| Question about adult Yorkie Coat Colors I am just wondering b/c after looking at many Yorkie pictures I have noticed that almost all of the puppies are black with the brown highlights. My concern is that most of them when they grow into adults become light. I really want my puppy to keep the same dark colors as it grows into adulthood. I like the black and brown. Are there Yorkies that keep these colors? Does it all depend on the parents or what? Help |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | There are yorkies that do retain a darker color but not so much the black and tan markings you see in puppies. Genetics do determine adult coat color and texture. Generally a softer coated dog will retain darker color than a silk coated yorkie. Also, most yorkies do lighten in color with age, especially females kept for breeding. LOL...I was totally the opposite of you. The first yorkie I saw was an adult and I was confused because when I looked at yorkie puppies they were all black and tan, I wanted that adult coat color.

| Oh ok, well thank you for the input. I had found some older Yorkies that do look darker still and as you said I actually want the softer fur on the dog, not the silky, I don't care to grow my dog's hair out long like some Yorkies. I will keep it shorter and maintained rather than the really long hair. |

| Hello to another Carolinian and welcome to YorkitTalk. You've come to the right place for answers and you'll love it here. Like the above poster, I too was confused about the puppy color and adult Yorkies.
