Revenge Pooping????? I had to run to the grocery store this morning so I put Paco in his crate. I was gone about 20 minutes and he pooped in his crate and then lays on it to hide it. That means he has to have another bath and he just had one last night for the same thing. He just pooped this morning so I don't get it. If I am home all day, he poops twice, once in the morning and once in the evening. Is this revenge pooping? Two days ago, I bought a litterbox and some puppy pads to put in his crate while I am at work. How do I teach him it's ok to go in the litterbox after I have already trained him to go outside? I have to work and it's too far away to come home at lunch. I don't have a trustworthy neighbor to let him out and I can't afford doggy daycare or a pet sitter. I am so frustrated I can hardly stand myself. Paco is my first Yorkie but I have never had this much trouble trying to housetrain a dog. I love him to death and I think he's a great dog. Maybe I am just PMSing today but still...HELP!!!!! |
First of all dogs do not make themselves poop out of revenge. that would be like acusing a baby of pooping out of revenge right after you had just changed it's diaper. The dog had to poop, he did not know that you were going to go to the store, or he might have made himself poop before you left. Second he did not lie on it to hide it, dogs don't think like that. They live in the moment and what they did or you did two seconds ago no longer matters to them. He simply is not getting the message of what you want. Not your faault, not his fault, it's a language barrier. if what you have tried in the past isn't working, get creative and think of a new way to get him to understand you. Working closely with your dog and teaching him other things might help him to understand you better. You also might want to try blotting up his pee with a pee pad so it has that smell on it. Good luck. Yorkies can be difficult to train it just takes patience and creativity on your part. Putting him in a little larger crate, and dividing the crate into separate areas might help. Potty in one area and sleep and play ing the other. |

:bravo: That was a great post and awesome advice! |
:goodpost: You also might consider keeping him in an ex pen with his crate inside the pen, and the pee pad outside of the crate. I think it might be confusing him that you're asking him to "go" where he sleeps, which is counter to a dog's instinct. This is similar to that Jeanie said about potty in one area and sleep/play in another. |

Thank you for the suggestions. I have taught him lots of things so I know I am not just ignorant. He knows 11 distinct tricks/commands as well as the names of every toy he has. I even taught him to growl on command. He also knows each family members name. That's why I can't figure this out. The pad and newspaper have his urine on it. The crate is huge and divided into two sections with the litterbox at the back and towels for sleeping in the front. I reviewed my original post and it's official. I'm PMSing. I need a nap. |

Good post I agree with you 100% Dogs do NOT have the brain to even think revenge. they can go poo cause they have too or they get scared. some times when we leave them it makes them nerves an dthey can poo but No not revenge. and they dont think like us oh I must hide this. sorry but they dont. |

And She Does Not Do It Cause She Is Scared Or She Has To Go Potty Either .... She Is Potty Trained For A While And We Never Had To Much Of An Issue With That ..... |
I just dont think that dogs have the brain ability to think revenge, she may not be scared but im sure theres a reason for it. thinking mommy might be mad at her at that time some thing. dogs are smart but I dont believe they are that smart. Im mean think about it how can a dog make them selfs poop if they dont have to poop. I know I cant. |

I had a Cocker Spaniel that use to do this too. When she didn't get her way she would do the very same thing!! It use to drive me crazy! Dogs are very smart!!! I don't know that it is a revenge type of behavior but it could be one that they do to show dominance. I just know that my Cocker was famous for it.. so much so that it really turned me against wanting to own the breed again! |

Dogs do not exhibit human emotions. Humans put their emotions to what dogs do. However it is instinctive for a dog to urinate or defecate on their subordinates. your dog might obey you out of fear and not out of respect. But it does not do things for revenge. That would take calculasted planning and they are not capable of that type of thinking. |
Ya know, I would swear that Trixie does this same thing to get revenge on me sometimes. If I'm outside talking to someone with a dog and she can see it, yep, pooped in the house when I walked back in. If I lock her out of the bathroom while I shower, yep, pooped when I walk back out. I don't think that whether or not dogs have the same emotions as humans is anything that can ever be more than theory. (I mean think about it, how could it ever be proven?) I have known dogs to grieve themselves to death over things and dogs who 'pout' at their owners. So, IMO, they do definately have a range of emotions that they exhibit comparable to those of humans. Spite may as well be one of them. :p |
My Suzi has pooped just after cleaning up the poo mess, she then does it /However, I do not believe it is out of revenge, or spite. I figured she likes a clean place to poo.. Yes they are smart, however, I believe it is not from revenge or spite. they poo when their bodies are ready to.. Not anything elese. |

I usually don't post on such topics as this because people disagree so much but I had a poodle who would pee in the floor the second we left even if she had went before we where leaving. I don't even know how she could pee so soon again. We even tested her to see how long it took. She would also grieve severly if we left her with anyone. She would refuse to eat and cry as loud as a child. I also had a pug who would tear up the garbage. If he was no where to be seen when we came home we knew he had done something wrong. My Dad said he doesn't understand what he has done. Then after coming home with me one day to see the mess and Snoopy (the pug) hiding he changed his mind. lol He would be all excited to see my Dad but when he would look at me he would look all sad. It is kinda funny but the messes were not I think we are not giving them as much credit as they deserve. All dogs are different and I believe they may very well do stuff for spite. Just my opinion. |
I would also like to add that Sophie used too poo in her crate when would leave her. I do not believe she was doing this for spite though. She just gets nervous when we leave her and I think that is what was causing her to get that sudden urge. We now take her out before we leave and make sure she poos. That has solved our problem. |
These dogs are not human, they may poo/pee and tear up garbage or rugs or any thing else. but I dont think its revenge lol its more about change of being left behind, stress, nervousness, seperation ,bordem My Mickey use to eat the wall every time we left as a pup, he just didnt like to be left alone it wasnt revenge to get back at me. |
IMO --- While it may not be "revenge"; it is a form of emotion whether you choose to agree or not, is your choice. As humans, we do things all the time and call them what they are not. If someone wants to call it revenge... so be it. :D |

AND FOR THE RECORD MY DOG DOES NOT FEAR ME ... OK ... NOW YOUR STARTING TO GET ME UPSET OVER THIS ..... HOW DARE YOU SAY SHE IS AFFRAID OF ME ..... YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ME ... AND EVERY DOG IS DIFFRENT BY THE WAY ..... AND HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT A DOG IS THINKING OR FEELING .... HUH ???? YOU MAY HAVE A LOT MORE POST THEN ME AND YOU MAY HAVE OWNED YORKIES LONGER THEN I DO .... BUT THE NEXT TIME SHE HAS ONE OF HER TANTRUMS AGAIN I WILL TAPE IT FOR YOU SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT I MEAN .... CLEARLY I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE ON HERE THAT HAS A DOG THAT DOES THAT ...... OR I AM JUST A REALLY BAD DOGOWNER AND MY DOG POOPS EVERYTIME SHE SEES ME OUT OF FEAR ..... AND THAT WILL BE ENOUGH FROM ME ON THAT SUBJECT .... |
We do have emotions and many are like ours we can not more place what we think on them then we can place emotions on another human being. To consider they do not have emotions is to make it easy for us to treat them as less then they should be. That said it not revenge it fear. You probably ran out the door faster then usually or you were all concerned and poof you were gone. He got concerned and pooping is a stress relief for some dogs so he pooped. Pooping in a house and anxiety after a dog is trained go hand in hand. JL |
My dogs do seem to show emotions also. |
I would suggest reading Patricia McConnell ..For the love of dogs or the other end of the Leash... Jean Donaldson Culture clash is good as well. I would also suggest Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin who is an autistic PHD packing Lady that explains the way the brain works and how an animals is similar to humans and different and the emotions. My little Elvis would always poop in his crate when we left and come to find out, he has separation anxiety. He gets so stressed being left alone and wants to find us so badly that his little bowels "move". I hope someone on here gave you some good advice (I did not read all the remarks)...I was advised to check into the "Dog Whisperer" DVD and plan to do that...just an idea for you. Good luck! |
