Chewie has OFFICIALLY blown my mind!!! We have 2 standard baby gates blocking the entrance into the living room from the hallway stacked one on top of the other (see pics in my photobucket link below). Total height is about 5 feet tall. There is literally about 1 1/2 inches of space from the bottom of the bottom gate to the carpet (see photos). PLEASE someone tell me...how the H*** did Chewie escape??? I got home and he met me at the door! No one lives here but me! Surely he couldn't have squeezed himself down to 1 1/2 inches tall and scooted under that friggin gate??!!! They were both still fully intact as I left them this morning. You gotta see these pics.. Also, for your viewing pleasure...pics of where my carpet was even more destroyed today  I'm at my whits end....what do I do? Crate him for 15 hours? knc1980cec/Mayhem and Destruction - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting |
Chewie is so cute! :D Look at the precious little face:biggrin: I will bet my life he is climbing that contraption like a circus act! :p The post that I just looked at before this one was the exact same thing minus the chewing of the carpet. Last week someone else posted about this too. I'm so sorry cute, precious Chewie (repeat often) is making you lose your mind. My suggestion would be to get some plexiglass and attach it with Zip ties to the gate. Unless he has wings we will not be able to get over the gate then. You poor thing, I feel for you~~Take a deep breath and grab a :beermug: |
Beer sounds GOOD!!!! Too bad I have to go 2 towns over to get some :thumbdown.... Plexiglass is a great idea the only problem is...I eventually get home and have to disassemble this whole catastrophe of gates... Any recommendations on how I should attach the plexiglass in a way that's removable? By the way....my luck....I BET he has wings!!!!! |
I think he's definitely climbing the gates. I would worry he might get injured jumping down 5 ft. though. My yorkie kept climbing out of her play yard so I turned it upside down, lol. Cute baby! |
I watched my Cora at the age of 3 mths and about 1lb, get her nails and tiny little paws just like a kitty and climb the couch. Oh yeah, he's climbing!! |

Your little one is very precious.. and mom.. he only wants to be with you because he loves you so much. :) |
I just bought the 2nd gate last night so since the verdict seems like it's leaning more towards him scaling the gate, he's only jumped over once. He seems absolutely fine. For the time being, I'll see if I can find a bed sheet and wrap it around the gates so the surface is smoother and he can't get his nails in the lattice part to climb. I'm curious to see what other suggestions you guys have :D I'm trying to calm down...it just seems like one thing after another...the main part that I'm upset about is the carpet. I have totally lost my deposit on this apartment. Pee can be cleaned...carpet ripped to shreds...I'm just plain screwed. |

Twist ties.. but make the tie on your side.. not his.. so he won't chew on the ends. Drill little holes in the plexiglass so you can stick them through. |

There is also a gate you can buy that has the plexiglass already built in but when you read the reviews it does not seem very sturdy. |
How about a gate with vertical slats instead of mesh? The plexiglass may be cheaper.. but it is another idea. |
I was looking at the way they are designed and I think I would have the plexiglass cut to fit inside of the frame (2 seperate pieces) so that way you will still be able to take the gate down. Bobbi~we must have been posting at the exact same time;) |
Lower the gate to as low as it will go to the floor, You would be surprised how flat they can get to crawl under. Can you act like you leave and watch him thru a window to see what he does? |
2 towns over for beer??? Good gosh, where are you??? Even in my lil town, we have beer now!!! Yikes! Chewie is a mess!! A cute one tho:D |

I know for sure he can jump directly over one gate. That's why I bought the 2nd once yesterday. He doesn't even have a running start...he just leaped over the thing without even touching it! I'll try to find something to cover up the space at the bottom first....if that doesnt do it, I'll know he's climbing. Who knows....I've seen mice and hamsters squish themselves to fit between a space barely wider than 1/2 inch so maybe his big a** head is really fitting under there. I WISH I had a video camera! The only thing close is my video capture on my digital camera but it wont run all day long. |

I'm so sorry I really don't know what has come over me tonight. I just feel so slap happy. :p |
You know... I think it was SimonandHallie that did the pancake under their gate.... Im going to look for that... |
You have got to set up a video camera and find out how he is doing it. I would love to see that!!!! :D |

CLose... it started with S... Shanatink's Chloe did the pancake crawl! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...than-me-2.html |
Sophie would crawl under the gate to get out. So, I stuff bath towels and pushed a chair up against the gate to keep her in. However, she was 12 yo., very sick and still managed to climb over a gate. If there is a will, there is a way. As for chewing, he sounds bored. Good luck and hope you find an answer to your gate situation. Warmly, Deborah PS I notice that he has access to carpeted flooring, can you keep him in the bathroom? |
i hate that he's getting bored but mama has to work to feed him better than she feeds herself! he has a zillion different things to chew on and if he wanted to run, he has plenty of space to do that since the hallway and kitchen are connected (that's where he's staying during the day when i'm at work). He has always been a fierce digger. I'm about to move to another apartment and I'm so afraid...if the place has all hardwood/ laminate flooring will he damage that even more than if there was carpet? the bathroom is extremely tiny...literally....toilet, sink, tub...maybe 5ft by 5ft of floor... i'd hire a clown or do doggy daycare to entertain him if i could afford it, but not now...i'm going thru a highly unplanned separation from my husband and income is cut in half :( there's a credit card with a slogan "Life comes atcha fast"...cant remember which one, but it sure is true... LMAO at "pancake crawl"....hahahahaaa! |
What if you buy and xpen and get one of those covers for it so he cannot climb out and then put a piece of vinyl under it and twisty tie the vinyl around the bottom so he cannot get to the floor...I use an xpen but mine are not escape artists...Wish I could help more....And shouldn't your pet deposit cover what he destroys, not your other deposit...:( |
They can squeeze through very small spots you would be amazed as Im sure you are. |

2 Attachment(s) I have an Xpen with a lid for Cooper and I took a piece of plywood and cut it to fit exactly inside the floor of the xpen. then I went to the local carpet and vinyl store and they sold me a piece of remnant vinyl for 5 bucks that was cut to fit the plywood perfect. I glued the vinyl to the plywood with carpenters caulking. I then used an old plastic table cloth on my rug first. they the plywood, then placed the xpen over top of that. I put his toys, bed *small Crate with door propped open and pee pads and water dish in there. He has his own little condo. THE floor is slightly raised and inside the pen so he cannot "dig" himself out because the plywood is too strong and I clip the lid down with carribiner rings so they are easy for me to get in but not for him to figure out how to open. Here are a couple of pictures: Good luck. |

My guess is under, too. You need to buy a Web cam and we can all take turns monitoring it! |
