adopting a rescue
 

Has anyone here adopted a rescue yorkie....i am having the hardest time...I want a tiny yorkie pup between 5 months and 1 and a half but I've applied everywhere and they are all already adopted by the time I get to them...i'd like him or her to stay around 5 lbs and I have a yorkie already...any ideas?

Most of the time, the dogs in rescues are older, larger, and not your average looking Yorkie. Precisely why they are abandoned. A lot of them are rescued from puppy mills or are found on the streets. You will have a hard time finding a puppy, especially a small one. If that's what you truly want, I suggest you find a reputable breeder and buy one.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some quite lovely yorkies in rescue!Many of them are simply diamonds in the rough...waiting for someone to bring them to their full potential! I have some what I consider, absolutely beautiful pups...all of them former rescues and would be very happy to share their before and after pics that would blow your mind! I can assure you that if I lined them up with any yorkies (other than show yorkies) you would not be able to tell they were rescues.
I am stunned to hear anyone say that rescues are not your average looking yorkie. Exactly what is average? Maybe the one poster meant to say not your typical show yorkie.
Please, please do not think that all yorkies in rescue are large, old and not good looking..that is just not so. They are lovely...each and every one of them..now, of course if you are looking for that perfect little female you probably should seek out a breeder...and yes, do your research! There are good breeders out there....unfortunately there are also many mills and back yard breeders that will take you for a ride. As you have found out, there are more applicants for these yorkies in rescue than there are yorkies.
I am not sure why you are looking for a rescue if you have such stringent requirements for a pet! The idea of getting a rescue is to help a pup that someone else has discarded.
Please also keep in mind that when you get another small one, do not let her stay up on high places where she can be injured. I just saw a previous post and it sounded like you thought it was the tile floor. It does not matter what type of surface they fall on! I had a yorkie walk off a bed onto a carpeted floor...it was horrifying...thousands of dollars later he was able to walk again. I was lucky he did not die...he had herniated two cervical discs in his neck and was unable to even stand up. He was about seven pounds which is a good size for a yorkie. They really are fragile!
Good luck in your search and please be careful...whether it be a rescue or a breeder you obtain one from. You really need to take your time and the right one will come along!

Sorry if you were offended by my post. I have a rescue Yorkie and I am active with a Yorkie rescue locally, as you can see from my signature. I was in no means trying to talk bad about rescues (like I said, I have one). They are amazing dogs and we will more than likely never buy a dog ever again. My point was, like you said, if the OP has such stringent requirements, it is unlikely that they will find their perfect dog in a rescue. Most Yorkies in rescues ARE older (as in not puppies), and larger in size. That is simply a fact, and there is nothing wrong with that. If that's not what an owner wants, they need to be aware that a rescue is perhaps not the best place to look.

Here is my George. I am posting before and after pics of him. I adopted him in 2005 from a rescue, and you can see how much he changed in one year...and then two! I have other examples like him!
I am a firm believer that they are all beautiful! It takes good nutrition and picking the right cut for their hair. A good groomer and weekly baths..also daily brushing. It usually takes at least a year to really see a huge difference..at least in my experience.
I always share these with the hope that people will see what gems they really are!

The point of my post was to not discourage people from rescuing, OR say that they were UGLY. My post was directed towards this particular OP, letting he/she know that if they wanted a dog with so many requirements, it would be difficult finding their perfect dog in a rescue. I used the term "not so average" because they are not normally dogs that are to standard. They are larger, they don't have standard coloring, sometimes their ears don't stand. I was not saying that they are not beautiful, of course they are ALL beautiful. Maggie is one of the best, well-behaved, adorable Yorkies I have ever seen. People tell me all the time she is beautiful.

I am also in rescue and am not offended. I just don't want people to think there is not potential. You are right that they normally come to rescue pretty beat up...it is tragic what happens to some of them. People obtain them for all the wrong reasons and fail to care for them properly as you well know. Such a throwaway society we live in.

I too have rescue and I'm not offended. You are sooo right about rescues if you are looking for a show "yorkie" (the look that everyone thinks of when you say Yorkie) well maybe a rescue is not your thing. You can't pick the look you would like, as if you went to a breeder. It does take a long time to get a yorkie from a rescue to "look like a yorkie" Ivy is now on the way and it's been a little over 5 months. Also she is slow in coming out of her shell you don't know what kind of life they came from. My poor Ivy lived in a cage for 5 years having babies for all of the pet stores. So please STAY AWAY from pet stores, and maybe you need to look for a breeder. Good luck you will find your baby.

I adopted a 2 yr old 6 months ago. He's the love of my life. He is such a happy little guy. He was only there for 3 weeks but in that time he had to be put on meds for lyme desease, had oitment for his ears, neutered, and had 2 teeth pulled. He was dopped off with matts in a urine soaked carrier. With all that he was such a happy and loving dog.
This is Mr Perkin the day I brought him home and then here he is 2 months later.

I too adopted a yorkie about 3 months ago. She is 7 yrs old and weighs 5lbs. She is the joy of my life and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I included before and after pictures of her. I took the before picture on the way to the groomers. As you can see, because of neglect, her hair had to be shaved off but is growing back. She is the most beautiful yorkie in the world with or without hair.....at least to me. She was also used for breeding and spent most of her life in a crate.

Not all yorkies in rescue have been "abandoned". Some have owners that can no longer care for them due to death or sickness and I have seen some lovely yorkies in rescue.
