Flea/Tick/Heartworm Medication I was wondering what flea/tick medication is most effective and most gentle on your furbaby? Also, do you give your furbaby heartworm medication independently from their flea/tick medication or do you use something like Revolution that has both combined? |
My three little ones. I give my dogs flea medication during the flea season. I am not thrilled with the high prices of Advantage, which I use, and its effectiveness. I give heartworm all year round. They are expensive little critters but well worth it. I also feed them Life's Abundance, which I have sent from Fla. Anybody else feeding them that brand? Judy |
Ellie gets Interceptor for heartworm 8-9 months a year. We don't use anything for fleas and ticks. Personally, I would not use Revolution. |
I've used Revolution on all my babies so far and haven't had any problems with it at all. Never a flea, tick, mite, or worm in my girls;) |

I use heartquard. I dont use flea preventative. I used to use revolution before I heard dogs were getting heartworm while on it |
i use sentinel year round-it is heartworm preventative but is also supposed to prevent flea larvae. It doesn't kill/stop adult fleas from biting though, so in flea season, I use frontline too. They are only outside for walks but I am just really paranoid. My vet recommended this. I can get a 6 month supply of both for around $100.00 |
Juicy gets Interceptor for heartworm and Advantage for fleas. :) |

Sentinel & Interceptor Are The Safest Heartworm Preventatives | KeoB.com Since we don't know how many dogs are on Revolution compared to drugs like Heartgard, we really can't say "for sure" that there is a higher death rate just by this article but, in my opinion, Heartgard and possibly even Interceptor have been around for longer (so probably more popular?) with less deaths a year. My guess would be more people use Heartgard than Revolution and less deaths have been reported, so I really don't like Revolution. I have read at least twice (I think it was right on Yorkie Talk) about people saying they have heard of some dogs getting heartworms even while on this. I mean, it happens with all these products but I've heard more about it with this one. I use Interceptor. Sentinel is Interceptor with Program to stop fleas from reproducting. I think they are both reasonably safe for small dogs but all dogs are different. Heartgard is okay also (as okay as pesticides can be:rolleyes:). |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we live in a place where there are no mosquitoes, I don't have to worry about heartworm, right? No heartworm meds necessary? But if me and my pup go back to the midwest where there are mosquitoes to visit my family, I'll start him on heartworm medicine, and maybe tick medicine, etc. How long should I wait for that stuff to kick in and become effective? Thank you, Lauren |
Hahaha, I just talked to my vet and he said that mosquitoes are a lot more rare here, but they're here nonetheless. So he recommended Interceptor, and that's what I got. It's for dogs 2-10lbs, and protects against heartworm, hookworm, roundworms and whipworms (whatever exactly all those are). Hope it's good. :-) Lauren |
What part of NV are you in? I don't worry about heartworm/mosquitoes here in Vegas. But if you plan to go up to the mountains, you might want to ask your vet about the lyme vaccine. |
lucyaboo, thank you for your reply! :-) We live in Pahrump... is that considered "up into the mountains?" This is our first dog, so we are very much relying on our vet and people here on YT. LOL, one of the many reasons we moved here (just a few weeks ago) was that we heard there were no mosquitoes here - I hate them, they just love to eat on me. But the vet convinced us... he said that it's more rare, but some dogs do report cases of heartworm here each year even if they've never left the area. I suppose it's not too big of a deal hopefully though, because the meds only cost like $50 for a whole year's supply. Not a bad deal so far as I can tell, knowing what my mom pays for her dog's yearly supply in Ohio. Please, if there's anything else that might be helpful for us to know that's southern Nevada-specific, tell me! Shoot, just go ahead and pipe up about anything, even if it's not Nevada-specific. I want so badly to be a good mom to this new pup! He's not a purebred pup, but he's mostly Yorkie. Thank you again, Lauren |
Welcome to Yorkietalk & Nevada :) I think Pahrump is simular to Vegas as far as humidity levels & mosquitoes. It gets alittle colder in Pahrump though, and snows more. You are in a valley with mountains around you, just like Vegas. Pahrump elevations ranges 2550 to 2750 ft above sea level & Vegas elevations is around 2030 ft or so I know what you mean, I was in Florida for a short time in 1995 and I had to use Off spray before I could take the dogs out to potty - LOL. It was bad. The pups I had then (in FL) were on all the necessary medications to keep them safe. It won't hurt your pup being on heartworm meds, like your vet said. I have one yorkie & one mixed yorkie/doxie. What is your pup mixed with? |
