Puppies fighting (playing?) - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hello,

We have 2 yorkie puppies and they like to play...they have chew toys etc but they seem to like to bite on each other. I hear the occasional yelp and I separate them for a little while but they go right back at it.

One is a female and one is a boy, they are a week apart but just about the same size. Sometimes I will hear the boy do a puppy growl at her and they go at it for a minute and then settle down and go to sleep next to each other. I just want to take sure this is normal.... Thanks in advance!

Sounds like our house. Gracie Ruth is 7 months older then Yogi, yet they are the same size...Yogi is just a bear.

They are constantly playing and "fighting" and oooohhhhh the noise they make. You'd swear it was a pack of wild Yorkies tearing the flesh off of some poor prey animal they just killed.

Occasionally a yip comes from one or the other. But they are quick to stop and start sniffing each other as if to say, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it, are ya ok?" Not 2 seconds later they'll be back at it or side by side eating a snack or laying down for a nap together. Sometimes it sounds really serious and I have to look over and they aren't even touching each other, just laying facing each other nose to nose tossing their head around and make an awful racket. Occasionally, but rarely, they are serious. They are quick to stop when hollered at to Quit! But mostly it's just full on hard puppy play.

to YT!! We are glad you are here!

My two will sometimes play rough...and sometimes (mainly Lily -- I have a boy and a girl) will be the one who gets really rough....I just stop them and get on to them and let them go back to playing...that normally works...well, normally Mojo is tired of her by then, so he ignores her.

i am so thankful i picked up miss buffey in person from her breeder LOL...i had never had small dogs before (and never more than one at a time) and i had never seen the way yorkies play with one another...i was watching the puppies play around and i asked the breeder, "is that normal? are they playing or fighting???"

... well it turns out they were playing, but had i not seen it and asked about it, i would have the same concerns you did

... as teresa said, the sounds they make while playing can be a little alarming lol

Thanks! I figured that. They are getting along and laying next to each other one minute and then next thing you know they are rolling around together wrestling.

LOL sometimes they sound like they are about to kill each other, but it's all play. If one is getting the better of the other and the one is yelping trying to get away then you might need to call off the play for a bit. But generally they work it out on their own.

As long as you aren't hearing any yelping .... they're fine

If you separate them they are going to look at you like

Puppy play can be loud and can look way more scarey
