Default Need adoption/rescue advice

I know there is a section about rescues and such on here, but I thought I might get better advice here since that is more about posting when someone has found/needs a home for a rescue.

We got Wrigley (4 months old) a little over a month ago, and while he is very happy here, I can't help but think he would love a little playmate. We would love to get a youngish (somewhere under a year old or so, but would consider older) female for a companion for him *not to breed at all, just think a female would be a good balanced (the men in this household are starting to out number me!)

So my question is this, first off, where do we look? We mostly just would like to take one in that needs someone to love her. We aren't really in any hurry, and just want to provide a girl a home that she wouldn't otherwise have.

Also are yorkies good another one coming into the home? Wrigley isn't jealous thus far, but is my wanting him to have a companion something that is more for me, or is it something he actually would want to? (based on your own personal experiences with your dogs) Is adding a Yorkie a good idea, or is it only a good idea if they were brought into the home at the same time?

You can add another one at any time unless you feel your dog does not get along with other dogs. I would start socializing him with other animals and see how it goes. I brought Gabby into the pack after my 2 babies were already two years old and although they wanted no part of her at the begining they now get along just fine.

There are plenty of Yorkie rescues. I would start searching the net and finding a rescue that are fostered in your area or near. Sometimes you have to travel to pick up your dog. You can go to Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. and type in the info with your zip and anything close to you will show up.

Most rescues require that you are approved before adopting therefore I recommend you start now since most require you to fill out a application and do a home visit. This will make it easier for you so that when you find the one you want to adopt you're already approved. Please know that there are alot of people who want to adopt younger ones so don't get discouraged. Just get the approval part of it out the way. They require a adoption fee which most think its high but every dog is spayed/neutured, have dentals, vaccinated...Good Luck!

Thanks, yeah we are assuming that since we want a female and one under a year that one won't just happen upon our doorstep and that it may take a long time for us to happen upon on, which is fine with us.

Glad to know your dogs are all playing nicely! Wrigley has played well so far with other dogs, he has only been away from his brothers and sister for about a month and we have been to a doggy park where he played nicely with another dog.

This isn't something we are pushing to do like this week or anything, just if we hear of something, through here or through petfinder or something.

Chip, as much as I love him, and tried to socialize him, he just is very territorial and did not like the idea of us bringing Smokey home. Chip was only about 10 months old. We had some really bad dog fights to the point where I actually thought about returning Smokey, which I would NEVER do otherwise. I'm glad I stuck it out though, because now I've got two great babies that love each other! We will have had Smokey a year now in October and things are going great. They have their spats, but what siblings don't?!

Smokey was also a rescue and I was fortunate in "finding him". I actually wasn't searching for another dog until my friend's mom called me and told me that she had a friend that had a larger yorkie male that was 6 months old. We picked him up the next day! So don't be suprised, sometimes yorkies do kinda pop on your doorstep!!

Just wondering, would you take a male if you found one that fit your needs and family? That might broaden your search a little wider if you're more open to gender. I know exactly how you feel though about the males over running the house. I've got my two male dogs, my husband, my male cousin, and my cousin's male cat... then there is me.

I guess I would probably take a male if one happened upon us and it was a right fit. I do feel outnumbered though! I have my husband, Wrigley and our male Leopard Gecko, there needs to be more girly things going on here

HI have 3 rescues, just added Bogey on Thursday. Rescue is a wonderful thing for you to be thinking about when wanting to add a new member to your family.

Pebbles was the first one I brought home at about 6 months old and we have had her since October 07. She has "issues" I have the (D)illusion that if we addded a 2nd they would become fast friends. So we began looking and I brought home Doodlebug in June. He was just a baby and is a totale love bug. Pebbles HATED him, she barked and barked in his poor face for about 2 weeks. They are settled in now BUT they are not huddlie with each other, its more like she is the sister with the bratty little brother who just will not stop.

Later week Desmond (now Bogey) was in the rescue section here and I brought him home. Pebbles of course HATES him and will have nothing to do with him Doodlebug and Bogey are BEST FREIENDS they romp and play and my husband says that they are long lost brothers.

I would like to address the issue of adoption fees with rescues. Yes, they are high and for the most in demand dogs the fees are even higher but only for the reason that for all of the dogs that you see for adoption there are many in foster care that are not adoptable and never will be. So the higher fees help to offset the care of all of the sick and un~adoptable dogs that will spent the rest of their lives in a foster home.

So I look at it like this, not only am I opening my heart and home for a rescue but I am also helping to support all of the other less fortunate dogs that the rescue also supports. It is a very worthwhile cause and my 3 have brought great joy to my entire family!

Thank you for considering a rescue yorkie for your Wrigley's sibling. Saving a yorkie life is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.

As young as your boy is, he will adjust to a sibling now, easier than if you had another over a year or so old. Timmy had a great idea about starting now to socialize Wrigley.

You would be surprised, I think at the number of yorkies showing up in shelters these days. I work with another rescue locally that is an all breed rescue and the director tells me a year ago, they NEVER got yorkies. Within the past 5 months, she has now had 8 yorkies surrendered to her. Yorkies are bred so much now, it was inevitable the shelter numbers would rise Just a month ago we acquired a 16 week old female, so you see even young ones are starting to show up!

I disagree about the the average rescue's fees being too high. There are cost involved as megansmomma mentioned. And, I've said before - I consider rescue a matter of the heart and not the wallet.

Here's a link to a Florida rescue:
