get out.....I wanted a small yorkie, but now i'm glad he's bigger....when we go to the park he stomps with the big dogs and I don't have to worry about him getting stepped on and crushed....he can jump on the sofa without breaking a leg...and he just perfect to me....so don't worry about what other people say...I love them all!!!!

LOVE THIS THREAD!! So good to hear from people with "large" yorkies! I get it too, Lexilyn is 6lbs. We were at PSmart and a lady came over and said "oh she's so cute!" Out walked a 3 lb boy and stole the show. The same lady turned back to me and said "oh, yours must be a mixed breed?" We were left in the dust. Gotta luv the ignorance!

its ok when they make rude comments on the "huge" size of my yogurt but it takes a whole new low for this lady i met the other day.

she kept on insisting that my yogurt wasnt a yorkie! i was so annoyed and angry at her! i told her he is a yorkie full blooded yorkie and yorkies used to be 30 lbs back in their rat hunting days.
she then goes onto saying "i dont think he is yorkie. he looks mixed, like a silky terrier or an australian terrier. you know those big terriers."
i was sooo angry at that point and said the same rude thing back at her "well you seem like you are 7 ft tall and weighs over 200 lbs, are you an ogre then?" (she was a really tall lady) i dont make personal attacks like this but its the only way she will ever understand how yogurt would feel.
i said have a nice day and walked away. she stood there all shocked.
i really wish they would think twice before saying those things and realize its so hurtful to us.

I LOVE this thread!! We get the same thing whenever we are out. I have had people tell me Mazee is a bigger yorkie, and I am like seriously?? Mazee weighs less than 6 pounds! I think it is insane and will usually tell anyone that makes a comment on her being a "bigger" dog, LOL. I mean h*** my purse weighs more than her!! haha!! I have one friend in particular. She was bound and determined to get a "tiny" yorkie. I kept telling her that you have to be really careful with a tiny one. She bought one and was told she was only going to weigh 3 lbs. Her dog weighs over 6lbs now and my friend thinks she is huge-she now has another pup that is 3 months old and weighs 2 lbs, she thinks she is going to be tiny, I think she will be about 6 or so pounds. I keep telling her that under 7lbs is standard, but a lot of people don't really care about that, all they care about is what "looks" cute! I think it gets tiring to try to educate all the time about yorkies-sometimes I just agree with them, yep, Mazee, she is huge, a total cow!! LOL sarcasm really ticks people off at times..LOL :rolleyes:

That's happened to me with Smokey because he's so big (13 lbs), extremely light colored, and has floppy ears. Of course, he was a rescue, so I never know but I was told that he is a purebred.

I find it rather annoying that Yorkie's are being bred so small these days. I'm finally financially able to support one, and yet the only ones I can find in my area are 4 pounds and under. I was at LEAST 5 pounds, more if I can get it. I love Yorkie's for what they are, not because they are "purse" dogs! I love their attitude, and I think they are just adorable, whether they are 2 pounds or 20. I just don't want a 2 pound dog underfoot. Too fragile for me, thanks.

I love my Bryan's size...those tiny yorkies sometime have those big bulging eyes that look crazy

Twinkle is 8lb and thankfully I've not had any rude comments about her size....in fact most people say how 'tiny' she is. I can imagine it must be really hurtful when people say things though - it's like someone insulting your kid! Also, I bet those with really little yorkies get fed up with being told their dog looks like a 'rat' all the time. Unfortunately it seems that whether your yorkie is bigger or smaller there'll always be some idiot with something negative to say.

I agree. It all depends on what that person perceives as the "right size" I think they are all the right size. You love them no matter what size they are.

Your avatar pic caught my eye. Tucker has had 3 of those toys that your dog has in that pic. It is his favorite.

Is there' actually a subcatagory of 'teacup'? I've heard there is no such thing just specialized breeding or 'runt' status.

The reason I mention it is because this morning someone asked why I didn't get a Paris Hilton Dog. Cause i didn't want one? Cause I'm afraid I'd break it? All kinds of reasons. I wanted a 'real' Yorkie. Not a celebrities version of what 'real is. Nothing wrong with it if that's what you want but that isn't what I was looking for.

And I'm kinda tired of people trying to make me feel bad about it.

My Nadia is the smaller size and I get sooo annoyed when everyone asks if she is a teacup. I tell them that actually yorkie standards are anything under 7 lbs. They usually will just look at whoever they are with like yeah right...no one ever gets it!!

PS My parents are scared to death that they are going to break her and she is a bit over 3 1/2 lbs! They don't like the little ones!!

every time people say that our Nini is " so big". When we first adopted her, she was so tiny and chunky, everyone would give us compliments every where we went. As she grew, those compliments turn into those "so big Yorkie" comments!
We were told by the woman who sold her to us that she would be 5-7 lbs; no more. Nini is almost 10lbs; and I'm glad. With her stomach problems and the spaying last week, I don't think she would have done as well as she has had she been a "tea cup." The tiny ones are sooo delicate (from what I hear), that I'd have had to be specially careful and how do you do that?
Nicky is 5lbs; and I worry about him A LOT. The vet and we agreed to do all his shots individually (no combos) and space them out so that we're on the safer side of negative reactions.
He's legs are so skinny that I even monitor his rough playing with Nini (I don't want him to brake anything), can you imagine me with a tiny "tea cup"? I would've been a mental patient by now :eek:
I've asked my husband to relax and let people think and say what ever. We love them like crazy and that's all that matters. Don't get him started on what he wants to do when people have opinions about how we treat our furry CHILDREN...

Poppy weighs 13-14 lbs and I never thought she was particularly big until I joined up here. Tiny yorkies are v.cute but equally I wouldn't have my Poppy any other way, she's a lovely cuddle and many people I meet say that it's nice to see such a sturdy frame. Saying that I have put her on a diet at the moment as she tends to pile on the pounds!
Its great to hear that there are some larger (or regular) size yorkies out there.

Buddy is 7lb and everyone around where I live cannot believe how small he is, 7lb is small and I think if he was any smaller I would loose him in the woods on a walk. It does not matter how small, tall or large they are, they are all cute little intellegent furbabies
