| Blood when brushing teeth? Hi, I brush Padre's teeth about 3-4 times per week. I aim for a daily brush and average out to be about 3-4 times per week. Anyway, his breath has been pretty smelly and I've noticed that there is a small amount of blood on the toothbrush when I brush the right side of his teeth lately. Does anyone know if this could be alarming or not? He had a small amount of blood on the toothbrush when we first started brushing his teeth about 6 months ago.....I just want to make sure he doesn't need a full dental exam, thank you!!!! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Are you using a doggie toothpaste? I've heard you're not supposed to use the human variety. Other than that, I'm not sure what would be causing it. Also, how old is he?

| Hi, Padre is 3 years old and I'm using a vanilla-mint toothpaste that the vet told me to use. It might not be a big deal--just sensitive gums on that side but I wanted to double check. Thanks! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This is bad, and means that the dog needs a teeth cleaning, it sounds like gingivitis, and your dog could lose his teeth if the tartar isn't removed; tartar causes the gums to swell and bleed if not removed. I've been using Petzlife, and it's said to prevent and remove tartar, but I don't know how advanced your dogs problem is. The Petzlife gel is said to soften tartar, and you then brush it away with your normal tooth brushing. You don't brush with Petzlife, but use it at a separate time. Here's the Petzlife site. PetzLife Products Inc - Products For a Healthier Pet I also give Joey Bully sticks, as this helps scrapes the tooth surface while chewing.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | You could be brushing too hard on his gums. sometimes when i brush London's teeth really fast cause she moves so much they bleed a little and i cant see where im brushing. It's the toothbrush i use, which is a baby one, i just put water to wash it away.

It's a chewing stick made from beef tendon, or (bull penis), they are dried, and are 100% digestible so you don't have to worry about intestinal blockage like you do with raw hides. Here's a link: Merrick Pet Foods - Dog Treats I got mine on e-bay, but it's hit and miss there.

| Thank you for all of your responses! I made an appointment with the vet to get his teeth checked and maybe sign up for a dental cleaning if the vet thinks it's time. We'll see! Now I'm nervous about the cleaning and anesthesia bit..... |

Oh wow, that's tiny, I use the 6 inch for Joey, he's over 5 pounds, I guess you could saw them in half, but they're hard. I wonder if the Merrick flossies would be better for such a tiny dog. Here's a picture of them. They are made the same way, but they are thinner.Merrick 6-8" Flossies Treats: 10 pack - eBay (item 110293737971 end time Oct-27-08 14:02:36 PDT)

| Merrick Flossies I don't know if I'm too late to add anything to this post but I have to agree with Nancy re: Merrick. I've tried to give Maggie (7 lbs) bully sticks and wishbones but she won't touch them...give her a flossie and she bolts and enjoys it with unbelievable joy under the chair in the living room so no one bothers her She absolutely loves them and noticed her teeth are sooo pearly white and tarter free after I started giving her these!
