| advice please Both my Yorkie and my Shorkie eat pooh when they are outside. Now it is winter and harder to clean up right after them(I have a big fenced yard). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to alieviate this annoying behaviour? |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I have heard (but not tried) that adding a little pineapple to their diet will make their poo taste bad (like it doesn't already taste bad?????), and they will not eat it anymore. Learned about this on "It's Me or the Dog".

| What kind of food are you feeding your dogs? Sometimes a poor diet causes this behavior. |

| this is very common with puppies...fresh pineapple does the trick, meat tendorizer does it to, however it will not be a permanent thing.

| Someone told me to try Solid Gold S.E.P. - they said it worked for them. I haven't got any or tried it yet, because I'm not sure she is actually eating it...so I'm watching her like a hawk!

| Been there! My sweetie was doing the same thing..THEN wanting to give kisses! I found this on net and I think I prob was over-feeding cause I could see food particles in her poo...Nothing worse than seeing her munching happily and seeing big smear marks on the floor! Coprophagia This is the 'proper' name for stool eating, and it is in fact a normal canine behavior. A momma dog keeps her nest/den clean by eating the feces of her young puppies. As they pups grow, they copy this behavior and try to 'help mom with the housework'! Poop eating seems perfectly normal to them. Although, once weaned and out of the nest, many puppies tend to stop this practice, others continue the habit even when they've moved to their 'forever homes'. Generally puppies will grow out of stool eating within a few weeks, but for some it can become a long-lasting pattern that leaves their owners scratching their head and sighing... "WHY does my dog eat poop?" Is it bad or dangerous if my dog eats feces? Generally speaking, coprophagia isn't dangerous, just unpleasant and 'icky'. This is especially true when your pup or dog just eats his own stool. BUT, if little Fido seems intent on snacking on every random poop he finds, or thinks 'kitty crunchies' from the cat litterbox are the best treats ever, then it can become hazardous to his health. Many of the most dangerous and contagious dog illnesses are transmitted through feces. If your pooch injests the poop of a sick dog, he could get very ill himself. The same applies to cat poop, plus cat litter isn't a great thing to be swallowing at the best of times! It can 'clump' together and cause an intestinal blockage, or at the very least make your puppy vomit. Parasites such as worms can also be transmitted through the ingestion of feces, that is not something you want for your puppy. What to do if your dog eats poop If the question 'why does my dog eat poop?' is often in your mind, there are a few things you can do to discourage/prevent your pup from taking part in his very own 'poop fest'. Try these options: Take a look at the dog food you use Be sure that you're feeding your pooch a high quality, nutritious diet. A good dog food is highly digestible and results in fewer stools, and those stools are definitely less attractive as potential snacks because they're not full of the undigested fillers and junk that cheaper, lower quality foods contain. Don't overfeed Watch that you don't give your pup too much food. Overfeeding can result in undigested dog food in his feces, which makes them smell and taste really good to Fido! Pick up the poop Scoop the poop from your yard promptly. Don't just leave it there and wait for the weekend (or whenever), to clean up. Do it on at least a daily basis. Use a leash Keep your pup on a leash when you take him out. If he's a dedicated stool eater use the leash even if he's just going 'potty' in the back yard. If he tries to nibble on his stool, tell him "NO" firmly and 'pop' or tug his leash as a correction. Redirect his interest right away with a treat or a game. Try the hot stuff! ( I don't have the heart for this one!) You can try pouring hot sauce (or something similar) onto the stool piles. It will make them a lot less appetizing to your puppy. Of course, if you're going to take the time and trouble to do this, it's just as easy to pick them up. Or try tenderizer Some people find that a bit of meat tenderizer sprinkled on their dogs' food can make the stools less palateable. Coprophagia deterrents/preventatives To eliminate the stool eating, there are a few simple but effective products available that can be added to your dogs food. Once the food containing these products has passed through Fidos' digestive system, the resulting feces are very unappealing! Try one of these to break your pups' nasty habit - All you need to do is just sprinkle For-bid on your dogs' food and his stools will be highly unpalatable which means he'll avoid eating them. Contains vegetable protein and sodium glutamate. Can also be used for cats, and horses. Solid Gold S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop) This all-natural product that you add to your dogs' food contains glutamic acid, which When mixed with stomach acids, makes the stool taste very bitter and nasty. .

| Thanks everyone who posted. Pineapple is enjoyed twice by the two of them...for-bid did not work...vet stuff did not work...dog food changes for very nutritious food did not work...may be overfeeding or meat tenderizer, I will try these next. Zoe is at vet's overnight and had lots of blood work done and is fine...hopefully we can break this bad habit! |

| they say a dog eats his poop when the food was not completely digested. So if the dog eats too fast, it's basically not digesting. So,it comes out...like it went in. If you find your babies to eat quickly, handfeed them a few pieces at a time.

| Good idea. Today the vet said that forbid has to be put on food twice a day for five days. I ws only using it once a day. I will try smaller amounts of food slowly eated twice a day and see what happens. |

| My baby does the same thing. The pineapple didn't work very well for her. Could I sprinkle the tenderizer on the dry kibble I feed her. I free feed them so they all will get the tenderizer also. COCO PEBBLES TRIXIE |

| I noticed that Suri plays with her poo at times. She will pick it up and throw it around. I am not sure if she eats it though... I wonder if these methods would work.

| potty training It took me 11 months with my little girl. She seemed to do well and then she would forget and pee anywhere (loves carpet). I have dark hardwood and havenot seen any pee spots for two weeks now so I think We have learned what outside is for (not to snack on poo or to dig under the fence). She is a lot of fun and I would not trade her for anything! |
