adopting a rescue Has anyone here adopted a rescue yorkie....i am having the hardest time...I want a tiny yorkie pup between 5 months and 1 and a half but I've applied everywhere and they are all already adopted by the time I get to them...i'd like him or her to stay around 5 lbs and I have a yorkie already...any ideas? |
Most of the time, the dogs in rescues are older, larger, and not your average looking Yorkie. Precisely why they are abandoned. A lot of them are rescued from puppy mills or are found on the streets. You will have a hard time finding a puppy, especially a small one. If that's what you truly want, I suggest you find a reputable breeder and buy one. |
any suggestions on breeder? |
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some quite lovely yorkies in rescue! Many of them are simply diamonds in the rough...waiting for someone to bring them to their full potential! I have some what I consider, absolutely beautiful pups...all of them former rescues and would be very happy to share their before and after pics that would blow your mind! I can assure you that if I lined them up with any yorkies (other than show yorkies) you would not be able to tell they were rescues. I am stunned to hear anyone say that rescues are not your average looking yorkie. Exactly what is average? Maybe the one poster meant to say not your typical show yorkie. Please, please do not think that all yorkies in rescue are large, old and not good looking..that is just not so. They are lovely...each and every one of them..now, of course if you are looking for that perfect little female you probably should seek out a breeder...and yes, do your research! There are good breeders out there....unfortunately there are also many mills and back yard breeders that will take you for a ride. As you have found out, there are more applicants for these yorkies in rescue than there are yorkies. I am not sure why you are looking for a rescue if you have such stringent requirements for a pet! The idea of getting a rescue is to help a pup that someone else has discarded. Please also keep in mind that when you get another small one, do not let her stay up on high places where she can be injured. I just saw a previous post and it sounded like you thought it was the tile floor. It does not matter what type of surface they fall on! I had a yorkie walk off a bed onto a carpeted floor...it was horrifying...thousands of dollars later he was able to walk again. I was lucky he did not die...he had herniated two cervical discs in his neck and was unable to even stand up. He was about seven pounds which is a good size for a yorkie. They really are fragile! Good luck in your search and please be careful...whether it be a rescue or a breeder you obtain one from. You really need to take your time and the right one will come along! |

3 Attachment(s) Here is my George. I am posting before and after pics of him. I adopted him in 2005 from a rescue, and you can see how much he changed in one year...and then two! I have other examples like him! I am a firm believer that they are all beautiful! It takes good nutrition and picking the right cut for their hair. A good groomer and weekly baths..also daily brushing. It usually takes at least a year to really see a huge difference..at least in my experience. I always share these with the hope that people will see what gems they really are! 2005 Attachment 258829 2006 Attachment 258831 2007 Attachment 258830 |
The point of my post was to not discourage people from rescuing, OR say that they were UGLY. My post was directed towards this particular OP, letting he/she know that if they wanted a dog with so many requirements, it would be difficult finding their perfect dog in a rescue. I used the term "not so average" because they are not normally dogs that are to standard. They are larger, they don't have standard coloring, sometimes their ears don't stand. I was not saying that they are not beautiful, of course they are ALL beautiful. Maggie is one of the best, well-behaved, adorable Yorkies I have ever seen. People tell me all the time she is beautiful. |

I am also in rescue and am not offended. I just don't want people to think there is not potential. You are right that they normally come to rescue pretty beat up...it is tragic what happens to some of them. People obtain them for all the wrong reasons and fail to care for them properly as you well know. Such a throwaway society we live in. |

First...George is adorable. Second...keep trying for a rescue. My sister had to try several times before she got Sully. |
2 Attachment(s) Hi, I adopted a 2 yr old 6 months ago. He's the love of my life. He is such a happy little guy. He was only there for 3 weeks but in that time he had to be put on meds for lyme desease, had oitment for his ears, neutered, and had 2 teeth pulled. He was dopped off with matts in a urine soaked carrier. With all that he was such a happy and loving dog. This is Mr Perkin the day I brought him home and then here he is 2 months later. |
2 Attachment(s) I too adopted a yorkie about 3 months ago. She is 7 yrs old and weighs 5lbs. She is the joy of my life and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I included before and after pictures of her. I took the before picture on the way to the groomers. As you can see, because of neglect, her hair had to be shaved off but is growing back. She is the most beautiful yorkie in the world with or without hair.....at least to me. She was also used for breeding and spent most of her life in a crate. |

Not all yorkies in rescue have been "abandoned". Some have owners that can no longer care for them due to death or sickness and I have seen some lovely yorkies in rescue. |

Thank you for sharing AND for giving Mr. Perkins a good home. He is a doll baby! Another example of an adorable rescue! |

Not all yorkies in rescue have been "abandoned" is the story for 3 of our 4 boys. DJ was from an owner in S FL and taken well away to the Seminole County shelter. Zack's owner died and the family did not want him. Zeke was turned in. Harley D was probably abandoned by a BYB because of his age. Not being "lazy" but I work rotating shifts and an older rescue dog is better for both the dog and me. To bring a puppy in at this time would be unfair to the puppy. Maybe in 5 years when I retire it will be different I am able to devote the time for their care, well being and give them attention and play, and for them, the attention and love that they ones need. When they jump up on the recliner and put their heads on my legs, there is no greater joy or love shown. A lot of times the owners are going into a nursing home or assisted living facility and they have to give up their pets. This is where rescue groups and shelters really shine and find new homes for the pets. These pets usually have been well taken care of, trained and "potty" trained (outside or pads). Tks for listening. Bob |

4 Attachment(s) I am so happy to see this turn into a happy thread about everyone's rescue stories. I have three and love them all. Pebbles was a rehome. My friend gave her to me when she decided she didn't have the time for her. If I wasn't going to take her she was going to the shelter. She was 5 months old when I brought her home. Not a true rescue but she surely isn't a standard yorkie at 11 lbs! She has papers that some thing are so important but, unless you plan on having their "papers" framed and attached to their neck really what difference does it make? There are YTers that have purchased from a breeder and ended up with a 10, 12 or 20 lb. yorkie which goes to show you just never know what you are going to end up with in the end. Then there is Doodlebug- I was very fortunate to adopt a puppy from a rescue and I realize that is not the norm, but then again I didn't have a long list of requirements on age, sex, color , weight, etc. He is a Morkie and his mom was purchased from an Amish Puppy Mill auction while she was pregnant with his litter. He was a puppy at only 10 wks when I brought him home from the rescue and is a doll. He is from a mill but I would say that many, many people right here on YT have purchased their puppies from pet shops aka puppy mills. So as far as I'm concerned he is not inferior to any other pet on YT. I was not looking for a specific size, color, or age, it was all by chance that I found him. We did drive to OH to pick him up but worth the 7 hour drive. He is very smart and beautiful to me. The sad thing is that it's been almost a year since his mom was saved and she is still at the rescue. She is absolutely a beautiful Maltese but at least she is still not living a life in a cage making puppies. Finally Bogey- I found him right here on YT in the rescue section! :) JillandJack posted pictures of him and they thought he was a Yorkie but when I went to look at him he was also a Morkie. We think he is somewhere around 2 He was tossed onto the side of the road during the horrible flooring in IN back in September. He was a total mess! Matted, nails grown into his paws, extremely underweight, and he has a rubberband in his hair that was actually rotten. He is still a work in progress but he is mommies favorite (just don't tell the others);). 1. Pebbles 2. Doodlebug 3 & 4. Bogey on the way home and then about a month ago. Thank you to everyone that posted pictures, stories and their support of rescue! There are so many more little ones in shelters right now. The way that I look at it is they just need love and if you have love to give they will give back 1000x's over. LadyJane you are so correct about not being able to tell just by looking which are rescues and which are not. They all just need love. |
All my yorkies are little rescued ones . They are the joys of my life . |

Grandma just adopted a 8 years old little girl from a rescue . She is the most beautiful and happy little one . Its really heartwarming to feel the unconditional love she gives . She goes to one person to another always wagging her little tail and giving kisses to everyones . Needless to say we love her very much . |
Thank you for posting pictures of your rescues. It confirms in my mind that I will rescue my next little one. It's just awesome to see how much these little ones change with just a little bit of love and care. |

Oh...I knew what you meant. I only responded because someone who is not in rescue might not...I never want people to think that rescues are less than! I know you love them!! :) |
Our Yorkie rescue was about 7 pounds when we got her, she was skin and bones. She is healthy now but I haven't had her on a scale in months. She has only been with us 6 months but considering where she came from she is doing very well. |
thanks for all the stories and input I know it sounds like I'm being particular but when I see the right yorkie for me it doesn't matter size color or anything...I think I am just thinking of what rhenny looked like...i really do want to rescue one..where on yt do i find the rescues? I will post when i find my new baby.. |
