how we got our yorkies i have raised boxers forover 20 years, hubby always wanted a small house dog. i always said no i don't like small yappy dogs. about 2 1/2 years ago on my birthday he brought home this tiny little female yorkie, put her in my hands , she came right up to my face and smothered me with kisses, thats all it took was instant love, now sugar is my constant companion and we have 3 others, cota, jazzy, and baby mercedies. i don't think i could give anyone of them up, and sugar will always be my special little girl |
Finally, it's mine turn to say..... ....why I got a Yorkie. I've never had a dog in my lifetime. I read up on dogs in general, gone to numerous of pet shops to shelters to get comfortable with dogs and see what I am getting into. I even called folks in the newspaper that were selling dogs to ask questions. If I saw a dog at an event, I would ask questions. Many of folks I spoke with that had Yorkies told me that they were a good dog in so many ways. Also since I lost my Dad unexpectedly, it is great company for me as well. |
I've always had Cockers, Afghan hounds, Rottweilers, and several wolfdogs, so the switch to a yorkie was very different for me. My friends and family can't believe I bought such a tiny dog... The reason I started wanting a yorkie is because I used to rehab orphaned baby squirrels. We have raised 11 baby squirrels, and released them back into the wild when they got about nine months old. Our last squirrel baby had been injured too badly to be released, so we had to keep her. Living with a two pound squirrel made me start wanting a small dog, and a yorkie came closest to what I wanted. I have always loved long haired dogs too, so a Yorkie was perfect for me. I got scared off for a year after spending a few months reading YT last summer, and hearing about so many dogs with serious health problems. But I couldn't get a yorkie out of my mind, so after a year I finally took the plunge and bought one. Now I understand why everyone on this forum is so crazy about their dogs. The breed is really special and I'm so glad I finally got my little Yorkie. :D |
My daughter as a only child she needed a play mate this was 18 yrs ago,My non had gotton a yorkie and he and michelle played well together so we got one for her after that I was hooked, I love the breed my hubby at the time hated our new pet thinking in the mind set that a dog should be large and outside well it did not take nakita (niki) long to win my hubbys heart as well as me and my daughter, I remarried later in life got a fm to go with him they had puppies keeped one then I ws hooked again on breeding them so all could feel the love joy and happiness we had felt. I truly love this breed!!! |
Audrey Hepburn I once saw a picture of a little dog sitting next to Audrey Hepburn in a picture. Wow what a pretty dog I said to myself one day I want one. I grew up and found that I just did not like Yorkies I loved all dogs big and small. |
Memories of BOSTON When I was visiting the "North End" of BOSTON, 4 yrs. ago, I was Sight Seeing - Walking in a Park and a Lady and her 5 yr. old Son had a male Yorkie that was only 4 lbs. it was the sweetest Dog I ever met. I grew up w/Dogs, I've had every Purebred and Mutt, rescued countless Strays and even Bred Pitbulls! What impressed me the most about them. They are only 5 lbs. but they act like they can and will beat you down in a Heart beat, they give you the impression that they will killl & die for you! How can you beat that Loyalty? That was a Thursday Afternoon and coincidently my Birthday was coming up (Bargaining Chip!) by Sunday Evening, my first Yorkie arrived! I got an Emerald & Diamond Cocktail Ring as a Surprise Gift from my BF @ the time.......I offered to trade it for the Yorkie? Hearing my un-selfish act I was allowed to keep both. He ended up buying me another one (Female) to keep the first one (Male) company and they had a Litter and I kept the runt Pom Pom is their Daughter. He's and EX-BF and I have 3 Yorkies out of it, Priceless! So every Year I have a Birthday, I celebrate as loud as I can b/c I got a Gift that keeps on Giving & Giving. |
I think for me it was the empty nest syndrome. My daughter got married last year. I quit my job that I had worked at 8 years in Feb. I have always loved Yorkies so my hubbies birthday was in April and I decided that was my way of getting my baby. lol. It worked. He fell in love with Lucky right away. We have'nt had a dog in 20 years. Since I had lots of time to potty train him it has all worked out great. He is a great addition to my family. |
i wanted all that personality in 1 tiny package I've loved reading what everyone else has written! So many stories! I picked yorkie because I knew I wanted a small dog. I researched lots of small breeds, but found that even a 10lb dog was bigger than I wanted. I fly a lot & wanted to take her with me on my trips - so I really needed a companion that wouldn't be heavy running through the airport & comfy under a seat :) Also, I loved that she wouldn't shed & would have a full personality. Yorkies are just so cute too, aren't they? I was worried about the "bad things" about the breed. Being over-protective, too independent-minded, barking at everything. My Ali is NOTHING like that. She looooves people - so warm & trusting to people of all sizes, age or color! She couldn't care less if someone is talking to me or sitting next to me. And she only barks about once every other day ... mostly only when playing! She is just so perfect. The breeder told me her personality was "calm" for a yorkie ... & now that I've visited the breeder again since taking Ali home she says that Ali has really just morphed into my personality. Easy-going, not too fussy & just along for the ride. I couldn't be happier with my yorkie choice!!!!!!! |

I have two s**tzus also. My mom had the brother to one of ours and it died last year from lymphoma. She had always wanted a yorkie, so my husband and I got one for her here locally. It was three days till she could get down here, and HONESTLY I told her, if she didnt come soon I wouldnt be able to give him up. I cried for an hour after he left. He won me when he slept curled around my neck. I was sold on them for good!! ;) I got my Winston 6 months later from the same place:)!! |
Reason i got a yorkie What I really wanted was a small dog that was really easy to take care of. My husband had a problem with his foot, so went to our local foot Dr. He raises Yorkies. Well, we decided to get one from him, and my husband's foot problem went away. I guess we were destined to get one. |
I can't say that I remember actually making a decision to get a Yorkie. I've always favored Shih Tsu's. I had an adorable Shih Tsu I named, Mopsy, and she was a perfect dog. She was white with a little black around her face. She had a lot of health problems. First, she jumped off a bed at the dogsitters and dislocated her knee. That resulted in surgery. Then she got Valley Fever. We pulled her through that with lots of meds. Finally, she got liver cancer, and I watched her slowly dying, the tumor growing, and living on pain meds. We had just lost her best friend, Sam the Beagle, and she was depressed which added to her pain. I have always preferred white dogs. But for some reason, I decided to adopt Roxy, a darling reddish Yorkie, to keep Mopsy company. She was 5 years old, and a bit big for a Yorkie. She was attached to my husband and vice versa. She was Ms. Personality. A little dog with a lot of verve and fun. When Mopsy died, we got Scooter from the same breeder. Scooter was only a year old and totally different from Rox. They looked totally different, too. Scooter was tiny. She was quiet and subdued. The two dogs got along so well, and were pals. And then, Roxy was stung by a bee and died. We were all devastated -- Mom, Dad and Scooter. Scooter went into a shell, and mourned. So, again from the same breeder, we got Jilly. Jill looks like Roxy. But Scooter didn't take to her at all. They are totally different in disposition. Scooter is quiet; Jill is a barker. Scooter stays to herself; Jill sticks to me like glue. Scooter doesn't like to be "loved;" Jilly likes to be cuddled and petted; and Scooter is passive; Jilly is aggressive. Scooter hides out in the shower area of the master bath. I'm not sure Scooter is happy. I know Jilly is, because she shows me she's happy. I adore both dogs. I know what they're thinking, I know them so well. My only disappointment is that Scooter doesn't like Jilly. I'm not sure she ever came out of mourning from Roxy's death. Actually, we all still miss Roxy. |

I've always been a "big" dog person. Never thought I would ever want a little tiny thing. Then My mom, my two sisters and my neice all got a yorkie within 3 months of each other. I went to Missouri to visit.... BIG MISTAKE!!! I was hooked!!! So after having my Daizy for the last 7 months..I just had to have another baby!!! I decided ONE is not enough!!!! |

I send them out when they get up in the morning and then again after breakfast. They are sent out after lunch and then before and after dinner. They are sent out before bed and then they get a treat (bedsnack). Jilly will pee in the house in a couple of favorite spots if we leave her. I make sure she goes out before we leave to lessen the chances. Both dogs have a favorite spot outside. Scooter has never soiled in the house. Never. My dogs have a good vocabulary. They know...they know!!! They know pee-pee outside, they know treat...duck...cookie. Their favorite snack is a duck wrapped sweet potato. I think they'd kill for it! |
