Flea/Tick/Heartworm Medication I was wondering what flea/tick medication is most effective and most gentle on your furbaby? Also, do you give your furbaby heartworm medication independently from their flea/tick medication or do you use something like Revolution that has both combined? |
My three little ones. I give my dogs flea medication during the flea season. I am not thrilled with the high prices of Advantage, which I use, and its effectiveness. I give heartworm all year round. They are expensive little critters but well worth it. I also feed them Life's Abundance, which I have sent from Fla. Anybody else feeding them that brand? Judy |
Ellie gets Interceptor for heartworm 8-9 months a year. We don't use anything for fleas and ticks. Personally, I would not use Revolution. |
I've used Revolution on all my babies so far and haven't had any problems with it at all. Never a flea, tick, mite, or worm in my girls;) |

i use sentinel year round-it is heartworm preventative but is also supposed to prevent flea larvae. It doesn't kill/stop adult fleas from biting though, so in flea season, I use frontline too. They are only outside for walks but I am just really paranoid. My vet recommended this. I can get a 6 month supply of both for around $100.00 |
Juicy gets Interceptor for heartworm and Advantage for fleas. :) |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we live in a place where there are no mosquitoes, I don't have to worry about heartworm, right? No heartworm meds necessary? But if me and my pup go back to the midwest where there are mosquitoes to visit my family, I'll start him on heartworm medicine, and maybe tick medicine, etc. How long should I wait for that stuff to kick in and become effective? Hahaha, I just talked to my vet and he said that mosquitoes are a lot more rare here, but they're here nonetheless. So he recommended Interceptor, and that's what I got. It's for dogs 2-10lbs, and protects against heartworm, hookworm, roundworms and whipworms (whatever exactly all those are). Hope it's good. :-) Lauren |
What part of NV are you in? I don't worry about heartworm/mosquitoes here in Vegas. But if you plan to go up to the mountains, you might want to ask your vet about the lyme vaccine. |
