Am I COBBY or plain CHUBBY? 1 Attachment(s) I FIRST WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE NICE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD! Although the board has some problems like any other, the good outweighs the bad by far!! I finally got this little guy to stay still long enough to take a side shot .. I keep asking if he's too chunky (vet said he was and I guess it's kind of bothering me) but he also said he was a pretty small yorkie, so I am wondering if maybe he is just "cobby" short and kind of thick in build, maybe that is why he thought he was chubby? I am new to Yorkie's and many have said he looks cobby, I really didn't have any idea what that meant, however, after researching a bit he does appear cobby to me.. what do you guys think? He only eats 1/2 cup of kibble a day so I don't think he can be overweight.. Baby Fat at the very Most! I DO KNOW THIS MUCH, he is a STINKER! and SPOILED ROTTEN! Guess that would be my fault lol.. he is learning to sit though which means he's pretty darn smart the little boog! Gucci is 12 weeks by the way |
:wavey: Welcome! :) - it's hard to tell from pictures, but he doesnt look overweight to me  but i guess you would have to take his weight, mesurements, etc. into account.. ? i dont know... :) - what are you feeding him?? that could have alot to do with it.. if there are fillers, by-products, even some grains in his food.. that could have alot to do with it.. he could be eating the same amount of 2 different foods and have a different result. ;) he looks cute to me.. :) |
lol either way he is super cute!!! |
His build reminds me of my Daisy. I'm not familiar with the term cobby so I'm hoping to learn more about it. Thanks. |

I am feeding EUKANUBA PUPPY for Small breeds and he has Cheerios for training treats ( plain cheerios ) nothing else, he was getting nutri-cal in the a.m but I've cut that out unless I feel he has had a stressful trip or long day. Is Eukanuba a good food or should I go with something like EVO? Tx Thank you I think he's cute either way too :D |

Just wanted to say there is no such thing as an overweight puppy, Puppies are suppose to be chubby. |
he's just adorable is all I can say...:) |
BrowniesMom622- that makes me feel better! the vet is a very good one and absolutely great with my baby but I thought he was maybe wrong on this one too!! He will be fine and healthy so long as he doesn't stay "Chubby" when he's older right? I've heard that it puts stress on the bones of yorkies if they are overweight and can cause health problems, is that correct? phfgkl - thank you so much, you know how I feel about your little baby she is so adorable!! |

if you do a search on here, on food, you will find a ton of info. ;) eukanuba is not known to be a premium kibble.. so you may want to check that out.. and see about changing.. ;) we have given cheerios to Avie, since she was a baby and continue to give them to both girls! :) we never gave nutrical to Avie on a daily basis.. we had it on hand and would only give it to her, if needed(if she wasn't eating, etc.) with Gemma we gave her nutrical daily when we first brought her home (because she was so little) and then slowly stopped giving it to her ;) But, Cheerios were a great training treat for us! EVO is a great kibble.. it is a VERY high protein food.. so you should slowly introduce it to him... since he is just a puppy (really you should do this with any food, though ;)) i would search & research some of the food threads.. and go from there.. we currently feed our girls.. Ziwi Peak (air dried & canned) Natural Range Of Premium Pet-food Products - Ziwipeak - Natural New Zealand Pet Nutrition Nature's Variety Instinct Canned & RAW medallions Product Choices For My Dog | Nature's Variety (we only leave the kibble out, so it is available to them in case they get hungry.. but their main diet is what i posted above! ;)) the kibble we leave out for them right now is either Nature's Variety or INNOVA/EVO.. let me know if you have any questions.. :heart to |

Yes your right ,overweight as an adult is bad But puppies have so much energy they need it. |
Averyxo - Thank you for all of the helpful information! I will definately go look in the food section and see what I can find, I feed my pitbulls INNOVA EVO RED MEAT which is very HIGH in protein... so that is why I was considering something along the lines of EVO for the baby but the breeder had him on Eukanuba and recommended it for him so I thought maybe that was what he was supposed to have. He was on the nutri-cal initally because he was so small when we got him, he was only 1 lb 3 oz at 9 weeks I don't know what happened but he BALOONED! I am starting to wonder if maybe he wasn't eating much at his previous place .. he was still chubby looking when he was little though so I don't really know... he sure has gained a lot though lol THANK YOU AGAIN!! |
He might just be more squarely built. Can you feel his ribs? You should be able to feel his ribs. |
well regardless your baby is adorable and i am also a believer that a chubby puppy is good :D they run around so much they need their energy...my bentley was such a chub (and he is considered cobby and he had thick, gorgeous puppy hair) and he looked ginormous :D i think at 3 or 4 weeks he was over 1.5 lbs ... he actually had ROLLS on his arms and legs and a double chin ... he grew out of it though and stands now (over a year old) at a shade over 3 lbs i think your puppy looks healthy and beautiful! |

good to hear you know about this food.. ;) EVO has small bites (which we feed ;)) let me know how it goes.. ;) i think your baby is just going through a little growth spurt... every yorkie grows differently, at different times! ;) |
I've been comparing Innova vs Innova EVO and have found that EVO is too rich in protein and fat levels for pet dogs. It is suggested for working dogs, herding dogs, etc. You should not feed the puppy kind to puppies, just the adult kind. You should get the small bites. I read a lot of peoples experiences and the EVO they had much firmer stools than with regular Innova. I probably would steer clear from EVO when Gucci is a puppy but possibly switch to it when he is 10 months or older. I'm not sure which kind I'm going to feed but I probably will feed EVO. Max is really active so he gets a lot of exercise (three 1-1.5 mile walks/runs a day and a trip to the park). I just found this: "The only caution we would make on this food is that the high protein and calcium content may make it suitable for adult dogs only, particularly in the case of large breeds."- Dog Food Reviews - Innova EVO (Small bites) - Powered by ReviewPost That's what I read other places. In this case, I would research a bit about different dog foods and see what % levels should be given to puppies and find a grain free dog food for Gucci. I think regular Innova has high protein levels too, but I think it is a bit better for puppies. Just don't give the puppy kind because puppies should not be encouraged to grow too fast for their bones. That is what I would do because of what I have read but you can do whatever. The concern was mainly for larger breeds. Let me know if you need anymore help. Vanessa |

So Innova puppy or just Innova small bites for GUCCI? I am still a little confused and the food and health section has SO MUCH I don't know what to choose lol THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE KIND REPLIES! you have all made me feel so much better, I just want to make sure I am doing what is best for my little guy healthwise!! |
He is cute with baby pudge. I wouldn't worry about it... just exercise him and feed him the proper amount. He'll grow and his body will "fill in" his weight. He doesn't look overweight to me. Just cute :D |
I don't think he looks chubby at all! |
He's def. cobby. He's adorable too! :) |
So I opted to go with Innova Puppy, Only concern is that the bites are a bit large for him... does anyone think this will be a problem or have you had experience with your yorkie's handling this fine? Thanks to everyone for all the replies too!! |
I really do not know but I do know that he is a cutie !!!!:D |
Your puppy is cute! How old is he now? I have heard of the "cobby" look and usually it is given to describe a square and short look. |

LilMissy - Thank you! you are always so nice to us Sookie - Glad to hear that, his vet had made me worry I was possibley doing something wrong with him lol but I then started realizing people were saying he looked cobby (thought it was bad so I researched it lol) I then noticed that may be why he looks chubby. Thank you for the reply. |

Your puppy is a doll and honestly, the cobby build is the way that you want a Yorkie to be built. I always thought that my Livi was super square but not compared to Isabeau. I love the way that these guys with the square bodies look. Isabeau's legs are even short...is this how Gucci is? Tammy |
Your puppy is darling, just as he should be! You're correct that it's bad for an adult dog to be overweight. As an adult, you should be able to run your hand down his side and be able to feel his ribs. But even if he is carrying a couple ounces right now, he can grow out of it, just like a human baby. Especially if he is active, which you say he is. |
