| ![]() My baby loves walks... But after her first walk in the rain, she realized how shivery cold it is even in her raincoat her head and legs and back end still get drenched. She trembles like a miserable wet dog. Now with below zero temperature and heavy snowfall, before getting out of the car, she thinks she'd really love to walk. Once she walks for maybe two blocks, she's shivering like crazy already. With the chill now, she just looks so pitiful and lost shaking on the spot. She'd still keep walking if we were on the go, but once she gets picked up and tucked inside daddy's jacket, she doesn't even try to peek her head out while trying to soak up as much warmth as possible. Even after we get back into the car, she doesn't fight to get out like she normally would have under normal weather conditions until she gets totally warmed up, she just sticks her face out enough to keep an eye on things. It got me so worried once when we walked into a store, picked her up (pre-snowfall but with the arctic chill in place already) and she was tucked into her daddy's jacket riding kangaroo-style and was looking like she couldn't keep her eyes open! It was a scare as I was worried she was displaying signs of hypothermia. This was with 3 layers of clothing! A thick Harley fleece hoody, a knit sweater, a thin fleeced inner layered windbreaker and a thick padded suedish harness... Just this past weekend while our baby was freezing to near-death snuggled up inside daddy's coat downtown, we noticed a tiny little... no more than 3lb'er yorkie walking right by us by his posh old human ma and pa. That little guy/gal seemed to be doing fine with just a sweater though we couldn't be sure as it was constantly pulling off to one side (away from the owners). So... only you should know how much your dog can tolerate? It's my baby's first winter. My 12lb shihtzu was fine being walked out in all sorts of weather but she'd just do her business real quick within half a block from the house during colder days. But she had more body fat to burn and relatively thicker/bigger bones than my 6lb yorkie (who's a skinny little wimp--erm, princess). ![]() I do believe they need their socialization and mine absolutely loves being outside but can't take much of the cold and is hardly aware of her limits. She doesn't ever complain about much except when she's not out of the car fast enough as soon as daddy pulls the handbrake. ![]() Before our baby was fully vaccinated, we took her out after her 2nd set of shots as we got her a little older and she got her shots later, we didn't want her to be afraid of strange places and people, so we had her in her soft carrier (Portable Pet Home) which I called her mini tent and walked around populated areas with her so that she'd be used to being taken around and not miss out on too much of the summer weather. We're glad we did as she's a perfect angel riding in her carrier with or without her head out anywhere and everywhere we go. |
