I take my Cookie to the local petsmart for grooming and love my groomer but after hearing your story I am scared. I'm not sure I will ever take her back. I hope you find a good lawyer who will get this all over the national news.

Hello,
I am writing in plea of urgent attention to the negliance of Petsmart Inc. On January 6, 2009, I dropped off two of my dogs at Petsmart located in Daly City CA at around 12:30pm for a grooming service. At around 2:15pm I received a call from Petsmart informing me that my teacup yorkie (Bella) had just been bitten by a husky. I immediately rushed back to Petsmart but upon arrival, the grooming manager Jennifer informed me that Bella had been sent to Banfield hospital located in the store for medical attention. The scenery when I arrived to Banfield was unbearable. Bella had an oxygen mask on and was fighting for survival. Jennifer then rest Bella in my arms but all I can hear was the squirming cry from my poor dog. The doctors advise me to have Bella transfer immediately to an emergency vet hospital for further assistance. Apparently Banfield does not have the apprioate equipment to save Bella. Banfield offered to have an ambulance transport Bella to SFVS but it will take 2 hours before an ambulance can arrive. Bella cannot wait 2 hours! I took matters into my own hands and drove Bella to SFVS myself. On my way to SFVS, Bella was consistently gasping for air and saliva began to drool from her mouth like the symptom of a seizure. These last no more than 5 minutes before she stopped breathing. Bella was rushed into the ER when I arrived at SFVS. It took no more than 2 minutes before the doctor announced that he was unable to revive her.
Petsmart is a big company so how something like this can possibly happens under their supervision. I have asked repeatedly for a statement from Petsmart in regards to the events that have led to this tragedy. Instead of getting any cooperation, I was asked to come back tomorrow. Petsmart only inform me that everything is confidently among Petsmart and their cooperate office. They will not release any information. The district manager was very unprofessional for not even taking anything under his or his staff’s responsibility. He gave me a stupid example (if you where driving on a freeway and if a rock come towards you, you would not be able to react-saying if a dog jumps to bite another dog you can’t react fast enough) which is a ridiculous example! The dogs were supervised under their control which means they are fully responsible. I also over heard that the owner of the husky had already told them to keep the husky away from other dogs. If you were to search under DOG OWNERS SUING PETSMART!!
I pleading that you guys put this on the air because I want people to know about it and to be more cautious about how dogs are handled and that they should always pay special attention to one dog at a time. This has happened more than once and they should take this more seriously.

OMG, I'm so very sorry to hear about you HORRIFIC loss! I can identify with how careless petsmart can be when it comes to grooming their animals. When I took Bailey in there to just get a nail trim. I was holding him. The lady that cut the first nail cut it all the way down to the quik. He started bleeding all over!!! Bailey yelped and jumped. I looked at her and said what are you doing? She said it's not my fault, that's never happened before. She started making excuses and said that he would be fine. I started yelling at her and told her to do something. She put the quik stop on him. She asked me if she should finish cutting his nails and I said no you're not touching him and walked out. I took him straight to the vet and they said she had cut pretty far down. They didn't seem to have a problem cutting his nails like she did. I always try to persuade people from going there... I just get a bad feeling about Bannfield and the grooming places.

In our town we have a local news station, that does stories to expose incidents like this... do you? I would call the news paper, call the local news and tell them what they did and how callous they are about the incident. If you embarass them in public, they will have to acknowledge you. We had a lady pay 354 dollars for a billboard, that showed a picture of her ruined carpet and said they ruind it dont let it happen to you, with in two days the company had replaced the carpet in her home, after not returning her calls for over a month. I would with out a doubt if they were responsible for hurting my baby get a full page add, or bill board that said " Petsmart, allowed another dog to KILL MY Bella! protect your pet!" I bet that will get their attention!

BarbiesBabyJada 03-19-2009 12:11 PM

They are responiable they tell u to leave them so there under there care I would think they could be sued I am so sorry prayers going your way

ChantalB 03-19-2009 12:17 PM

HOPE YOU SUED THEM! THESE LOOSER!!! I am so mad and sad for you.

That is just unacceptable!!

I am sooooooo sorry for your lost!!

RIP tiny one...

summeragustin 04-12-2009 08:00 PM

This happened to us today also ...

Our family member Buddy died at 2:00pm the exact way today at Petsmart, we are so sad , he was my nine year old only dog, we are heartbroken.

JoshieBoy 04-12-2009 09:45 PM

I am so sad that your dog past away. PetSmart should be paying the vet bills and buying you a new dog. I would defiantly sue them. The dog's death was their fault. They have to take proper precautions when handling the animals.

Good Advice

chinovince 04-12-2009 10:30 PM

responbility.

ask them to pay off all......not enough for the sentimental hurt.

FlDebra 04-13-2009 05:56 AM

Not sure if this has already been settled or not, and I would hate to put a dollar amount on any of my pets, but....Petsmart should not be limited to only the replacement cost of a puppy and the medical costs.

I would detail every penny spent on little Bella from day 1. Every vet visit for shots, check-ups, etc. Cost to pay someone else to train, even if you did it yourself -- the time spent still has value. A pet that you have had for years, is not the same little puppy that first came to you. So, they should not only have to replace a puppy, but also pay for the costs of what this family spent to bring Bella from puppy to the day Petsmart so carelessly allowed her to be attacked. Hard to believe they wouldn't also be liable for some compensation for mental duress, heartache, and emotional loss.

Then just in case someone thought I was trying to profit instead of sending a clear and distinct message to Petsmart that they need to take their repsonsibility a lot more seriously.... I would donate all above the cost of finding a new Yorkie to a Yorkie Rescue or shelter.

I lost my very first Yorkie at a groomers. I have always felt I should have followed through to make the groomer pay for their negligence. I was so devastated at the time, I kept thinking nothing could bring her back. But I have since wondered how many other poor dogs have been put at risk. Sometimes you have to make a stand just to protect those coming after you.

Condolences to the OP for the loss of your sweet Bella. Bless you for making this public when I know how painful it must be for you. I hope the heartache can be soothed by loving memories.

a_jgonzalez 04-13-2009 08:37 AM

I am so sorry this happened to you, I would definetly do something about this. Petsmart is resposible for controlling all the animals is their care.

wee nan 04-13-2009 08:49 AM

omg! this is shocking!! i am so so sorry for your loss of poor bella..it never should have happened..they are suppose to be the proffesionals! any1 knows you should keep a husky away from a tiny yorkie unless they are brought up together..it wont bring back bella, but i would defo get myself a lawyer, they have to be liable! they were in care of your little 1 at the time! and they are suppose to be providing a service! sue the asses off petsmart is wot i say.. and thanku for letting every1 else know about this, i doubt any1 who reads this will ever take there pet to petsmart ever again! sorry for ranting on and on..u are in my prayers.x

naturalallure 04-13-2009 08:57 AM

oh wow. how disheartening. and i am so sorry to hear about your loss. i hope legal action was pursued because this is absolutely not acceptable! please keep us updated. && i always come across as a snooty yorkie owner, but i'm one of the mommies that refuses to leave my baby anywhere with anyone (except fam and close friends). and for reasons such as these. although it wasn't intentional, so many people underestimate the fragility of our babies, especially among other animals :(

Gennies 04-13-2009 09:03 AM

Wow, I'm so shocked that so many pets have died in their hands. It's so scarry to know that they aren't more careful with the babies in their care, but are always super sweet when you go in there. We go every week to Petsmart, not their grooming department. To the store and were actually planning a trip this afternoon, now I'm not so sure. Is it just the groomers? Or Petsmart's policies that don't cover controlling other animals? Does anyone know?

I'm so sorry for everyone that's lost a baby or had a baby injured that have posted here. So shocking and sad.

I am not sure. I always wonder what happens when one of the big dogs people are walking around Petsmart attacks another one. It is bound to happen. Everytime I go in ours there are big dogs that are NOT behaving. Lots of loud barking , straining at the leash, jumping and lunging at people. I won't take mine in unless they are in a safe carrier and have only done that when I needed to stop after a vet visit. Maybe it is just our area, but we seem to have an abundance of loud, untrained, HUGE dogs in our Petsmart.

Don't get me wrong, big dogs are fine and I have wonderful memories of our black labs from years ago. But if my large dog was not trained & well-behaved, I would not pull him into a Petsmart to terrorize the place. It is obviously no treat for the big dogs either!

I take my apple to benfield. I have noticed that the vet section is across the vet and they are both located in petsmart. I have seen that in the grooming section each groomer is a few feet away from the next handling the pet they are caring for. perhaps you may want to have someone go in and take a picture of the set up to help your case. I would also be worried that a bigger dog in on the next table and is able to go after apple if the groomer turns their back for a second they should each have some sort divider between them

motherhen_44100 04-19-2009 02:13 PM

you just have to keep close watch on them. I just got back from a FrankArnolds concert in Tusla Ok. And I took mine with me cause I did not want to have to leave them at the vets to board. We stayed at the Hilton they only charged 75.00 for the week. It was real nice. Maggie the dog I just lost about 8 months ago. I boarded her at the vets and she was doing real good when I left her, but when I got back she had lost 5lbs, and staggered out the door. She died after that about a couple of weeks, I never could get her back on her feed. I know they fed her the wrong dog food, she was on a special diet, Oh I can't prove they did, but she always acted like that if she got into the other dogs (pomchi) food. They knew she was on a special diet, they had it in her records. I don't trust to leave molie ann there now.
Just have to really watch out for the little friends of ours. People don't care.
hugs motherhen.

I would get a lawyer. I would NEVER stand for it. I take my Shelby to a grommer that does it in her home and came highly recommended. I asked around a lot and really looked into her then took Shelby for a "meet and greet" before she ever went for a gromming. I am so sorry for your loss.

Perrella 02-07-2011 04:19 PM

I just read all of this and I simply have not words that can help.

Please know how very, very sorry I am that this happened to your sweet tiny baby. RIP sweet baby!

Lil Sis 02-07-2011 04:26 PM

I just read this also... I don't have words for how horrible this is!!
What about the husky? I think the dog owners of the dog that "Killed" the yorkie would have some liability also!

smyrfette 02-07-2011 04:27 PM

awww hugs so sorry to hear of the tragic loss of bella.

I say sue them as well its not about the money but about the stupidity and neglect allowing this to happen.

What part of do not put this dog near other dogs did they not understand.

It could that they told one person and others didn't know and that is not good for business

That is just awful that you had to go through all of that and the poor baby I can't imagine what she went through.

Beamers Mom 02-07-2011 04:31 PM

This is an old thread from 2009 - and the OP hasn't been online since July 2009.

BiewerMommy 02-07-2011 04:54 PM

I am glad that it was commented on because as a new member of Yorkie talk I have never seen this and would likely not scroll far enough back to have found it. It is always a good reminder of what can happen in the hands of others that don't care for our babies like we do.

eddiesmom14 02-07-2011 05:11 PM

This is just awful. Buddy and Bella's owners, I know you are in different towns but you need to get together and find some others with the same experience and file a class action suit. I would write letters to the editors, get it on TV if I could and picket in front of their store. They would be so tired of me they would want to kill me.

MAKE THEM PAY! One way or another.

chinovince 02-07-2011 06:44 PM

terrible .......

Dianab28 02-08-2011 07:38 AM

OMG! I can't imagine how horrible that must of been for you or your little ones! No one should ever have to go through something like that. I know money won't bring your little one back but maybe suing them will bring attention to the public and make them more careful in the future. It sounds like that's the only thing they trulyh care about :(

Yes I will never forget this little one. She was my baby. I did sue the vet and everything worked out in my favor thank you.

My deepest condolences on the lost of Bella. My prayers are with you.
