I agree with you both but sometimes it seems that puppy buyers are shopping for a heartache. I had a lady and her daughter come by the other day to see a little male I have. I had talked to the daughter several times prior to them coming over but the mom was going to be the one actually spending the money. They were looking for a playmate for a small male they have and my little guy is just under 3 pounds at 5 1/2 months. I haven't been in any hurry to place him until I found a really suitable home and thought that, from my conversations with the daughter, that they were good prospects. Anyway, this lady tells me that with the Yorkie they now have, he went into hypoglycemic shock 2 days after they got him and it cost them $3,000 in vet bills to save him. Well, they loved my little guy but the mom balked at the price (which is very reasonable). I haven't heard back from them and for me, it's just as well. Seems like she would rather save a few bucks up front rather than get a guaranteed healthy Yorkie with breeder support. And this is after spending all that money at the vet on the first one. Mind you, this was a very wealthy woman but with her attitude, she's just setting herself up for another heartache. I'm sure there's a breeder down here somewhere with a cheaper Yorkie that will tell her just what she wants to hear to make a sale and then be unavailable for them. Some people just never learn.:( |

Praying for the pup! I hope she gives us an update:animal-pa |
Hi Melissa, how's Prince doing this morning? |
I hope your baby was seen by the vet and is doing better today |
Checking for an update.:confused::confused: |
I never had problems with hypoglycemia when my pups were babies. I think what might have helped was I free feed. They always have access to food and water. When they are that small it might be a good idea to leave food and water down all the time for them to be able to eat and drink when they need to. I also gave them a treat every single morning when they went pee outside. This probably put enough in thier tiny tummies to tide them over. Im sorry your baby scared you. I would have been a mess if that happened to me also! Glad he's ok! :) |

sorry had to turn off the computer and relax for my own sake i was gunna go into cardiac arrest myself.. welll i couldnt find an open vet so i called the breeder and he told him exactly what was happening..he said since prince was able to walk that he was gunna be okay.. the nutri cal seemed to open up his appetite and he just went off on the food.. what happened was my bf mixed kibble w his wet and he hated it so he wouldnt eat. it takes a little time to figure out wat they like esp. bc they r such picky eaters. but anyway my bfs mom came over and helped us take care of him w the breeder on the fone until he fell asleep. he seems just fine this morning but im not lettin him out of the cage at all today & im gunna make an appt. for the vet for today just to be sure. thanks so much for caring & u guys r right this is really hard for us. i didnt know having a puppy was such hard work. if i ever get a puppy again i will make sure it is at least 6 months. i dont know why they let these puppies go so small but now keep prince healthy is my main priority, thanks again xoxo |
and ii think he ate so much last night so he wasnt eating this morning but i fed him by hand and gave him a little deli turkey |
12 weeks is usually ok,depending on size, they shouldnt have let him go at 8 weeks but that isnt your fault at all,you know for next time and your doing everything you can for your baby and thas all you can do:) glad he is ok |
I'm glad he's doing a little better, but I really would take him to see the vet today. You can get some professional medical advice. I'm glad the breeder helped you, but I would be cautious about advice I took from a breeder who let that baby leave at 8 weeks. A vet will be able to give you an unbiased opinion. Just make sure that your vet has experience with toy breeds. Hugs! How terrifying that must have been for you! |

Just so you know, the Yorkshire Terrier Club requires breeders to keep puppies until they are at least 12 weeks old. The risk of hypoglycemia is much less after three months. Did your breeder give you any information on it? If not, this is a good article: Toy Breed Hypoglycemia |

Poor little Prince, I hope he's ok. Good luck. |
I just thought of something. Another reason to go today is that it will be VERY difficult to get veterinary treatment Wednesday and Thursday due to the holiday, and it never fails that my little ones get sick over the holidays. This way if the vet is already aware of the situation, he/she will be in a better position to help you if anything should (God forbid) happen over the holidays. |

Deli turkey can be high in fat and it is full of preservitives and sodium. It isn't healthy and, depending on fat content, can border on dangerous. If you want to give hiim meat as a treat, boneless skinless chicken breast is better. :) |

I'm still very concerned for him because with Nutrical, he should've been doing tons better 5-10 minutes after. I hope there isn't something more going on here... |
So glad to hear he's doing better. There's been a lot of worry going on here for you guys. I agree with the other post. Just because he's walking around doesn't mean he's over it. Make sure he gets plenty of rest until he's completely restored. Until he's older, you'll want to strictly limit his playtime so he doesn't have another episode. I would think 15 minutes would be enough and then have him eat and rest. Nutri-cal about twice daily wouldn't hurt for now, especially after playtime. It's not your fault this happened so don't feel bad. Make sure he stays firm and plump feeling and don't count on him eating if you leave food out for him. Also, I've heard from a vet that karo syrup gets into their system faster than Nutri-cal. It's not as good a product but will work faster if he's showing distress again. Best of luck to you. |
i have nutrical and kyro syrup but the kyro syrup is only for emergency and says 911 on the outside so i remember.. he is goin into the vet in about half hour to get some shots and i will def tell the doctor whats going on.. ill update you wen i get back |

Boy, this is bringing back memories! I got Adie when she was 7 weeks old and the very next day she got sick with a virus. It was the 4th of July and there wasn't a vet anywhere around for advice. This board helped so much! I got her to the emergency clinic where it was touch and go for a while. When I got Skeeter I waited until he was 12 weeks old. I wasn't about to go through the same experience! Even if her age had nothing to do with her getting sick at my house, Adie should have stayed with her mother for a few more weeks. At the very least the breeder would have had to pay all the vet bills - roughly $3000.00. I hope Prince is going to be alright. |
