Why are yorkies only considered "girl" dogs? My BF's brother made the comment that he had a "girlie" dog... now Dan (my bf) was the one who wanted a yorkie and the one who went out and found it (and who snoops over my shoulder as I'm on this site lol :D) and Dan is most definitely NOT a female lol. Why are yorkies considered only girlie dogs? |

Hi Dan!! Don't be shy..you KNOW you want to join YT too!! LoL My husband and I use to have a German Shepard(lived 11 yrs) and a Siberian Husky (lived 13 yrs) ....and now we have our little Pasquale (my choice). He definitely was against getting a yorkie...cause he thought the same thing as your brother. Now he tells everyone he's the "coolest" dog he's ever had. In fact, right now he's on the couch making baby noises to the dog...shhh dont tell him i told you all that LoL Once your brother realizes what a cool dog yorkies are..he'll probably want one too!! |

He says hi too :) |
I think it's like "little man syndrome" because the dogs are small and have long hair that needs to be brushed all the time they deem them girl dogs. My husband used to have boxers and he hated duke when we first met but now he loves little dogs, or at least Yorkies, because they have smaller poop to pick up and it's easier to just put them in the car and go:p. But he also gets scared of hurting them if he plays too rough. |
Probably cuz alot of people like to dress up their females and males! And put bows on them!! However my hubby used to be a "big" dog person...and thought that Daizy was "my" dog....WELL now he just ADORES both my girls and even tries to call Tulip HIS!!! hehe I don't think there is a GUY out there that can resist a yorkie...they can try..but it doesn't take long to win them over...it's the power of the yorkie!! lol |
Have to agree with Wabbit (Tam?), there's not a guy that can resist a Yorkie. DJ and Harley took care of that in first couple of days in their brief stay with us. |
Cause some men are self-conscious and to concerned about what others might think of them. :) |

I don't think they are! I was just checking out all the male celebrity Yorkie owners. There's Orlando Bloom, Bruce Willis, Donnie Osmond, and Justin Timberlake just to name a few. My husband is so in love with Missy that he tries to claim her as HIS when friends come over. We battle over this one, that's MY girl :p |
Good taste Justin!!! I didn't know Justin Timberlake had a yorkie!!! Now I know that we have so much in common I might make my move:D - move over Jessica Biel.........better not tell DH:rolleyes: xxx xxx |
I think because they are small and beautiful and we like to dress them up they cannot be "guy" dogs. My Husband takes Bridgette with him a lot but he always says "if someone asks, you made me bring her." I also dress her up all the time and he will refuse to hold her little pink leash. He also has a picture of her in his tood box at work. If anyone asks, he claims "it's my wife's dog." And she sleeps on his pillow every night. But he will never admit this to any of this to "the guys." Here's another thing he will NEVER tell you. He chose Bridgette! I'm going to copy the arrival story of my Dogster page: Mom thought maybe she should write something about me since I have been here quite a while yet and still do not have a diary! I was "rescued" in august of this year (2007)! Momma had been walking through the flea market! First big trip without my human sister! Anyway momma spotted my old owner! She had lots of dogs! Momma HAD to stop her to say hi to all the babies! She had an adult Pekingese along with one of her babies! Two Pomeranian puppies no momma! And a Doxin! She never did spot me until my old owner pulled me out from under the stroller the little cargo hold spot! Dad's first words were "WOW she beautiful!" The lady mentioned they were all for sale! Mommas heart skipped a beat! But she knew in her heart the buying a dog was just wrong when there are so so so many homeless babies out there! Momma got the lady's number because she said she wanted her human daughter to come see all the puppies! When momma did come to see us ( all the doggies) Momma found out the male Pomeranian puppy and the doxin had died over the weekend! "WHAT!?!" Momma exclaimed! The baby pekingese was already "sold!" So they sat there a while and played with us! Taylor my momma's human daughter loved the other Pomeranian! Momma fell head over heals for the momma pekingese and daddy fell for me! She wanted an obscene amount of money for all of us! My new family finally decided it wouldn't be right to buy! And decided to leave to go look at some shelters! Momma's gonna take over - We got in the car I looked over at my husband and I saw tears in his eyes! And let me tell you he is a manly man that never happens! The only other time in my life I had seen that Is when my daughter was born! We decided we just couldn't pick one! We gave the BYB a "down payment" and told her we'd be back in two weeks as agreed to pick up our babies (the Yorkie and the pekingese) and pay the remaining balance! Since we were in the process of moving and didn't want to bring them in on all this! Anyway I went home to dream every night about my future babies! Only to get a message one morning! " I'm so sorry I sold Maggie (the Pekingese) I know you were in love with her but someone offered me more money and could take her today!" I know I should have stopped right there and got away from that BYB!But man am I glad we didn't! I was absolutely devastated! I went straight to her house in tears and told her I would pay the rest for the Yorkie and take her NOW!" We found a number of things about her gruesome past in that time! Her first owner was her mothers breeder! They tried to breed my Bridgette with only one successful breed only to have her babies ripped away from her at 6 weeks old! Then she was "sold" to this lady because the breeder decided she had more dogs than she could handle along with her life long partner another Yorkie named "Buddy." Who would was poisoned about a month after they moved in with the new owner do to a disgruntled neighbor! Then this lady bred her she had three puppies and not one made it! How horrifying of an experience for her! We decided we wanted her NOW and thought she needed rescuing just as much as any dog in a pound if not more! She had to fight (Bridgette fight HA) all the other dogs over ONE bowl of food! They agreed to get her for us and went to find her! They couldn't... only eventually hiding under one of the beds cowering in fear! She signed over her papers (AKC) and we took off! First stop was the vet for a health check up! Only to my surprise she was fine just needed a bath, some dematting, her nails trimmed, some mouth wash, and some food! And some serious flea medicine! All routine care this lady didn't see necessary! We had her nails trimmed some doggy mouth wash for her terrible breath and some heartworm and flea medication. We got all her vaccines since the "breeder" didn't have any records of any vaccines. When we got home we finally got a chance to get a good look at her! She was indeed beautiful! But she was a pitiful excuse for a pet! She was so thin you could see and feel all her bones! Her hair smelled terrible and was in terrible matts! I gave her her first bath that night and her hair fell out in clumps! We dried her up, commed out all the remaining matts and gave her lots of kisses and gave her some food! She looked at us like she had never seen food in her life and ate two and a half bowls! Wow! For a 3 1/2 lb dog that's A LOT! The BYB also told us she did not like any treats! HA! That's a laugh! She has loved just about every treat we have ever given her! She obviously never tried giving her any treats! She seemed to be in high heaven just to be able to be loved have all the food She needs and be clean! We actaully bumped into that BYB at a pet store about a week later! Bridgette had since been professionally groomed, had her teeth cleaned and looked like a different dog. She said "Is that Bridgette?" I handed Bridgette to her to hold her. Bridgette cried and cowered in her arms lunging to get back in mine. That makes me wonder what tramua she must have experienced with that lady! She is just the sweetest little girl ever! All she wants is to have her belly rubbed all day long! She gained a pound and a half and is quite chubby now! She will never again have to worry about fighting for her food she will not be neglected and mistreated! I don't think she has or will ever forget about us coming to rescue her! She truly is a daddy's girl! She has found her forever home and I know she will have a good happy healthy life here! But to this day he will never admit Bridgette was his choice! It's just a macho thing, unless it's a big dog "it's not manly" to a man. My dogster page is: Dog profile for ♥Bridgette♥, a female Yorkshire Terrier And my son Teddy's: Dog profile for ♥Teddy♥, a male Yorkshire Terrier |
My husband also calls Walker my dog. BUT the single soldiers at the barracks LOVE him. who'da thunk. I thought we were going to be picked on for buying a "rat dog" but unless i make weekly visits to visit all the manly men soldiers I get obnoxious phone calls asking the whereabouts of Walker. I must sat though, I was "reprimanded" for "emasculating my dog" when he had a ponytail in while he was wearing his cone.:) Seriously i didn't think that a male soldier would know the word emasculate;) they also show up at my doorstep with all their cop gear on to "make sure i am taking proper care of my men" seriously?! |
Your babies are beautiful. As for yorkies being for girls! Nah! Find a man with a small dog & you'll find a man with a soft & kind heart. My husband totes our 2 yorkies anywhere they want to go. My brother-in-law is 6'4" & is completley daffy over their 4.5# rescue yorkie. Neither of these men have any problem letting people know that these are their 'kids' & they love them. |
My Husband takes Biggie everywhere and even has pics of him on his desk at work. My guess is if we had a girl that was all dressed up all the time in dresses he might be a little more embarrassed about taking the little one everywhere. |
maybe cause men don't want to put up with DRAMA QUEENS ?? they already have us women for that :D (not me of course ...but I do know some) :p |

Funny you know how our dogs get jealous well if some men only knew how much they were alike...LOL.. Cause I know my bro is just jealous of the attention my baby gets. |

Anyone that thinks they are girlie dog has never been around these small bodied, rottweiler minded dogs..lol my husband used to think that too. When we fisrt got one he said I want a DOG that I can walk and not be embarassed......They walk every evening now and even have Yorkie friends they visit along the way..He always says, "Mac lets go see your fat girlfriend!"...I'm trying to teach him not to be RUDE and say "lets go see your "TeaPot girlfriend" |
Oh oh....here's a good retort! Next time 'bro' says this BF should look him straight in the eye & say "Hey I'm secure with my masculinity & don't need a big dog to project that I am a MAN! Yep..that should shut him up nicely!:aimeeyork |

Yorkies are great dogs! The best dogs! Guys are just worried that they don't look as tough if they get a Yorkie cause they are cute & small.....I don't know about you guys, but my Rocky is one tough puppy! And when he growls & barks, it's kind of scary! LOL |
Many people judge our little ones because of their size I think. Duke is a tough cookie for his 5.5lbs self. He sure melts the hearts of everyone he meets but would bark to protect his mama too if he needs to. I'm seeing someone who thought Duke is too small but now loves to play with Duke and even baths Duke for me too :) |
Maybe because more women or married people own them |
I dunno, but my dad is definitely the one who talked me into getting a yorkie. He just can't stand when I put clothes on the dog. :D |

Eh... who cares My Mike and Zach will growl at anybody :D |
only immature boys think small dogs are 'girly dogs'. You bf is obviously a very mature loving MAN! :) |
Guys are changing their point of view realizing that Yorkies are "chick" magnets. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rried-but.html DWs & GFs be alert to the signs. |
