Unhappy HELP! Need opinions - puppy "party"????

My husband, who travels almost every week, thinks it would be a great idea if we had a "puppy party" when it's time to give Bella's puppies away. I am horrified at the thought. Even though we are not selling them and giving one to my sister, two to a very good friend of mine, and the last one to a wonderful family we know here in town, I can't imagine what it will be like when I have to tell my little ones good-bye. His idea is that we have a barbeque and have everyone come over for lunch/dinner then when they leave, they can all take their pups! I told him that was absolutely the worst idea I have ever heard. What about Bella - one minute she has four puppies that she never lets out of her sight and the next, they're gone! His position is that when the pups are 10 to 12 weeks old and we give them away, Bella won't even be interested in them. I strongly disagree! It will be hard enough to let them go one by one - but all of them in one day???? Please tell me if I'm being a freak about this - - of course, I have to admit my concern is not only for Bella - my heart breaks at the thought of losing any of these little ones that I delivered and have been with 24/7 since they were born.

Thank you.

Oh boy, that's a tough one! I know how hard is to give away your precious babies. I've only had to do it once. I kept two out of a litter of four, and it was still so hard to see the other two go. Mine both went to their new homes on the same day. I'm sure whatever you decide, it will be hard, but it will get easier! Good luck to you!! Look on the bright side, they are all going to people you know, so you'll be able to follow their progress, and watch them grow up!

You are absolutely right about being able to keep up on their progress. My sis lives about 45 minutes from here and my friend lives about 30 - so that's not too bad.....I still can't imagine losing them at once.

I thank you for your words of comfort.

The last rescue I did was for a pit bull pup (wow - hard to place!).

He was with me for almost 6 months before I found a suitable home. Never have I had a rescue take so long to place. Im very lucky in matching pup to person in a short period of time.

Well - this one was different. And in the back of my mind - I had accepted 'no one wants a pit - they have a bad rep' and he will probably remain with us. Then one day at the beach a guy came up to the boat to adore him. Long story short - he adopted him as he was a perfect match and checked out A-OK! He wasnt married and wish he were but couldnt hold that against him. I just wanted Bo to have a Mama and a Daddy like here. He was a Mama's Boy.

But I digress. That experience taught me: Im not cut out to be a breeder - EVER. I simply couldnt take care of those precious babies then see them go. (Not that I would want to breed - ah nah)

I commend you and sympathize with you completely! I cried over Ol Bo for days then one day I went to see him. It KICKED ASS! It was so great to see him with his new Daddy - playing and showing off for me. He was so happy. The fella that got him was so happy (but I scared him when he saw my truck because he knew I was having a hard time).

First thing I said was No! Not coming to take him back - just to love on him! The fella - Bo and I hoped in his boat and we went out to Bo's new favorite spot and I watched him romp and play in the surf - like he use to. Shew - k - getting all emotional again.

My point is - I now know my boundaries with rescues. I am going to continue to take them in - always will. HOWEVER - if they dont place in a month or so they will go to my grown son for a bit - then back to me. We are going to share the time so I dont have to go through this again.

Because - as you can see - I still cry about it - 6 months later. I COMPLETELY think the party is a GREAT idea! I screwed up and told the guy 'just drop by then I wont know and be sad'. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!! As I didnt have time to detach thus I miss him terribly. Despite the fact he is so happy and the match was so perfect. I didnt take the time I needed so Im still paying today. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. Have the Party!

We went to visit the breeder of our pup Suzi and Katie
yesterday. She has 5 adult yorkies, one at 9 months and
3 puppies yet to home. (Plus an adult GermanShepherd.)
They had a wonderful time. Suzi's mum wasn't at all phazed by her visit. She more or less ignored her.

My point is, when they get to a certain age and weaned Bella won't want to be bothered anyway.

I think it's a great idea, and worth a try.

Cry "Puppy Party"

Thank you for your words of wisdom, Sky Fox! I'm certainly not a breeder and could never be one - obviously. We just wanted Bella to have a litter of puppies and knew we wouldn't be keeping any of them. Like you, we take rescues since we live out in the country and so many people just dump their animals out here. Our four big farm dogs and 10 kitties (good thing we have a great big barn - of course, they all go in and out of the house too!) have been rescued, but they are now part of our family.

I'm still having such a hard time reconciling with the notion of losing them all in one day, but I will keep reading your posts and hope that somebody out there will agree with me instead of my husband!!!!

I'm very appreciative of you taking the time to help me.

Thanks for the hugs, Shirl - - I could use some right about now! I know you're right about Bella most probably being indifferent about the pups by then, but it still doesn't make it easier to think about it. I suppose having a "puppy party" and losing them all at once means one good long cry instead of four long cries

I saw a couple on Animal Planet (?) that had 'going home' parties for every litter!!
they alway's celebrated the pups finding wonderful home's- and starting life in their new homes!
Everyone had so much fun- and made it a very special day for the new parnets and the breeders

I know it is hard to let the babies go, but you know you have great homes for them-
and there is no better reason to have a party!

It is up to both of you- but I think it is a great idea!
And it might just be the thing to bring smiles to them being gone- instead of tears!!

Unlove gus is leaving at 9 months old

possible new owners coming today to meet gus.. but if it is the right forever home, i think of it as a reunion...matching pets.. i go with my gut feelings..
so far, it has all been good.. try to enjoy the love you are giving to the puppies by giving them the perfect new owners.
i say .. bad idea.. to give them all out on the same day..

space it over 2 weeks.. some at 10 weeks.. then 11 and 12
then have a reunion barbq... better idea, cuz you get to see them at 13 or 14 weeks...as long as you are keeping one or 2 puppies, it will be fine...
best wishes

I think the pups leaving is going to be hard on you and if your not comfortable with it dont do it. Maybe you can have them over for Dinner at your house individually as they take their pups Good luck

We have going away parties for our children - parents - other family members because it helps everyone with CLOSURE!

And isnt that really what you seek? Closure in letting them start their new life without you? Just as when children leave home and people have parties - same principle. All about closure!

Why don't you start a weekly play date for the puppies and have everyone take turns at their house. Jeri Cunningham has an annual BBQ for the Yorkies and their caretakers each year. This year she even extended her hospitality to include anyone one on YT who would like to come, and we are going up there next week-end.

I want to go on a meet up soooo bad! We go other places to play with other dogs but there seems to always be that one big doggie that is just too rough. So - I find myself standing there holding her most of the time which isnt good.

To be in a land of Yorkies and to get to know some of yall in real would ROCK! Come on Florida People!
