Yorkie vs Silky: 2 Different Breeds? :aimeeyorkI spoke with someone today that has two yorkies. One is black and brown and the other one is more light brown and grey. She told me that the light brown and grey one is considered a Silky because of the coloring??!! I have 3 Pure Bred Yorkshire Terriers and one of them is Mostly Light Brown. I thought that a Silky was a separate breed, just closely related to the Yorkshire Terrier? I really do not believe that my Lily is a Silky because of her lighter coloring?? If anyone can help me understand this please do!:aimeeyork |
A Silky is a separate breed that were from different dog breeds. I believe that the Silky came from Australia. You are right. |
Maybe see meant silky because of the hair texture. There is a whole other breed called silky terrier. But that's probably not what she meant. Yorkies has different hair texture some are cottony, some are silky, some are woolly. |
My Chewy is actually a Silky Terrier, not a Yorkshire Terrier. Silky's are a mix between a Yorkie and an Australian Terrier. My baby used to have brown and black hair. Now as an adult it is light brown and gray. I heard the difference between a Silky and a Yorkie is that a Silky has a longer face and longer body??? They look the same to me though, I can't tell the difference. I've seen plenty of Yorkies that I think look just like Chewy. |
Silkies are a totally different breed and color has nothing to do with it. silky terriers are a little larger, have a longer, larger snout and the tail set is lower than on a yorkie. But they look so much alike that some people don't know the difference. |
history - "Although his ancestry is British, the Australian Silky Terrier proudly bears the label "Made in Australia", for it was in Sydney that the breed was first developed. Believed to be basically a cross between the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier, the Silky was bred to fill the need for a small terrier which would be suited to life in a small house or cottage but, at the same time, would be effective in hunting and killing domestic rodents." googled silky pic below... also, here's the akc standard description: American Kennel Club - Silky Terrier i read somewhere else that, apart from the snout and size coat length also distinguishes silky and yorkie. silky's hair will grow long, but not all the way to the floor |

some good info!! |
I was told today that my Yorkie is a Silky....she was basing that on his coloring (tan, black, silver) she said the silver was what made him a Silky. I disagree... From the research I have done online I have learned.... Silky is 7+ lbs, pointy features, longer body than tall, sturdy build, shorter coat Yorkie is smaller (up to 7 lbs), more round features, square built, small boned, long coat My Daxter is a Yorkie! |
:goodpost::goodpost::goodpost: I have one of each. Quote:

I think its funny that someone told you he was a silky because of his color! Tan, black and silver are very common for yorkies. That just strikes me funny in the same way that someone asking me if I have a "teacup or regular" yorkie does. I just have to remind myself that not everyone is aware of breed specifications or what the standard is. |

Well I have to agree you definately have a Yorkie, i'm from Australia and I see Silkys alot, your girl has a really cute pixie face, silkys are a lot sturdier. She is absolutely precious!!! |

I think she was referring to hair texture. Silky coated yorkies typically have a metallic looking hair that is sometimes described as gunmetal or charcoal grey. This is usally referred to as "blue, but it actually more charcoal. Cotton coats are typically a black black. This is the coloring on the saddle of the dog. The second color she gave you is the face coloring, and this can range from beige to rich gold. |
My neighbor has a Silky, yes she looks a lot like Sophie Kate but there are some big differences. 1, her nose is different, longer and pointed. 2, Her body is longer. A lot of time my neighbor gets asked if her Silky is a Yorkie and she always corrects them. Her Silky is a very cool dog, smarter than any dog I have ever met and she is comical. |
2 Attachment(s) This is a picture of my daughter and her Silky second is of our Yorkie there is quite a big difference in the breeds The Silky is a year old and Our Yorkie is 6 monts. Petey weighs 9 lbs and Laddy 2lb 9 oz |

Oh my god....I think my Bryan is a silky..when I gothim he was 3lbs ...sunday will be a year and he his now 13lbs butb if you look at him he looks skinny but he's built like a brick _hit house...he's very long but low to the groung is hair is beige in his face and legs and his body is a charcol grey...whatdo you guys think? |
3 Attachment(s) I was told by my groomer that Jackson looked like a Silky. I really don't know the difference. I really could care less if he is or isn't. But to me, he personally looks like a Yorkie. He's just a "poorly bred" Yorkie if you want to call him that. He's 13 pounds at 6 months but I think his personality and face are ALL Yorkie! His body is maybe a bit on the long side and his tail is undocked but that's just because he didn't come from a reputable breeder. What do you think? |
4 Attachment(s) Okay, now y'all have me paranoid about my babies! They are larger than the average yorkie, and perhaps a bit longer... Do they look like silkies to you? Here they are at about 4.5 months. Chewy weighed 6.5 & Sophie weighed 5.5 then. |
Just because a yorkie may be out of standard does not mean it turns into another breed of dog. Un-informed people confuse them simply because of the size of the dog...and there are more differences than soley size. |
I think having a Silky would be just as awesome as having a Yorkie. Like I mentioned my nieghbors Silky is one of the coolest dogs I have ever met, she is smart and so comical - she entertains me constantly when I babysit her. Sophie Kate LOVES her, secretly I think Sophie Kate wants to be a Silky. |
2 Attachment(s) I found some pictures of both Mimi (the Silky) and Sophie Kate (my Yorkie) at about the same age. They both looks so much a like it is hard to tell what is what. I love Mimi's ears in this picture, we used to laugh at her and say they were like two dinner platter on top of her head. Thank goodness she grew into her ears. |
How can anyone tell them apart? From the pics you posted, I would assume both were yorkies. :aimeeyork |
go to American Kennel Club - akc.org you can look at pictures of yorkies and then silkies, there is a difference |

Thanks for these links....this was great. However, I think Sully may be a Silky. He has the longer body rather than boxy. Interesting. I hope we don't get evicted from YT for being imposters.. Every day is a school day on YT. |
I can definitely tell a difference from the AKC website. But I still say in the "everyday" world it would be extremely hard to tell a difference. Maybe it's just me, though. :p |
A silky has hair that feels very course to the touch..their hair will only grow to a few inches below the belly they stay gray on the face and not gold like yorkies. There really is quite a difference. I have never seen one with curly hair either. |
You are right. Silky's are usually larger in size and long. Two totally separate breeds. |
