Please do not worry too much, you are going to love having a yorkie in your life. Snickers is from a puppy mill, I bought him from a petstore not knowing any better. I'm an idiot...but I have to say..he is the light of my life. He is the sweetest, most precious lil guy ever and my husband and I both adore him to no end. We are newlyweds and Snickers is our 1st baby. The trials I have had with Snick was mainly the potty training. He still has his random accident, but is doing so incredibly well now that I am proud of all of us for it. The 1st 3 months were HARD!! Snick did develop a UTI (urinary tract infection) last month in Jan but I don't think that has anything to do with him being from a petstore, the vet said he may have licked his butt (hopefully after I kissed him!! haha lol!) Snick is a smaller baby coming in at about 3lbs and 3ounces but we love him the way he is. He is so affectionate and I swear there is a lil human in there who is gonna open his mouth up one day and say "I love you Mommy" to me...thats how much affection he shows us. He loves us as much as we love him...he is the best!! Let me know if you have any more "petstore yorkie" questions. They think it is ok to pee anywhere, esp their crate in the beginning.

Knock on wood, I've had Gucci for almost 6 years and I've never had any major issues with him. He's got a sensitive skin (I'm learning of now) and is terribly allergic to flea bites but other than that, nothing.
Heck, Gucci fell off the bed when he was a puppy (I nearly died and cried for hours), out of his carrying bag a couple of times as I am putting it down and once slammed in head first into a glass door not realizing it was closed. Man I tell you! He does have me on pins sometimes....and he's not even klutzy. But he's smart and alert so he hardly gets into accidents.

I'm no expert but yorkies do have alot of issues that can come up. From bad knee's to collapsed trachea. They can't climb stairs, they can fall from a very low level and hurt themselves very badly. Surgeries are SOO expensive and unexpected things can happen at any time. Of course this is the scary things. As long as you are aware of all the risks, do your research about where your yorkie is coming from. Make sure they have been vet checked and are healthy I say you don't need to worry so much. I wouldn't go for the tinest dog if you are busy and have children, perhaps a little bigger one. THey are very loyal and loving dogs. They are just like little babies which makes them very attached to their owners, they are so full of love with so many kisses and they just want to be on your lap all day, at least mine is that way! I have 5 all rescues and all small and the smaller any dog is the more problems. Like everyone has said.......do your homework and even than you may still have problems................but the joys so far outweigh the love and deep attachment you have to them. My kids accuse me of loving my yorkies more than them...........yeah...........they're unconditional (I do love my kids)

Congratulations on your new first baby. I am now raising my second yorkie, Missy. My first Yorkie Tara lived till 14 1/2. She had her share of problems as she aged, ending with congestive heart failure and blindness. I loved every day with her even the last few months which were difficult for her. As with any purebred they all can have problems. My baby Missy is two and perfectly healthy so far. Try not to worry and take it one day at a time and just love your baby. I remember having a lot of anxiety when Bailey was a puppy - worried about leaving her all day, worried about potential health issues, worried about potty training and vet costs - just plain worried all the time!!

But, we worked through all that. Today, she understands her daily routine, absolutely no health issues, was potty trained in 2 mos (reliable in 4 mos) and after the 1st year, the vet costs decreased considerably.

All is well - and sooooooo worth the anxiety we went through. She's naping on my lap right now!

About puppy mills -

Both of my boys came from puppy mills. One I bought directly from the mill, the other one was rescued when he was 6 months. My first one was really sick when we brought him home and almost died from a hypoglycemia fit due to the fact that the "breeders" told us that he was able to eat dry food, when it was obvious he couldn't. He would pick the kibble up, try to chew it, and drop it. He also has bad vaccine reactions and some minor food allergies. I also believe he is starting up with a luxating patella, which is not uncommon to the breed and it can be treated. Any of those things I mentioned could come with ANY dog, not just a mill dog, but it was more likely to happen in a dog that is not taken care of or was not bred properly. Our main problem with him is socialization. His first real interactions with humans were bad - the millers had two SCREAMING (not normal loud, like overly obnoxious loud) kids that petrified him and I doubt he had any human touch before then. We were the first love he was shown so he is VERY attached to his family and is very shy about meeting new people and especially children.

Smokey is an entirely different situation. We have not had one problem with his health at all. He is in tip top shape and is extremely friendly... probably too friendly. The biggest problem we've had with him is separation anxiety and training problems due to the issues he dealt with in his first 6 months of life.

Both of my dogs are now two years old and doing great.

wow thank you everyone for the amazing comments. I feel a little better now about everything. I did not get my baby today but I know I will be soon. Its just I am not working..and I am sorta afraid of getting the puppy and thinking about vet and stuff when I really have no money right now. I know I will be bring her soon as I know I can afford everything.

I will keep lingering on the boards. Its funny how I just learned about there health issues and care and when I walked into this dumb pet store they know nothing! Yorkies are so fragile.

The pet store that I went in today they had just gotten a male yorkie in. They wanted 2000 for it and it was 2 months old. One pound. They had it in this area where everyone could pet it and stuff and these older customers came in and were throwing s**t on it and like pushing it down and really being aggressive. I know puppys play but I would treat my dog like its one of my designer bags haha. You know what I mean =]

If you are getting your dog from a reputable breeder, then you're puppy should be okay. I think it is very smart of you to wait until you can afford vet bills and all of that.

I have the same problem as above
feel bad going to work, rush always to go home, skip things and dont make plans to be with him, the love is unconditional, Yorkies are amazing I am very lucky with my boy!, hes very well behaved and mannered they do need a lot of attention as they are like babies..but I have not had a "bad episode yet, peeing in the house etc..are not bad just learning and training,
enjoy you are very lucky to have one

Puppies are one of the biggest joys you can have in your life
Yes they are work and
Yes they need care and a lot of attention
But as you'll soon see ... they are way worth it

The place is country junction in PA.

Alot of the animals they sell are rescued and dogs come from breeders. They say there regestered but I dont know. The puppys are older then 2 months which where like the other dogs at that pet store I was looking in. I will not buy from there but country junction I dont know. There afforable because I dont have the money for a 2000 dog. I keep checking at shelters and stuff but nothing.
