BTW, Pampered Pets (on Hancock, same general area) is very good. That is where I take my dog now. Last edited by gwen10; 02-04-2009 at 02:40 PM. | |

| As a groomer this is what I have to say: You were given a half truth, its not completely false because here is what happens topknots are fine as long as the owner takes care of the hair. You have to make sure it's not too tight (easiest way to tell is after you get the rubber band on very very gently blow at their eyes. If you don't see a complete blink its too tight). Here is where the scarring comes in (and yes I have had clients with this problem) the topknot is left in too long and too tight so it causes irritation and a scab COULD form. I even had one lady try to cut the matted topknot out, what she didn't realize was that she was pulling up the scalp at the same time and guess what she sliced off the poor dogs scalp The poor baby had a big round scab on her head. |

That's awful !!May I ask , is a topknot different than a little ponytail on top the head ? I am guessing the topknot is slightly different in the way it is tied or something?

| hummm! Well this is an interesting thread. I usually keep mine in the "puppy cut" so they don't have the topknot. But I have thought about doing it. humm, maybe not.....

| I had a young woman show up with a possible stud for Mya. Her boy was very skinny and ate all the food that was down right away. He also had top knot and I noticed a bald spot under it. I asked her how often she takes his "Pony tail" out.. she said she NEVER HAD. The poor dog was one and half years old. I asked her if she meant that she makes a new one everyday when she brushes him and she said ...get this.. NO.. that is the same one from when he was a puppy!! I asked her if she would like a ponytail in her hair for a year and half ! she said she washed him though. I told her to cut it out. I also said I was not interested in breeding him with Mya. Poor little guy.

| The top knot, the way the profesionals do it, is made in two parts, then banded together and doubled over. If you google yorkie top knots it will show how the show people do it. |

| Sounds like you need to find a new Groomer? Or one that can give you better excuses? One of the main reasons why I "Groom" all 3 of my Yorkies myself, so I can have total control of the way they look. Besides saving money. That is NOT completely True, but I'm pretty sure that you would'nt purposely pull your own Dogs Hair out of it's scalp?

| The very first time I took my first yorkie to a groomer, she had the top knot so tight his scalp was actually bulging when I picked him up...I was furious!!! Obviously I have never gone back there...nor did I ever use a top knot again. Poor baby... So I can actually see how scaring could occur, if not done properly and maintained.

| Thor's Human Donating Member | Thor's previous owner kept him in a top knot most of the time. She stopped last year because he was going bald. She was probably pulling the hair too tight, but just thought I'd throw that out there. I keep him in a puppy cut now since he already looks like a little lady. |
