Was my puppy switched? Help me! I am a new mommy. My last Yorkie baby died unexpectedly while my husband and I were on vacation last year. We were devestated. We found a local breeder and I trusted her. I just can't believe that she would switch dogs on me. There were 3 females in the litter. I got first choice and I put a collar on my baby who was the smallest one weighing just a little over a pound at 7 weeks. I really want a smaller dog, 4 lbs would be perfect and all the charts showed that is where she would be. She had a sister who was much larger. I picked her up 6 days later and took her to the vet the next day. She weighed over 2 lbs. Now the charts say I am looking at a 6 lb dog. Her face looks different too and I wonder can they change that much in 6 days or did someone switch dogs on me? My gut tells me they did but what can I do? Any thought? Suggestions? |
Does the breeder still have the other pups? Did you get to see all the pups when you picked up your pup? If the breeder still as the other pups, can you go back and look at them. How do you know she was 1 lb at 7 weeks? What I'm implying is that your vet probably made an accurate measurement on an accurate scale, but how was the pup weighed by the breeder? All in all, 6 lbs is a very nice weight. |
I just picked her up two days ago. Last week when I picked her out, I requested that the breeder weigh her for me because I wanted to see where she fell on the chart. She was a little over 1 lb loz. She also had more of a teddy bear face (shorter snout) and I could swear her eyes were larger. My husband agrees with me. When I went to pick her up, they had her in the kitchen with her ears pinned up with white tape. Not seeing her with her siblings and then there was the tape. She had my collar on. I just trusted her. I had a gut feeling something wasn't right but it wasn't confirmed until the vet weighed her the next day. I called the breeder and she says it was just the food. She says she just was a pig for 6 days. Is it possible to even gain that much weight, basically almost double in size in 6 days? I just don't know but I have this knot in my stomach. I feel like she gave my baby to someone else. |
I'm not sure if they were switched or not, but those growth charts are just estimates. The smaller dog now, could end up the bigger dog later and vice versa. Sometimes they stop growing earlier than the growth chart says, and sometimes they grow longer. 6lbs is still a great dog. Our male is 7.3lbs and he is great, still small enough that I can hold him and have him on my lap, but big enough that I don't worry if he jumps off of the couch. But it certainly isn't right to switch dogs on you, I hope everything works out! |
Looking at the growth chart, the weight gain from 7 to 8 weeks is 2 oz. Seems like 15 oz is highly unlikely. |
Was my puppy switched? I agree. I know in my heart this is not the puppy I put the collar on. My husband knows it too. We feel really bad but what can we do. The breeder is not going to admit it. I know that a larger dog can be a great dog but I lost a 3 lb baby and I didn't want a large dog. I made that clear when I went to the breeder. |

Maybe you have been deceived..but I just want to say that my last yorkie weighed around 6lb and was tiny..she was my baby for 14 years..I then got my baby girl Pixie..she weighs a little over 3lb and to be honest theres not THAT much difference between them...Heidi was kind of chunkier and Pixie has a very slight frame...what i'm saying is...a 6lb'er is a very small dog indeed...try to get over your dissapointment..congratulations on your new yorkie baby...post some pictures..we would love to see!;) |
I dont think the puppy could have gained that much weight in that short of time |
I doubt if she would refund the money. There is something about size not being guaranteed in the contract. It is more that just the size. This puppy is just not as pretty as mine was but she is really sweet. I am just feeling really had!!!!!!! I need to vent and I am wondering if I am going to be able to bond with this puppy. |

Her looks will change over time. She may be a diamond in the ruff. |

If you know in your heart that this wasn't your baby, then I believe you are right. I recognized Missy the instant I saw her in real life (from when I picked her out in pictures). She looked exactly the same to me, and just had something about her. Even the breeder had troubles telling between the pups in the litter, but not me. I knew that Missy was "the one". :) I would demand a refund, assuming that she doesn't still have the other puppy. Then, I'd look elsewhere. Obviously this breeder can't be trusted! I'm so sorry you had to have your heart broken like this. |

Hate to say it but I think she was switched and I would call her on it there is a lot of people that would think twice about switching dogs I would lie and tell her I put polish on the rear nail and its not there when I picked her up and how diff she looks |
Did you pay more for her because she was supposed to be small? |
If this breeder actually did this, I would be concerned with what else has she lied about? (health of the parents, testing, etc...) Did you take any pictures of your puppy when you picked her out? If so, I would take the pictures and the puppy back to the breeder to weigh her on the same scale and then try to reach an agreement. My ultimate opinion is that if you think the breeder is capable of carrying out this deception (whether it was done or not) then this is not the breeder for you! You need to feel totally comfortable with a breeder. |
I like your idea about the polish. However, it wouldn't work in my case. She had the toenails clipped on all the puppies right before she sent them home. I already called the breeder (yesterday) and asked her about the possibility of the puppies being switched. She said that it wasn't possible and that my puppy had just been eating too much over the last 6 days since I last saw her. |

People can do such rotten things...It sounds like she is not going to admit or give you the dog that you chose. I'm not sure what you can do... However, look at this puppy for her and not for the terrible things the breeder did. Does she bring you happiness at all? It's not her, it's the breeder! She can be one of the best pups you have ever had. Big or small. |

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I would definitely ask to see all the pups again if she still has all of them. Just to give the breeder the benefit of the doubt, perhaps she had mix-up and will remedy it by giving you the pup that you originally selected. In any case, if she doesn't have all the pups available for you to determine if she did a switch, I would definitely recommend that you ask for your money back (that is if you're sure you do not want the other pup). Also make sure she give you at minimum a 1-year health guarantee if you decide to keep the pup. I hope everything works out. |

The YTCA recommends that breeders keep yorkies a minimum of 12 weeks, at this age you also have a much better chance of estimating the adult weight, just double it. However, many breeders who sell them younger, lie about the age, they are even younger than you think, because the know the dogs will be large. Always look at mom and dad for the best indicators of aadult size, especially look at mom. |
