So Silkies hair stays grey on their faces? I guessed I missed that part. My babies' mom & dad both had beautiful gold heads/faces. And after looking at more photos of slikies, I can see the longer snout. :) I'm just a slow learner... |
Yes it does. If you can find the thread on here with this years dog shows you can see some beautiful examples of silky's on there verses yorkies;) |

Silky is 7+ lbs, pointy features, longer body than tall, sturdy build, shorter coat Yorkie is smaller (up to 7 lbs), more round features, square built, small boned, long coat [/quote] My dog sounds more like a silky! How can a person tell! I could have a poorly bred but pure Yorkie, a Yorkie with a Silky past, or a Silky registered as a Yorkie. My Daisy is 7 months old, 8lbs 4 oz has a pretty long snout and a long body. She is just CKC registered by a "backyard breeder". I mean, how can you really know without DNA testing? |
I guess that would be the only way for you to know 100% but she looks like a yorkie to me. Doesnt look anything like the Silky's I know.;) I always felt like the name Silky was a misnomer for them because their hair feels very very course to the touch also. |

It is just that this is a common thread topic and when I read the AKC Silky Terrier description it really seems to describe my dog. Yorkies, because they are so popular and expensive are over bred without regard to the breed standard much of the time. I think at least half of us have dogs that don't fit the breed standard. When there is another breed that is so close in appearance to the Yorkshire Terrier how do we really know? The differences in the standards of the two breeds also seem to be the common ways that our Yorkies stray from the breed standard. (My dog: bigger, longer snout and longer body) That was my point. |
I would like to correct an incorrect statement about Silkies........a true correctly breed silky will have a TRUE silk coat. As with any breed, there are incorrect breedings but just as a correct yorkie has a silk (cool to the touch) coat......the same goes for silkies. I currently own a fair quality yorkie, a yorkie that is way out standard and three very nice show quality silkies including one that a have out at AKC shows as a special (championed at the age of one). |
If I can add more thing.......silkies should be gold and tan in the face - with their face gold and topnot tan/fawn....not grey. |
well going by the silky's my daughter owns and those of other friends all of which are akc registered the hair on their heads has stayed silver an on their chest also and the have longer sturdier bodies than most yorkies. And when I spok e of course hair I meant to the touch. It looks silky but does not feel silky like our yorkies does. |
I will try and post a link of silky's in this years dog show hope it works. YORKSHIRE TERRIER > Videos > Westminster Kennel Club It seem the hair on these dogs have turned gold on the head unlike those i know of but there is still a vast difference. |

Not sure why but maybe like I said in above post it has to do with age. All the ones I know are under 2 years old and their hair doesn't feel as silky to me or maybe I just haven't felt them right after baths. I am far from an expert on them just going by those I have been around. I am sure you all who own them know more about them than me. All that being said they are beautiful loving dogs. |

So, my baby is half yorkie and half silky...but technically, she could also be considered 3/4 yorkie and 1/4 australian terrier?!?!?! |
That post confused me somewhat also. If they are a yorkie mix how are they akc registered?? I was under the impression that they were a completely different breed. |

An incorrect coat will be warm when you touch it. AND Silkies that are correct in color do NOT have a courser coat they should have a coat like a yorkie but not as long.... Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
They are NOT a Yorkie mix. They are a purebred, AKC registered breed. |
Silky or Yorkshire i have to agree that it is hard to see the difference me and my husband was told twice yesterday while out with Harley that he was a silky because of his fur but the lady we bought him from said he is a yorkshire terrier and his vet papers state the same now i dont know what he is now...other than a loveable friendly loyal baby and i have seen yorkshire terriers all the time when i was living in the uk and i didn't even know there was such a dog as a silky we just call all of them Yorkshire Terriers now i have to be careful not to offend ppl in case its a silky...lol |

Silky or Yorkie Sorry, I'm still confused because I was searching silky terriers and in some pictures it shows them with hair that reaches the ground. I also receive comments regarding my yorkie, such as is she a Silky and I say no she a Yorkie. When we bought her and seeing her parents, mom was 5 lbs and dad 3 lbs but she is 12+lbs. So confusing? Cici is an awesome little dog, along with her sister princess (shepard mix), bella (black lab and pit mix). :aimeeyork We have trained her to get in the pool and get her tennis balls. She jumps into the water just love that. She is also really stubborn on some trick too... so funny. |

Yeah, prehaps she does. On another note how come when you read the book that Petsmart has on Yorkies it says they will weigh up to 20 lbs. But anywhere else online it says the yorkie should not weigh more then 7lbs? To me Cici turned out great since I do have the other two dogs and they play with her. Thanks for the reply, appreciate.:aimeeyork |

Yorkie vs. Silky? 2 Attachment(s) I got Sammy when he was 2 1/2 months old from a breeder. He had papers detailing his heritage and to show he was a true Yorkie. I adopted Bella at 10 months old. I got her from a woman who couldn't care for her and wanted better for her. She said that she did not get any papers but that Bella was a purebred Yorkie. However after having a Yorkie for 15 years I knew them inside and out and Bella, well she didn't quite fit the Yorkie mold. She looked quite different from Sammy, particularly in the snout. So, when I took her to the vet, I asked her if it was possible that Bella was a Silky rather than a Yorkie. She confirmed what I had suspected and that was that Bella had the body, the eyes, and the coat of a Silky. Mind you, I don't care in the least. I love my dog and she's a bright spot in my life.....I more feel badly for the elderly woman from whom I adopted Bella and that there's possibly a breeder out there charging for Yorkies, when they're delivering Silkies. Anyway, I have attached two photos with similar positioning so you can see the difference between the two dogs. Sammy was much older in his photo and you can see his coat is black. It was thick and very soft. Bella is a blue black with tan. Her coat is coarser and thinner, though very silky at the same time. You can particularly notice the difference in their ears and their snouts. I do truly believe that Bella is at least part Silky if not all. As I said before, I love my dogs (I lost my Sammy last August due to Canine Cognitive Dysfunction) and I am a better person having loved them. I just wanted to share. Thoughts are welcome as are questions. Thanks, Chris, Bella and in spirit Sammy T Attachment 319157 Attachment 319158 |
