Sometimes it's HARD to do the right thing. 2 Attachment(s) Sometimes it can be very very very hard to do the right thing. :( From everything I've learned about puppy mills and backyard breeders and the extra reading I've done here and other places, I know that if you buy from these people you are continuing to support the problem, NOT the solution. However, when you see a puppy in that situation it is soooooooo hard not to want to "rescue" him. :( And you feel horrible at first. But it is the right thing to do. Just difficult. Hubby recently asked me if we could buy a $75 yorkie/ chi mix and showed me these photos. The photos pretty much say it all don't they? :( Pup is cute, but doesn't look healthy. The stuff in the back ground is scary and has backyard breeder or puppy mill written all over it, and she's planning to send this pup to new owners at 8 weeks. HUGE red flags.....but it was so hard to say no, but I did. :( Also, please don't point me in the direction of other puppies! We are absolutely not in the right place financially to take on another pet anyway. |
This is just dispicable!! (sp) I feel so bad for the pup, but your right, it has puppy mill or back yard breeder written all over it! Maggy May came from horrid conditions and let me tell you, we've spent more on her to keep her alive and try and get her healthy than we have all three of our other furkids put together in the whole time we've had them and they range from ages 5 years to 8 years, Maggy May is only 8 months old. It's so hard to harden your heart and say no to these lil ones, but hopefully if enough people do, the puppy mills and back yard breeders will see there's no money to be made and will pick up a new hobby and stop making these lil ones suffer. My hats off to you for making a hard choice. |
I so agree with everything you said...yes, it's very hard.:( Rescuing one means...another will come along to replace it. PS I tried really hard not to look at that puppy too. :( |
Heartbreaking! |
oh that is so sad.:( |
puppy look healthy to me...but seeing where it came from...i would have said no also..i feel so bad for him/her...look at the breeding facility or whatever it is in the background... |
Very Sad!! |
You've made the right decision, but I know where you're coming from, I want to ''rescue'' every single pup I see, if I listened to my hearth, I would have at least 50 some odd dogs in my house. I've even forced myself not to go and see the pups at the pet shop because it would depress me so much. So YES you made the right decision, but I have a nasty feeling that backyard breeders will never go away, there'll always be someone who will buy.. sad but true:( |
Yep. I appreciate the support and didn't want to upset anyone, but wow...it was a tough call. Mary, I thought so at first too, but look above his eye in the second pic. Looks a little strange there to me. |

I couldn't agree with you more. I think rescuing dogs from a poor breeder is such a huge mistake, you are rewarding that breeder and yes, more puppies will take it place. Why is it that people want to rescue the puppies, but don't seem to mind if the adult dogs live like this? Their attitude is "someone will buy them anyway", but if these poor breeders have to start charging less and less for their dogs, maybe they'll get out of the breeding business. I wish people would rescue dogs from legitimate rescues, and quit saying that they rescued the dog from the poor breeder. If people want to purchase a dog from a poor breeder, that's their right, I just don't think that they should think of it as a "rescue", but more a condemnation for the other dogs left behind. |
That's why I do everything I can to support rescue organizations. |
You did the right thing Judy. Even though I can tell it tore @ your heart. :( Wow, that place looks a mess. I too feel bad for the puppy. :( It' not his fault he was born into such a horrible situation. |
Sometimes the right thing is the hardest thing!! My heart breaks for that puppy and all the others in that situation. |
Oh Judy, my heart aches for you, especially after some of the talks we have had. I could cry a bucket of tears for that poor innocent pup. |
You're so sweet, Cindy. :) I just pray that everything turns out okay for that pup, his parents and all of the others in that situation. In the meantime, I am focusing on the rescue charity work I'm doing. I have some mosaic pieces to finish today so that I can get them mailed off to several rescues for their fundraisers. So, I'm turning my thoughts in a positive direction for the rest of the day. :) |
Sometimes doing the right thing is so much harder than it should be. Sadly, breeders will think it's ok and breed more if someone buys the puppy since they are then making money. If a bad breeder doesn't make any money, they'll stop. Keep that in mind. I've had to make a horrible decision once but if you let someone get away with a crime, what's to stop them from doing it again? You actually save someone else and future litters from heartbreak by making the choice not to purchase from a bad breeder. |
Judy, I'm so sorry you have to go through this emotional turmoil. You did the right thing but I understand how hard it was for you. I know that little face is going to haunt you but hopefully your bravery will at least slow the breeder down. My gosh the surrounding area in the pictures is a disaster. Poor little puppy. |
I congratulate you for making the right, but hard, decision. You set a good example for others. |
That is so sad. He's such a little cutie, too. That would be a hard decision. I had to make a decision like that the beginning of last week. It's so hard to just not bring them all home and love them. |
That is so sad. :( Yes it is very hard. One time at a pet store (abput a year ago) there was a puppy...that I fell in love with. I named him Sebastian and I would have taken him home on the spot. I was so depressed until I got home and read myself up some more on puppy mills to remind myself why I just couldn't buy him. :( |
Judy, you did the right thing but I know it must have been very difficult to walk away from that sweet face. These pet stores and puppy mills will go on forever if we don't get the word out to people BEFORE they buy. Hope the pain from your ankle is letting up a litte. |
Thank you. My ankle is doing much better! :) I've officially graduated from the big boot brace to a little mini support brace.;) The doctor is happy that I've been able to cut way back on the pain meds too. |

So heartbreaking. That precious little one, so very sad. :( |
I agree, to an extent. I may be "putting my foot in it" but... I totally agree that no one should but from pet stores or back yard breeders. That being said, it is quite difficult to adopt from most resuce organizations these days. I understand that there is the high cost of vet care involved but I can't help nut wonder if some of the rescues aren't making money somewhere. I have seen rescued Yorkies being "adopted" (aka sold) for thousands of dollars over the net. There are also the adoption criteria to be met. Most are entirely acceptable, I would hope that we would all care that Yorkies are always safe, protected, well cared for and loved. That being said, I have been turned down by a couple of rescues because a) I have 2 other dogs ( a Pom and a Lab who are very well behaved and always monitored when a new animal is in the vicinity), b) because I have a 9 yo daughter (my Misty Blue grew up with my other 3 daughters and all were loved and safe) who loves and knows how to handle small and large animals. c) I rent and do not have a fenced yard. I have my landlord's permission ( I would not consier it otherwise) and I do not turn my dogs out to run, They are always on leash when outdoors as too many things could happen. Sorry, this is so long. I truly do beleive in resuing our beautiful Yorkies, both young and old alike. I just have to wonder sometimes. Your thoughts? |

Poor little baby. I hate that people can be so cruel to keep them in these conditions just for a profit. It is so hard to leave them but you know you are doing the right thing because if you were to get him, they cycle would just keep continuing. It just breaks my heart. |

Unfortunately legitimate rescues do have very strict rules on placing dogs. They have to go "overboard" in checking out a family because they know how hard it is to rehome a dog, only to find that family won't or can't manage either. The average price of a rescue should be around $300.00 and the dog will have been neutered or spayed. The United Yorkie Rescue is legitimate and Yorkietalk is now selling raffle tickets to support their efforts. Here is their link: United Yorkie Rescue |
