Dog Concerned

I have a backyard neighbor who keep their Yorkie outside in a kennel 22/7 most of the time and 24/7 when they are out of town on the weekends. The kennel is large with food and water, but the little dog is penned up outside and alone most of the time, even in the cold (37 deg). I'm concerned.

Does anyone have information addressing this issue, so I can give to my neighbor?

I'm bumping this so others can respond as I know they will want to. If it was me, I'd call a rescue or shelter and explain the problem. Just make sure that they aren't going to euthanize the dog. I'm not sure how old he is, but this can be a serious concern with older, "unadoptable" dogs. Can you take him? Do you know this neighbor? Can you ask them if they would be willing to sell/give you the dog? Poor little thing....

If all else fails, call the police. It's inhumane to leave him out there all day, especially if the temperature is dropping to 37F.

Default Poor Baby

If they don't want that baby to be part of the family then they don't deserve it. I would call the human society.

I agree w/everyone and actually got into a huge verbal fight with my neighbor over them leaving their dalmatian out 24/7 no matter what temp.

I called our ASPCA (Animal control) they said they weren't able to do anything for him ( They had a pen for him to go into in the rain, food, water and all his shots & city tags. I was sooooo mad. The dog was very mean from their isolation of him that I couldn't take him, not that the witch would have given him to me. She hated me and still years later she will give me the evil eye when I see her. That poor dog died in his cage alone two falls ago. I'm grateful that God took him from his miserable life, but feel so bad for him. I hope to see him as a friendly and happy dog at the rainbow bridge. And I thank the Lord that they haven't gotten another dog since.

Bottom line to OP is don't be surprised if the ASPCA can't legally help you.

Maybe if you ask your neighbor if you can buy it they will take the money and you can make a difference in his life.

Angry

wow...this angers me sooooo much!

First of all, if they have a Yorkie, then they know, or should know, the maintenance that goes into having a Yorkie! They need affection and love! Any dog should not be treated like that!

My husband is an ACO and he suggests that you get ahold of ASPCA or HSUS immediately!

They will make it their personal business to find out what's going on and put an end to the animal cruelty taking place, and find it an awesome home! And you could even have the option to adopt it.

But please, make a phone call..........poor thing. Food and water is NOT enough.......that's so sad.

You have every right to be concerned. I'm concerned hearing about this too. You should give animal control a call. If you are on friendly terms with the neighbour, then maybe you could try talking to them first. Either way, please don't let this dog have the same fate as the dalmation that Gennies posted about above.

I hope someone can help this poor little pup. We had a backyard neighbor who left his bigger dog outside all the time no matter what the weather, and there was no dog house or place to take shelter from the weather. When I saw him sitting by the fence and it was sleeting on him I had enough and called the humane soc. I believe that someone talked to the owner because after that he was not outside when the weather was bad.

Unfortunately from what I have read on here, humane society and local animal enforcement people can do nothing if the dog has food, water and a little shelter. I don't know why but they have never differentiated between big dogs that can withstand the elements and fragile dogs like Yorkeis that certainly cannot.

So, you are going to have to try to approach it with education. I tried to do a quick search to find some sort of reference on line to print out and give your neighbor but did not have any luck. I think most of the sites think it is common sense that these precious little guys cannot be left outside all the time. Maybe someone else knows of a reference you could print off.

Even if you can't find it in writing maybe just your calm logic relating how Yorkies need to be inside dogs and need more attention than they are giving theirs. Stand by for resentment, but be firm. Maybe they really want to find another home for theirs, realizing they cannot provide what the little one needs. Maybe they just are not bright enough to realize how they are endangering their little dog.

If you are anything like me, you won't be able to rest until you at least try to help the Yorkie. But unfortunately, aside from breaking the law yourself and rescuing the dog, there may be little you can do. I once called child services on a lady who left a 3 year old alone at her home (The litle girl came to my door for a drink). They had an officer come right out but the lady showed up from her trip to the store for cigarettes and they said there was nothing they could do since she wasn't gone long enough for abandonment! That was years ago and maybe things are better now. But sometimes logic and the welfare of ones who cannot speak up for themselves does not win out.
