This is amazing to me that there are so many larger Yorkies here. I think they are all so cute and am so glad that people love their larger Yorkies. Sadly that is not always the case. I get emails that notify me of all the small dogs that go into the shelters of the NYC area. There are so many larger Yorkies and Yorkie mixes abandoned or given to the shelters. It is very sad.
For many people who think they are getting a small dog, 5 to 7lbs, it can be disappointing when they end up with a medium sized dog instead. It is very sad that they would re-home the dog because of it's size but it happens. Yorkies have such great personalities and that personality is perfect for an active family with kids.
I would advise anyone who really has their heart set on a Yorkie that fits into the breed standard for size to buy from a breeder who has a great deal of knowledge of Yorkie genetics and pedigrees. The breeders should be dealing with an established line of dogs and aware of what the line has been producing in the last several generations as far as size and genetic stability as well as the general conformation of the dogs. There are many breeders out there that think that putting two smaller sized dogs together will produce small puppies and that is not true. One or both of those pet quality dogs could very well carry genes that will produce larger dogs. That is why you need a knowledgeable breeder that knows the lines and has proven breeding stock.
I love your larger Yorkies. I can just imagine how much fun they are to be around. I love my little girl. She is a live wire but I do have to protect her quite a bit. I did want a small dog due to a back injury. She is perfect for me but I surely would love her just as much if she had gotten larger. | Yes, I sometimes get the 'is that Yorkie a full-blooded Yorkie?'. Usually, its from dumb, ignorant people who don't have ANY dog at all to call their own. Miles will be 10 mos. on 6/30 and last time I checked he was at 7.6 lbs. I am sure that has changed by now. His body is very long which is also deceiving.
Miles runs, jumps, and plays with the other doggies in a pack at the meetups; the smaller Yorkies are either yapping /snapping at other dogs / people or they are sitting on laps doing nothing (too fragile, I guess). He was a little shy at first (i refused to pick him up when he asked and made him go play) still is but he likes being around other dogs now. I had on Too Cute on TV where they were showing newborn puppies, Miles was whining and looking for the puppies behind the television. He couldn't understand why he couldn't play with them or why they wouldn't come out of the TV.
And he is a little food thug lol. The doggies were fighting over treats too funny. Miles showed his teeth and growled. WOW!!! |
