| Help....Husband never owned a dog before Hi- My husband and I purchased a Yorkshire Terrier (Obi) a month and a half ago and he is having a hard time adjusting to life with a dog. He gets easily frustrated and is impatient when Obi misbehaves. I tell him to just put him in his crate when he needs a break from him, but unfortunately he has started barking non-stop if he's in his crate when we're home (he used to be just fine). Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this situation? I've tried everything I can think of, but am worried that my husband has had enough. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Have you tried covering the crate with a blanket when you want him to be quiet? It used to work for Cooper. My husband never had inside dogs, and he was impatient with Baxter at first. What helped was having my husband help me teach him some basic obedience. Once he was able to see how intelligent Baxter was, he took over, because he wanted to claim HE taught him everything! |

| Bet he's never had a child either and I hope if he ever has a child, he doesn't treat it the way he's treating the dog. Tell him the puppy is a little soul with the exact same feelings, wants and desires as any human. Tell him it's his "baby" and he needs to practice. If he insists the dog has to go........well if it were me.........I'd pack "his" bags. Sorry for being so blunt, but I personally could not, would not live with anyone who doesn't love dogs.

| You have to be very careful how you use a crate, they can be a very helpful tool but should never be used as punishment. It does take time to train a puppy its not unlike having a baby in the house (I should know I have 4 children and three dogs!) How big is his crate? I always use a good size one that has enough space for bed, bowls and pee paper.Maybe you could start by putting Obi in the crate for short periods of time at the same times every day so he begins to expect it and knows it won't be long. Maybe give him a fave toy/chew or treat when you put him in so he looks forward to it.Also feed him his meals in there if it is big enough or get him a pen instead of a crate. As for the barking I use the term "HUSHHH!" emphisize the "SHHH" none of my dogs are yappers not even my Yorkie Mika. It took a few weeks but she soon understood, when she yapped I used "HUSHHH" and then she would be ignored until she stopped, once she was distracted I told her she was a good girl and gave her a fuss!. Now she barely barks and if she does I only need to look at her and she stops instantly and sits at my feet wagging her tail! I really hope you and hubby can hang on in there, I know it must be hard for you getting agro from him, but remind him that Obi is your baby and he will grow up and settle down much quicker than a skinkidGood luck
