What do you put them in when in the car? Hi all, Newbie here, and my hubby and I will be getting a puppy when he comes home in March (yay!). I just wanted to ask, when you're in the car do you put your baby in some kind of carrier/pet car seat or just carry them in your lap? I was just thinking that (God forbid) there is an accident or we have to make a hard stop or something that the baby could get hurt? What do you all use/do when in the car? Thanks in advance. There are special crates that can be put into your seat belt. Mine liked one that was like a car seat and sat high in the seat and then had a halter that you put the dog in. He loved it and could see out. The problem was when my husband and i travel together because it takes up the passenger seat. I have three yorks now so they do travel un restrained. I put a plush in my lap and they have their spots. It is not safe and I don't know what the answer is for multiple dogs except crates that are seat belted in in the back seat. That is what show dog folks often do. It is a hard decision . Lucky little dog that you are thinking of it already ! |
I started out putting the puppy in a crate but he soon wanted out and started sitting in my lap. With my new little girl, I will be getting a car seat for her and my little boy. I'm afraid of something happening to them if there was an accident or something. Good for you for checking it out before you get one. Most of my experience was trial and error. |
I use the Snoozer. It is strapped to the console between the front seats. I attach a safety harness to Nolee and the Snoozer. He loves it! It's straight to the Snoozer with we get in the car! |
I have the Lookout Car Seat with an extra strap so both girls ride in there in the front passenger seat. They love it. |
Mine have car seats in the back seat. Loki loves his and goes right to sleep. Sammy didn't like hers at first, but after 2-3 rides she realized she was not getting out and she stopped barking at us. She rides pleasantly in hers but she doesn't sleep unless she's tired, she prefers to watch everything that is going on. We have Snoozers too. There are lots of different styles. You can get them online or check with your local pet boutique to see if they have one. They are anywhere from $75-$200 but trust me they are worth it! |
suki just sits on my center console, its pretty big. sometimes she comes and sits on my lap and makes people loot at her at syop lights. chick magnet |
Daisy rides in her seat that is fastened into our passenger side. It has a restraint so she can't jumop out of it and it puts her high enough so she can see out the windows which she loves. |
Let's see the boys have a car seat. I made it out of PVC piping and plywood so they could both fit in it. One is 11lbs and the other is almost 7lbs. Maggie has a seatbelt harness for the front seat. That is her seat and whenever she is in the car that is where she sits. Friday is in a carrier. I have her in there so she can get used to it for when we start traveling to shows. |
Hi , welcome to YT ! :yorkietal I have a carrier I use for Suzi. She is in the back seat, right in the middle. Placeing your dog in the front seat or in your lap are the worse places for a small Yorkie. Because, if you have air bags , it will kill your dog if they are deployed. Also, on the drivers lap is dangerous because if you were in an accident the small dog would go flying out the windshield, or crushed. :aimeeyork Always have your dog in the backseat . :aimeeyork These little guys are smaller then a child, and we need to protect them in every way we can. Safety needs to be a number one concern. :aimeeyork |
I just bought Bobby the solvit pet booster seat. Here is a link to it at petco. I bought it at BB&B for $30 much cheaper than petco. but i couldnt find it on their website. It works pretty good, Bobby can still stick his head out the window but I can feel confident that he wont jump out because he is strapped in. The strap hooks to his harness. I put it in the backseat so when I have guests in the car I dont have to move it. Solvit Deluxe Pet Booster Seat at PETCO |

Bobby loves car rides, I had to buy the seat because he is too short and would climb on me so he could look out the window. It was getting too dangerous. Its so cute he will bark at my purse when he wants to go for a ride. :animal36 |
Depending on where we are going, Canyon either rides in his plastic carrier or in his car seat. He sleeps the whole time in either one. |
I have a harness that I bought that has an extra large loop on the back that the seat belt goes through. Sassi sits or lays in the back seat-she loves it and it was under $20! |
SOLD! I too have the Solvit Deluxe Pet Booster Seat and think its lovely! However! It only comes in two sizes: :thumbdown Which is the ONLY thing I dont like about it. They dont make one small enough for our babies. The smallest I was able to find was 'up to 30 pds' and 'up to 40 pds'. So my babies car seat is far bigger than it needs to be - thereby taking up more room than needed. But then again - it leaves room for her toys and babies by being the size it is - kind of like a mobile playpen. :animal36 But she is safe! The size doesnt compromise safety like with an infants car seat. Hey! I have an idea! I need another baby to fill up the extra room! hehe (joking) |
Click on my profile http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mem...%2Bshelby.html to see Scooter in his Solvit. Both he and Kay T love it. I just snap their harness to it and they can't get out. I put a Pooch-pad and towel in the bottom, just in case of accidents. I also strap it in with the seatbelt for extra security. It also very easy to move from front to back seat when needed but I usually keep it up front. |

Wow! thanks so much for all of the wonderful replies. Looks like I'm sold on the Solvit pet booster! One less thing I'll have to worry about when we finally get our baby. If anyone has any other tips or suggestion for when we get our puppy please feel free to pm me or leave them here. Thanks again, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't find YT. :animal36 |
I normally use a carrier that I can thread the seatbelt through, but lately he's been so whiney and it's been so hot that I let him lay down on the center console. (Where the AC hits him directly.) I know it's not safe, and once the temperature drops a bit I'm going to insist on the carrier. |

When We First Got Jj We Had A Carrier But He Never Liked Riding In That. I Found A Great Pattern In Simplicity With A Car Seat For Him And Made It And Now He Can Ride In This And See Out The Window. He Likes The Front Seat Best But When My Hubby And I Go Out Together With Him He Has To Ride In The Back. My Hubby Sometimes Takes Him Out Without The Seat But I Don't Think That Is Safe So He Always Is In The Seat When I Have Him. It Looks A Lot Like The Solvit Seat. Sorry I Haven't Got A Picture Of Him In It Yet To Show. |
This is great information. We just moved from Missouri to Florida and we let her roam free the 22 hours in the car, which she was great, but I did wonder how we should have done it safe. Thank the Lord that nothing happened, but now that I went on google and looked up the Snoozer, that's wonderful. I will be ordering one today!! Thanks everyone.:animal36 |
I have two of the Lookout Snoozer car seats, too. I really like them and so do the girls. :) |
I have carseats for mine, but I also have the seatbelt harnesses. I use these for short trips. It hooks into the seatbelt and onto their harnesses. I think I got them from ebay. Either way, keep those babies safe!:) |
I have a consol snoozer seat for izzy. she loves it. rides in it well. it straps onto the consol lid and can connect under the front seats. There's a harness clasp thing in there too. She loves it!!! Here's the site, it's a little pricey but i travel so much that it was a must!! Console Safety Pet Car Seat for Dogs with FREE SHIPPING |
I have a crate that can be put into your seat belt ..... it is perfect and SAFE !!!! |
I have the biggest SUV made, the Excursion. In the back is the largest dog cage made. With nine dogs they need the room. If I'm only taking one or two I have a duel car seat in the back seat. If I only take my Mandy she sits in my lap unless I'm driving then she is in hubby's lap if he is in the car. |
I used a plastic crate at first and Lily got car sick. I made up a laundry basket for her and it has worked great!! She can see out and doesn't get sick in it!! I will probably get a real car seat for her sometime but for now she is doing well in the laundry basket and I buckle it in w/seat belt and hook her in it w/her harness I have a big pillow in there and it works!! |
My whole car is Their's? I know I'm going to hear a Lecture from everyone about this b/c all my Girlfriend's w/Dogs always tell me how un-safe it is for them to ride w/o a Car Seat. All 3 ride in my Car w/o a Crate or Car Seat, each one sits in a specific spot and stays put while I'm driving. I put a faux fur blanket over my back seats and on the floor I have little beds (the kind you put into the crates) on each side. Artie will stay on floor or backseat, Abigail sits on the rear dash board or the front seat where she can Sunbathe or bark if she feels threatened that's her "Post". Pom Pom always sits on my Lap since she is smallest one. I used to have a "Phobia" about Driving. I was very anxious and nervous. When they are with me I am extra careful with the way I drive and more aware of what's going on around me. Of course I had to Train them to do this so they are well behaved. I did buy them a Car Seat but I decided to use it as a "Bed" instead it's a huge Fushia Pink chair that looks like a throne with a giant crown on it that say's "Princess" embroidered on it. Too many people were distracted in Traffic by it and I used to get honked and laughed at(in a good way)! |
