| Is this a bad idea? trixie will be 4 years old on the 26th this month.. We've had her about a month now and still potty training her. She has good days and bad days of coruse which is expected... But Im thinking about trying to crate train her.. of course I have to make my own crate and all but it should be okay and all, but do yall think it would be okay to do this for her? Since we've had her for a month or so now and shes 4 years old? (she is a puppymill rescue-used for breeding only before, so I dont want ti to bring back bad memories, either, kwim?)

| I'm not too sure. I am thinking like you, that it might bring back bad memories. Have you thought about using x-pens or even designating an area for her like the laundry room instead? I would be hesitant to lock her in a crate seeing what type of background she's come from. But that's just my opinion. Let's see what everyone else has to say.

| Thanks yeah Im kinda hesitant at it and all... Sooo another question.. if I want her to know she is okay in it and all.. can I move the crate/box at all? (Im currely poor and made one of my own out of a box..lol). Is there a certain place that is better for the crates to be at? is it okay to move it from one room or the other? I've had her in it for maybe 15 mins now and she just stands up and looks at me.. kinda shaking.. so it doesnt last long.

| Our male Shiloh was in a 3x3 wire kennel for the first year of his life. We worried about the same thing when we brought him home but he actually runs in it at bedtime and lays right down. Our kennel is 4x4 and very nice so to him its probably like sleeping at a four star hotel. Just make it as pleasant for her as possible. Keep us posted. |

| I think it is great that you are giving this poor dog a great new loving home I don't have any idea how to answer your question though, since i have no experience in training a rescue. |

I'm assuming she's spayed. You might be entirely surprised at how well she would adapt to a crate. I know many pet Yorkie owners think it's the worst thing in the world, but I would put it in the Yorkie Bill of Rights as Right #1 - A place of their own. She might find it totally comforting to have her own den. I think it would be terribly difficult to try and train her without one. Ditto with the exercise pen. A very good tool. Also, she probably doesn't have any "bad" memories of the puppy mill. It's what she was used to. Although her circumstances are much better now in terms of her health and well being, it will take a bit for her to become accustomed to the new routine. Nothing's been expected of her before. I look forward to hearing how she progresses. Be patient. Her whole life she's just been going whenever she had to with no reason to hold it. Once she figures it out, she'll be happy to do what pleases you. CJ | |
