just had our first scare.. he was acting a little funny..he was shaking a little and when i took him out the cage he wouldnt stand up he kind of was flopping over so i started to freak.. i gave him 2ml of the nutra vitamin nd was rubbing his body to get the sugar flowing through his blood.. it was like he got a burst of energy in 2 minutes and he started running around.. i think hes gunna be ok but jesus my heart stopped for a few minutes. |
Glad he is okay, these little ones can scare the life out of you. :) |
im still worried, when he is sitting still his head is kind of wobbling left to right .. please help =( |
i really dont kno what it is but im bumping this up for you so hopefully someone sees it that knows what it could be! |
Do you have an after-hours vet in your area? Most of the time you can call for an opinion. They will give advice and tell you whether you might need to bring them in. Mine have never had sugar issues, so I'm not much help with that though. |
You need to contact the er vet, and probably take him in. Sounds like hypoglycemia, try to get him to eat anything, use more nutrical and call the vet PLEASE! He can go downhill very, very quickly. |
This pup needs to see a vet. Nutrical should pull them out of an attack within a few minutes and it sounds like it did help but since he is still having what sounds like neurologic issues and isn't being pulled out of it fully, he has to see a vet. If he still won't come out of it with sugar, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a liver issue (liver shunt) here. I hope he is okay. :( |
Giving a pup Nutri-cal will help but don't think they're okay with just that. For him to have gotten to that state, he was pretty weakened. He needs to get some food in him and also rest. Just because he wants to play, don't let him. It can take a couple of days for a pup to recover from an episode such as this so make sure you get some food in him, keep him warm and do not let him exert himself. |
Hope things are better. Can we have an update? |
I didn't realize he was still doing stuff, I would call the er vet and take him in, they will crash very fast and you don't want that trust me.:( |
I hope your little one is feeling better. |
This is a common thing with a new puppy. They may not eat as well as they should and play too hard. A small pup simply doesn't have the energy reserves you may think. Even if they haven't been playing much, they can have an episode if they don't eat properly and often. A pup should have a firmness to their body and should not feel slack or flaccid. If you ever notice this, you should make sure he eats right then even if they have no apparent symptoms. Nutri-cal is good but watch out and don't overdue it as it can cause a sugar spike in their blood. A dab a couple of times a day should be fine but there's really no substitute for him eating properly. Some pups do just fine until they're weaned and then become picky eaters and can have episodes even with no under-lying health issues. Since you've had this episode with him, he should be checked several times a day to make sure he has a firmness to him and feels robust. Don't just trust him to eat by putting food out...make sure he eats and this will help avoid future episodes. If he's eating well and still has these bouts, you must consider the possibility that he may have other health issues. As I mentioned earlier, it will take him a couple of days to fully recover even though he may seem fine sooner so absolutely limit his activity. |
Update: He ate...a lot..he didnt like the kibble i was mixing with it.but now its been 10 minutes since then and his head is still kinda bobbing...and he seems a little lazy..what do you guys think..thanks in advance.. |
Adding: He also seems to go in and out of it every 10 minutes or so...hell be really lazy and all of a sudden he's a lightning bolt.. |
i think itd be best to contact a vet for an opinion, for it to keep continuing makes me nervous, being so tiny things happen so quickly and you cant be to careful when it comes to your baby |
Take him to the Vet ASAP! The head bobbing does not sound good at all. |
he ate alot nd i put i gave him 1 more ml of nutri cal.. hes in the cage now,im trying to call emergency vet places.. |
good, thats what you need to do...let us kno,im staring at the computer waiting to hear any updates |
It's good that he ate but it will take a while for that to do him much good. DO NOT let him run around....keep him as still as possible. What has happened is that his blood sugar has dropped and it will take some time for his levels to balance out. I would keep a close eye on him through the night and try to feed him at least a small amount every hour or so until he's plumped back out and feels firm. I lost a little girl last year to an episode where I thought she had come out of it. I had stayed up all night with her, feeding her a little and holding her. She SEEMED fine and had for a while so I put her in her pen in the bedroom and took a nap. I woke 3 hours later and she was gone. That's why I'm saying to keep him from running around, feed him often and don't relax about it for a couple of days. Another shot of Nutri-cal wouldn't hurt in a while but don't overdo it. You didn't say how big he is but the smaller they are, the longer it may take to bounce back so keep an eagle eye on him. Keeping him warm is also important. |
Just read your last update. It's good that you're calling the vet. This is not something you should deal with on your own unless you are sure about how to treat it. Better to have a vet bill than lose your baby. Just consider what I posted earlier general info for future reference. Best of luck and please keep us posted. |
You have gotten great advice. It is important to get him to a vet asap. It may well end up being hypoglycemia, but the head bobbing has me concerned about possible liver problems as Ellie said. |
Did you find a vet that is open? |
???anything??? |
I hope she took the puppy to the vet and will update us when she gets back. This little guy is only eight weeks old. |
:aimeeyorkI hope that your pup is ok:animal-pa |
Eight weeks?? OMG, that could be very dangerous. Yes, she should definitely be at the vet's. There's no way a new Yorkie mom could be truly prepared to handle an episode in one so young. I was just looking in my local paper the other day and there are Yorkies advertised as being 'ready to go' at 7 weeks old. And so many 'breeders' just want to make a sale and offer no advice on how to care for these little ones. Not trying to sidetrack the issue at hand, but so many problems could be avoided if they would only hold their puppies until they're not so vulnerable. |

me too!its bad enough they put the poor pup thru this but it is also sad these owners who really do not kno any better deal with this heartache they dont deserve!all they want is a pup to love and then they go thru this |
